Plan-Section is the result of your design, no matter what the process is. Planning-Sectioning is the playful superimposition and juxtaposition of the alreadyexistent plans and sections, which could make a great difference compared to the precedents.

Project: Shutter Realm Program: Public Building MSc2 Studio / Spring 2016 Site: Valletta, Malta Designer: Han Yang Tutor: Alper S. Alkan, Sien van Dam Date: Mar. to Jun., 2016 Duration: 16 weeks

Since the shutter is also the crucial component in the camera, I studied the tectonics of it. According to the production of photographs, there are 2 phases, human seeing, which determines the contents of the picture and automatic drawing, which is accomplished by the recording plane. These 2 phases could be swithed by the reflex mirror.

1st step: human seeing 2nd step: automatic drawing

0 SHUTTER 0 隔板 1 We pick up a specific artefact/object and undertake an analysis about its tectonics/matter. 2 We explore different possible situations/conditions of this artefact. 3 We make a recomposition based on our previous analysis about the artefact.

2) Situation 1 2) 情景 1 A shutter could provide various perspectives by changing its lenses. Above you can find different impressions of the same building, Richard Rogers's Lloyds Building. From the external to the internal, you would experience the perspectives of the tilt-shift, the fish eye, the wide angle and the long focus, all of which illustrate the diversity of the camera's lenses.

I picked up the shutter, a typical window component in Valletta as the regulator of the light condition.

This is not a building. This is a recomposition which resembles the image illusion in our contemporary infoage. The camera enables image recording so that it brings more efficiency than natural seeing. But there are some corresponding drawbacks. This model contains 3 parts. In the center there is an event happening which has a certain truth although it is not easy to recognise. The 3 layers stand for different positions of people (some are close to the centre while some are far away). The openings in the panels stand for different perspectives, namely, cameras’ lenses. Through these frames your cognition has been colored, therefore not objective.

2 A shutter could depict various movements by the combination of different pictures. Above you can find different impressions of the same person. From the left to the right, you would experience the moving traces, the mirror effect, the contrast between the front face and the side face and the rotating different angles.

The part is about the situations of the chosen object in Valletta, the shutter. It consists of 3 aspects. 1 The shutter's meanings in different scales. 2 The potential sites. 3 The different explorations based on different interpretations on the shutter.

The morphogenesis of the shutter On different levels, the shutter could be attached with different meanings. On the urban level, the shutter could be the intersection of various urban forces, e.g, a crossroad. On the building level, the shutter could be the switching node of rooms, e.g., a hall. On the room level, the shutter could be the partition system. On the component level which is its originality, the shutter could be the opening, the panel, the frame or the blinds, etc, which could also bring the possibility of changing modes of space and time.

There could be 2 layers with the lower one as the extension of the coast zone and the higher one as the extension of the central zone.

Layer 2

The potential sites and respective plans There are several possible sites in Valletta. During the exploring process, each plan has brought me some specific thoughts about the final project so each plan could be regarded as a differentiation of the final project.

The 3-zone division and the final plan Valletta could be interpreted as containing 3 zones, the culrual zone located in the centre, the landscape zone along the coast and the residential area which is inbetween but abandoned. Based on the 3-zone theory, a superblock as a shutter system could be created on the border, connecting the central part and the perimeter part of Valletta, thus becoming the "urban shutter".

The final project is located in Valletta’s transitional zone between the public area and the landscape area, which is the abandoned residential area for which the government is asking for renewing ideas from the public. So in the urban level, the project could be regarded as a shutter between the center and the coast for the higher floor is the natural extension of the public area while the lower floor is an artificial fluctuant slope which encounters the landscape area.

In the building level, plan and section typologies are explored to fulfil the shutter’s potential in accommodating diverse programs. The interdependent blocks exemplify the contrast, the contrary, the contradiction, the complementation and the cooperation of various programs, revealing the hidden social momenta in Valletta. In the component level, the platonic zero-degree forms enable multiple uses within the same shape and combination and differentiation of various shapes. To conclude, this project is the translation of the autonomous shutter system which could function in different levels. It is also the extreme diversification of shutter-related forms and the illustration of the collision and resonance of multiple social programs. In this way, the shutter has evolved into a shutter realm.

The Valley: The Ground of Earthly Delights Project: The Valley: The Ground of Earthly Delights Program: Public Building Graduation Studio Site: Luxembourg City Designer: Han Yang Tutor: Alper S. Alkan, Mauro Parravicini, Filip Geerts Date: 2017-2018 Duration: 1 year and a half

My graduation project is located in the valley of Luxembourg City. During the designing of this project, Constant Nieuwenhuys’s New Babylon played a crucial role for its similarities with the valley in the city.

The Valley in Luxembourg City

According to the method of Planning, there are three levels in a plan, Sector-Subsector-Component. In New Babylon, the city is constituted by chains of irregular rectangular sectors.

New Babylon

1st similarity: They both stretch all over the city, resulting in a sort of skeleton of the city for its holism.

2nd Similarity: The human activities inside are quite alike. Both are ludic or leisure programs, which are distinctive compared with the rest of the city.

This is Contant's Planning of Yellow Sector, inside which there are several geometric "subsectors", within which there are components dispersed.

This is a juxtaposition of various Components. In fact, not only structural components are Components, but different kinds of furniture are also Components. Abstractly, Components are those piecemeal labyrinthine elements, which are the minimal units of Planning.

The above is Contant's initial planning and cross sectioning of New Babylon. Superimposition and juxtaposition is applied repetitively to create a large amount of heterogeneity. Here I extended the method of Planning-Sectioning in Shutter Realm. Plan-Section is the result of your design, no matter what the process is. Planning-Sectioning is the playful superimposition and juxtaposition of the already-existent plans and sections, which could make a great difference compared to the precedents.

Planning/Sectioning Superimposing/Juxtaposing Sector-Subsector-Component Ground-Object Heterogeneity

I remap the whole valley thinking it as a continuation of sectors as if it is another "New Babylon".

Several sectors in Luxembourg City were extracted as heterogeneous precedents. This investigation of sectors results in a typology of sectors. These sectors could also be understood as subsectors of a bigger sector.

In terms of Sectioning, the valley could be seen as the reversed New Babylon. The artificial slabs in New Babylon become the natural ground while the hollow structural columns become the potential towers or wells inserted in the valley.

The future tram line is the working backbone of Luxembourg City while the valley is the leisure backbone. In this way, the intersection of the two backbones are of the most complexity.

From the intersectioning areas, six subsectors are picked up as topographic samples of these areas and could be transformed as the future programs.

The six subsectors were analysed topographically in Bernard Tschumi's way in his Manhattan Trancripts.

The six subsectors were analysed topographically separately to find the interaction between Ground and potential Objects with them.

The nothern area is of more complexity. The greenery, the settlement, the bridge, the potential site and the transportation hub form a pace of moving, staying, which means that the site would be someplace for people to stay.

The six subsectors were unified in one potential continuous sector.

The six subsectors are topographic conditions as well as implications of tectonic conditions. For example, a flat area could be a market, constructed by thin cocrete columns. In this way, I transformed topography into tectonics, then into programs. Also, several classical modern projects were found as crucial references. The market, with columns, reference: Palazzo della Ragione The baths, with concrete walls, reference: Vals Thermal The hotel, with concrete walls, reference: Bank of Georgia Headquarters The library, with concrete walls, reference: Educatorium The sports field, with concrete slabs, reference: Museum of Ocean and Surf

Then, several different dispositions of these subsectors in the site were tried. In Planning 8, the subsectors were transformed into strips in order to fit in the narrow inbetween space in the already-existent buildings.

In order to make the subsectors fit into the site perfectly, the raw site was modified. A pedestrian route was created, connecting the bridge and the hub. The continent in the water was turned into a werland for crops. The eastern river bank was turned into a wetland for free planting.
