There's a reason why copper graces so many buildings
Quite simply, it's one of the most attractive metals in architecture. Architectural copper has evolved from a weather barrier and exterior design element into indoor building environments where it is changing the way commercial and residential interiors are decorated. Copper does not require cleaning or maintenance. It is particularly suited for areas that are difficult or dangerous to access after installation. Architects often look to architectural copper for continuity in design elements. For example, a copper roofing system may be designed with copper flashings, weatherings, vents, gutters and downpipes. With the growing use of vertical cladding, vertical and roofing surfaces can run into each other so that complete continuity of material and performance is maintained.

Specify anti-microbial copper in design creating the safest environment for your clients Did you know that copper has antimicrobial properties? The recognised anti-microbial efficacy of copper has resulted in an increased interest for its use to protect touch surfaces against infectious microbes in internal and exteriors of buildings. In fact, any touch surface can be upgraded with anti-microbial copper alloys, helping to protect public health and improve hygiene. Studies have repeatedly shown that the use of copper as a surface material in key public places and food preparation areas will substantially restrict and reduce the spread of harmful infections. Better still, copper retains its bacteria-killing effectiveness even when mixed with other metals such as nickel and tin. That has helped ease aesthetic concerns, as many of the current antibacterial copper products are alloys of a lighter colour and a finish closer to that of stainless steel.
The innate ability of copper to kill microbes will have profound implications in several industries as it becomes widely adopted.

MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER The urban fabric that is our collective future is busting at the seams. As mega cities from New York to Mumbai swell at speeds beyond current infrastructure and development plans, cities need smart solutions for sustainable expansion. While large scale design solutions are very exciting and ideal for ‘greenfield’ projects or in scenarios where major intervention is possible, much inspiration can be drawn from small actions and scenarios, tactical solutions that don’t impose. Indeed, innovative design has always been more significantly driven by societies immediate needs and challenges. As the winners of the GAAF (Global Art Affairs Foundation) design prize, Houston University has demonstrated how these small ideas can infect bigger thinking and lead to significant impact. This has me believing that the huge amount of amazing, innovative and inspiring ideas on display throughout the year in Cape Town over 2014 will have a lasting influence on the way we address our own challenges both locally and nationally. We have taken inspiration from all this creative activity and re-evaluated the purpose of our online presence. As a valuable resource to the design industry, we have streamlined our platform and can now offer some unique and effective marketing solutions specific to our readership. As always, thank you, to the companies and people who have supported us through the last 8 years. It is due only to your support that we are able to enter our ninth year of service to the greater design industry. We look forward to making it a significant year and assisting you in achieving the same with yours. All the best for 2015, it’s going to be great! Carl Reynolds Publisher

Landscape Architecture TIME SPACE EXISTENCE
Peter Jay Zweig FAIA
18
In relation to the Global Art Affairs Foundation’s official Venice Architecture Biennale exhibition TIME SPACE EXISTENCE, and the Foundation’s general focus on the philosophical concepts of Time, Space and Existence, Peter Jay Zweig wrote the following personal statement: 19
When asked to write a statement, I was humbled by the enormity of these three simple words, TIME, SPACE and EXISTENCE. Upon reflection, I began to think of this as an opportunity to create a marker, a stake on man’s place in the universe, to take a deep breath and offer personal meditations, exposing my inner thoughts on taking the everyday life to another level beyond that which we know. As Albert Einstein introduced the 20th century to the notions of relativity, it has become clear in the 21st century that each person is composed of all that has existed before and will be on a molecular level. Matter and energy continually reciprocate and balance one another in the cycles of regenerating life. This simple theorem proves that perhaps, there is more we have in common with each other than previously conceived. However, our collective thoughts on time, space and existence seems to be evolving through history and has not yet reached a consensus. Historians, curators, architects and artists, all take a position and try to make history understandable from their own time and individual
20
perspective. However, the inevitable debate on the ‘ultimate truth’ continues between science and faith, between reality and each person’s unique perception. As we may recall, the earth being round, the discovery of gravity and the understanding that objects will always fall to the ground, the notion of perspective in art, as opposed to all images and space being flat, the invention of the clock to measure time as linear, the life altering view of mankind developing as part of an evolutionary process, the ability of man to conquer flight, seeing the earth as a whole from space and even the concept infinity are all thoughts that have only occurred to man within the past 500 years. All these ideas have clearly changed our thoughts of time and space and have altered our views forever. I therefore think that man’s perception of time, space and existence is a moving target; the truth seems to be just out of reach, where all we know is always moving to a new horizon, where ideas come down to: what do you believe in at the moment to be true, in your own time.
21
TIME: The NOW: Most notions of faith and psychology remark on the concept of trying to exist in the present, because it is all we really have. Even the memories of past events or those of the future, only exist as thoughts in the present. However,we are now experiencing the beginning of an evolutionary transition with the advent of a virtual reality. The latest technologies of mass communication are changing all forms of media and are collapsing our past conceptions of time and space. Since ideas can now be transmitted instantaneously, it is affecting our most precious notions of existence. By being able to communicate in an instant on a global level, the face to face interaction of the physical is becoming less important. Texting or tweeting preempts a phone call, because the sender doesn’t
22
have to waste time talking and can reach everyone simultaneously. Privacy becomes transparent, thus removing another barrier to our relationship with time, space and existence. The enlightenment of the inner voice, becoming in touch with the “oneness” and being able to go off line and silence the global chatter is becoming increasingly difficult. Broadcast TV becomes old news because the internet has already made the news gone viral; time in this case becomes the NOW and the physical is once again preempted by the virtual. Marshall McLuhan correctly predicted 50 years ago that, ‘The Medium is the Message’. It is the momentary thought that is now transmitted as it happens to everyone, everywhere that appears to be the next evolutionary step of how mankind interacts with each other. The perception of time and space has clearly collapsed, which can prove challenging to the pursuit of getting in touch with the spiritual, inner self, as the virtual world of the media proliferates and becomes more pervasive.
23
SPACE: The evolving PAST: In the 20th century Einstein proclaimed that space was curved. It was years later that this hypothesis was proven in an experiment when a light beam was bounced off the moon from the earth, measured and proved that space did in fact, curve. Einstein further proved that the speed of light projected an image that needed time to travel in space, thus creating the notion that all things are relative to one another in space. Therefore, the image and the predictability of time could no longer be occurring in the same moment. As an example, the stars that you are looking at tonight actually existed in the past. The time it took for the image of the star to reach earth made man capable of seeing history,
24
seeing the past image of something that existed possibly millions of years ago. Einstein also later explained how the past and future can actually be viewed from the present by bending space in such a way that time could exist as a linear element, while space remained curved. This allowed the viewer to look forward or backward from the curving of space and the linear line of time. This view of time and space unlocks the key to portraying the past, present and the future as coexisting in one referential point. It is now possible for an artist or architect to explore new ways of seeing space, from an historical cubist, super flat, modernist, or from a contemporary vantage point of experiencing time and virtual space in a simultaneous moment.
25
EXISTENCE: The new IMMORTAL: The ultimate question each of us faces is how to approach the idea of death in light of our fleeting existence. It’s perhaps the greatest unknown mystery of life. Faith has different notions of approaching the concept of how the spirit of man is released after death. However, with the discoveries of the genetic mapping of the DNA, it is now unquestionable how our genetic codes are transferred to our children: it is the life force of the parents that are passed on in the smallest genetic codes at the time of conception. It is these inherited traits, these markers that unlock the mystery of our immortality. It has been calculated that 25% of the earth’s population is related to Genghis Kahn. It is remarkable that a DNA trace from a thousand years ago can be deciphered and catalogued today. The experimentation with cloning, nanotechnology and genetic manipulation as a form of immortality foreshadows a new, evolutionary potential only predicted
26
in imaginative, science fiction writing. Man’s immortality can now be inexorably linked to our children, as our essence is passed on to them as they carry a piece of us into future generations. Time therefore, truly becomes relative from the individual’s perspective, either existing only in the moment, or linked together as moments on a necklace through time in succeeding generations. Just like the isolated, documented people that were shown a photograph of themselves for the first time and they couldn’t see themselves in the image, because of not understanding perspective visually, or how to interpret an image on paper: Time itself is similarly something we can’t see, but rather conceptualize as an idea and apply it to reality. It is this paradox of manipulating reality that allows the artist and the architect to create a vision of how to see ourselves in our own time, but predictably will also change and evolve as time passes and self awareness of our own existence and place in history is altered.

As our perception of time and space collapses around us in an evolutionary outburst of information, technology and communication systems, it is understandable to feel lost in wonder over a global society changing right before our eyes. From my own point of view, I stand firmly rooted in the NOW looking over a vast universe, in awe that I exist in my own time and space, even for a glorious moment.

The Global Art Affairs Foundation is a Dutch non-profit organization that aims to heighten the awareness about the more philosophical themes in contemporary art, in particular: Time – Space – Existence, and make these subjects more accessible to a wider international audience. In order to achieve this goal, we organize exhibitions, symposia and we publish.
32
Art and architecture exhibitions are organized during the Venice Biennale at Palazzo Bembo, Palazzo Mora, Palazzo Michiel and Palazzo Rossini. In order to draw attention towards and to promote specific individuals or projects, the non-profit organization Global Art Affairs Foundation (GAAF) awards every year an artist(s) or architect(s) for his/her/their outstanding concept and execution thereof. We award the Global Art Affairs Foundation Prize each time to an artist(s) or architect(s) who is dedicated to his/her/their concept over a longer period of time and whereby this concept and the execution thereof is in our opinion of significant meaning for mankind. Winner of the 2014 Edition of the GAA-Foundation prize is the UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, GERALD D. HINES COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, GERALD D. HINES COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE 2014 VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, GERALD D. HINES COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE Winner of the Global Art Affairs Foundation Prize 2014 RISKY HABIT[AT] By Peter Jay Zweig, FAIA 50% of the world’s population live on deltas and coastal areas. 60% of the GDP of countries come from the economies of this fertile area. As the world population increases, the urbanization and industrialization of the delta has created a new and challenging frontier. Can man live in this fragile ecosystem that has become the breeding ground for 40% of the world’s species? Will the expanding ports, chemical storage, refineries, and manufactured environments coexist with the migrating birds, fish and animal life? Can man manage the catastrophic natural disasters that are prone to these regions? These are the questions facing the next generation. As society propels itself into a world of climate change with rising sea levels, tsunami’s and increasing swells of weather that have resulted in devastating hurricanes, floods and water surges,it has now become the design imperative to learn how to reverse the effects of climate change,or how to defensively coexist with these new facts of life. The University of Houston, Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture has undertaken this challenge with Peter Jay Zweig, FAIA as the curator and exhibition designer with an International Consortium of Universities in the Netherlands, Argentina and the United States. In Houston, the question was posed: How do you take an industrialized bayou with the negative problems of toxic water and air pollution, loss of wildlife and wetlands, and a settlement infrastructure that is ageing and convert these problems into positive solutions along 100 miles of the Buffalo Bayou?
34
The architecture students explored how Houston, the fourth largest city with the number one shipping port in the United States, could become a contemporary example of how to solve the intrinsic problems of living in coastal areas and create a high quality of life in an industrialized, urban city living on a delta. The forward looking schemes integrate the management of flooding, water surges, runoff and winds prone to the hot and humid climate of a coastal city with sophisticated building and natural filter systems that exploit carbon sequestering, phytoremediation, harvesting of water and embodied energy concepts for an agrarian landscape. The notion that humanity is truly part of a greater natural order has begun to emerge on a global scale.. If man is to survive as a species in a world that is becoming increasingly accessible and interconnected, then viewing the 100 miles of the Buffalo Bayou from Barker Dam along the energy corridor to downtown, to the ship channel, Galveston Bay and finally to the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico should be conceived as one curated ecology of nature and man living together. A WATERLINE that is not simply natural or artificial, but one that is a thriving, interdependent system that has many layers of geological, infrastructure, settlements and environmental processes that hold the future of man’s development. It has been important for this next generation of students to creatively imagine both short and long term dreams, for sometimes with the right amount of passion, dreams do come true.

RISKY HABIT[AT]: 2014 VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE DYNAMIC LIVING ON THE BUFFALO BAYOU: HOUSTON, TEXAS USA Houston represents the geological intersection of the South and West, where the coastal prairies meet the inland forests, where winding bayous converge on the Gulf of Mexico. Home to a myriad of delicate ecologies, surging floods, swelling storms, and hurricanes, dense humidity at high temperatures, unrelenting drought, blazing wildfires, and torrents of insect infestation,Houston hangs in the balance of a truly dynamic environment. From east to west, the bayou transforms from a fluvial stream into a rigidly angular, industrialized waterway. Since the city’s founding, the Buffalo Bayou has been the birth canal for Houston economically, culturally, socially, and politically. Coupled with the risky habits of suburban sprawl, petrochemical refineries, and reliance on the automobile, the increasingly volatile environment now threatens a metropolitan city of six million. Like the city’s sprawling edges, Houston’s identity and sense of place has decentralized over time, as it has consistently redefined, re-branded, and reimagined itself: a rail hub, oil boom-town, international port, space centre, and energy capital. Comprehensively, these design proposals present Houston in three scales along the banks of the bayou: 100 miles: WATERLINE, 02 mile: BRIDGES, and 20 foot: FACADES. By identifying Houston’s risky habits on the bayou, an investigation at incremental scales transform the negative threats of a risky habitat to positive opportunities.
36
RISKY HABIT : 100 MILES :LIVING ON THE BAYOU From Downtown to the Gulf of Mexico, the Buffalo Bayou has proved to be a vital piece of Houston’s growth for the past 100 years. Through history, Houston’s economic prosperity has transformed a narrow and winding bayou into an international port. How is it possible that Houston’s port, stretching more than fifty miles, generating more than one million jobs, connecting so crucially to the regional, national, and global economy is so detached from the local culture? Is this relationship something worthy of salvage, or has it become too disconnected, too volatile and too toxic to save? Home to a myriad of delicate ecologies, surging floods, swelling weather, unrelenting drought, dense humidity and high temperatures, Houston fosters risky habits in a risky habitat. Conceived as one cohesive and curated ecology, Risky Habit(at) approaches Houston’s primary waterway in three, sequential scales: 100 miles, 2 miles, and 20 feet. Designed in an equilibrium of human settlement, nature and infrastructure, these projects balance the fragile environment with the economic ethos of a city in search of its future. From the two city dams impending collapse, to the rapid loss of coastal wetlands, to the toxic nature of the ship channel, to the idling, abandoned oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, Houston’s risky habits of suburban sprawl, reliance on the automobile, and economic prerogative now threaten a metropolitan city of more than six million people. The projects along the bayou do not merely speak about aesthetics or beautification, but use biology, geology, technology and engineering to solve environmental problems that have a real-world impact on the future of the urban waterfront. By recognizing the bayou’s economic importance, realizing its cultural significance, and respecting its volatile potential, these projects reactivate the water’s edge, integrating dynamic and flexible design solutions within a rising waterline.
37
RISKY HABITAT : 02 MILES : BRIDGING THE BAYOU Stretching 627 sprawling, square miles in a no-zoning city, Houston is 25% vacant. Like the city’s sprawling edges, Houston’s identity and sense of place has decentralized overtime, as it has consistently redefined, re-branded, and reimagined itself: a rail hub, oil boom-town, international port, space centre and energy capital. Wedged between the city’s towering central business district and the ship channel, the East End has been shaped by the rise and fall of an industrial era: dilapidated warehouses, parcels of brownfield demolition and an aging infrastructure. The habits of man and habitats of nature meet in a physical “no man’s land” along the bayou’s edge. Blurring the line between urban density and the sprawling suburbs, the East End reveals a potential for a new paradigm of sub-urbanism. As the urban and suburban conditions meet in the shadow of downtown, new opportunities for density, economy, and amenities emerge.
38
Photograph courtesy the GAAF
By bridging the bayou, a new understanding of sub-urbanism creates innovative and connective links through infrastructure, nature, and people in the East End. Breaking the impermeable prose of the paved, suburban neighbourhood, Buffalo Bayou becomes a vital source for transition from the contemporary industrial district back to its indigenous, natural origins. Using a series of pedestrian, automobile and hybrid bridges, these projects revitalize the East End into a pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use and conceptually sustainable model for suburbanism. Activating the bayou with housing density, recreation, a municipal core, eco -tourism, agricultural parks, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, these projects balance community amenities and necessities along the natural ecosystem of the bayou. In a stretch of two miles, nine new bridges stitch a continuous, dynamic park along the water’s edge into the industrial texture of the East End, connecting the people once again with the forgotten beauty of Houston’s bayou while exploring new opportunities for a city in search of “place”.
39
40
INHABIT: 20 FEET : LIVING WITH FACADES Composed of layers, the anatomical shell of a building in Houston’s regional climate mediates some of the most challenging design conditions: high temperatures, dense humidity, varied breezes, seasonal flooding, sporadic drought, as well as insect infestation, endangered wildlife and riparian vegetation. As the climate becomes increasingly volatile, the ability of facades to adapt and evolve in extreme conditions becomes paramount to living on the Buffalo Bayou. On a human scale, the facade of a building can be conceived as an extension of one’s body: organs, bones, muscle, skin, clothes, walls and finally, the facade of a building. It is this combination of intermediate layers that must perform in a dynamic flexibility, both with and against the extremes of the: sun, wind and rain. In the hot and humid climate of Houston, unpredictably warrants a need for a perpetual resilience to the elements, in order to maintain and expand the psychometric comfort zone. These projects investigate the idea of inhabiting a volatile ecosystem, proposing an intermediary, transitional space between the interior of buildings and the banks of the Bayou exploiting opportunities of passive breezes, panoramic views and performative systems, while guarding against impending, natural climatic and wildlife threats. Through pneumatics, prefabrication, parametrics, acoustics and modular systems, a new understanding of facades as an extension of “place” is creatively explored.

...still waiting?
You don’t need to be! If you are installing a kitchen be certain your contractor is a KSA member. This will ensure peace of mind and an independent forum for any legitimate complaint.
MEMBER Gauteng 0861 542 572 Western Cape 082 787 8806 KwaZulu-Natal: 031 761 2034 email info@ksa.co.za | web www.ksa.co.za
Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA) Thousands of people have kitchen installations completed successfully. How do they do it? The answer is proper planning – know what you want, what you can afford and use a member of the Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA).
What is the KSA? An important role of the KSA is protecting the rights of the consumer. Members provide the highest quality products by ensuring that the best materials are used within your price range. Consumers have peace of mind and certainty that outstanding service before, during and after installation is given. Whatever the requirement or budget, the KSA has a member capable of fulfilling the brief. The KSA can only offer you, the consumer, assistance and protection if you choose to work with a KSA member. As a non-profit organisation the KSA’s mission and vision is to create a professional and stable trading environment in which the industry can prosper and consumers can enjoy complete peace of mind. The KSA aims to be a national organization, representing the countries reputable kitchen manufacturers and associated product suppliers with the purpose of offering the public peace of mind. The KSA also works to facilitate solution driven resolutions between members and consumers in areas of dispute.
51
Why use a KSA member? The KSA has a strict code of ethics to which all members subscribe. Membership is not easily awarded and member’s references are screened. Members must have been trading for a minimum of three years, have a stable credit history and be in good standing within the industry. All members must also agree to abide by any ruling handed down by the KSA or risk suspension or expulsion from the association. It is an industry standard for kitchen companies to request a 50% deposit on signing of the contract, a further 40% on delivery of carcasses to site and the final 10% on completion of the work. The KSA holding account offers a safe place for disputed funds, deposits and final payments. It can be utilized at any time on the mutual agreement of both parties at no cost to the consumer. Application forms to utilize the account as well as information on how the account works can be downloaded off the KSA website. In the unfortunate event of a dispute arising between yourself and a KSA member the incident can be reported to the KSA by downloading the dispute registration forms off the website. The KSA undertakes to assist with any legitimate complaint that falls within the kitchens installation and guarantee period. The KSA mediation service aims to provide a fair and equitable resolution to your problem. As an industry body the KSA provide advice and guidance and are always happy to assist you with questions or concerns you may have as you embark on purchasing a new kitchen.
52
Everything you need to know before starting a renovation The majority of problems we see at the KSA (Kitchen Specialists Association) can often be traced back to client’s not being fully informed about what the process of installing a new kitchen involves. All too often client’s have misconceptions about the cost, time line, preparations and payment. Before you even start talking to kitchen companies you need to have a good understanding of what you want and how much you are prepared to pay. Start by doing your homework as to what aesthetics you like and what would work with the rest of your home. There are a multitude of finishes out there and you need to have an idea of whether you are looking for modern clean lines, country or traditional styling. Assemble a few pictures from magazines to give the kitchen company some insight into your tastes and style. The next step is to set a budget. Most people underestimate just how much a new kitchen costs. Bear in mind that it is recommended that 1/3 of the value of your home is invested in the kitchen and bathrooms. It is important to ensure your budget is realistic. The larger the kitchen the more it will cost. If you want to work with timber, granite, solid surfacing or engineered stone the cost will be higher than if you are looking at working with wrap, melamine and Formica. The next step is to look at the basics that already exist in your kitchen and whether or not they need changing. Installing a new kitchen is a good time to look at upgrading your appliances, plumbing, electrics and lighting. If your appliances need an upgrade, have an idea of what you want before approaching a kitchen company and have the necessary specifications of size and installation for them.
53
When looking to appoint a kitchen company we suggest you talk to three reputable companies. Look to protect yourself by ensuring the company you appoint is listed with an industry association like the KSA. This will mean that the necessary background checks have been done on the company and that should anything go wrong you have recourse through the industry association. Ensure you give the kitchen company an idea of your budget and the aesthetics you are looking for. Most people are reluctant to give a budget in fear of the kitchen company fitting their quote to the budget. Without an idea of what you are prepared to spend the kitchen company can’t see if your budget will cover the style of kitchen you want. What they can do once they have your budget is to achieve the look you want with materials that will fit your budget. It can be a good idea to ask the company to do two quotes, one using the whole budget with all the bells and whistles and another more conservative coming in under budget. This way you can pick and choose those special extras you like from the expensive quote, add then to the conservative quote and end up with a happy medium. Allow each kitchen company to do their own measurements and design. Don’t take one design from company to company. Each company will have their own interpretation of your needs, your space and your budget. With three different options you will be able to choose the company that has best understood
54
you and your space. Most kitchen companies will charge you a fee for their drawings. This is usually refundable if you sign with them. It is standard in the kitchen industry to have a payment structure of 50% deposit, due on signing of the contract, 40% on delivery of the carcasses to site and the final 10% on completion. It is your responsibility to ensure the old kitchen is removed before the kitchen company comes to site. Before your new installation begins you should ensure all structural, plumbing and electrical changes have been made. If gas or water lines need to be laid under the floor to reach an island unit this should also have been done. A kitchen installation does not happen overnight and if you are having granite, timber, engineered stone or solid surface tops you should allow four weeks from the carcasses being delivered to site for the time line. It is important to note that should you, as the client, delay installation or make changes once the kitchen company are on site this will add to the four week time line as well as to the cost. In conclusion, protect yourself and your investment by working with an association registered company and have realistic expectations of cost and timeline.

KSA’s Top 7 Hints to Ensure You Stay Sane During Your Kitchen Installation A lot of the complaints we receive from consumers are due to rising stress levels and breakdowns in communication between the parties. Don’t be fooled. Having a new kitchen installed is a stressful, long, untidy and inconvenient process and not everyone can afford to move into a hotel for the duration. Here are our top seven tips to help you keep your sanity during the process: •
Pack up your kitchen meticulously. Use clearly labelled boxes and bubble wrap. This will ensure that when you come to unpack you know where everything should go and damages are minimal. Remember not to pack away the basic essentials you will need while the kitchen is being installed.
•
Set up a temporary kitchen in a convenient space where you will not be falling over yourselves. You are still going to need to cook and clean while you have no kitchen. Ensure it is somewhere where you can still operate your kettle, toaster, microwave and some sort of hot plate. You should also allow for the washing of dirty dishes. Camping wash stands can come in very useful.
•
Ensure you site is ready for the kitchen company – all electrics and plumbing should be done, flooring complete and the old kitchen removed.
56
•
Be prepared for at least four weeks without a kitchen.
•
Avoid making changes once the installation has begun. This will end up increasing the length of time the kitchen company is on site. Remember every change you make goes to the back of the kitchen companies’ manufacturing queue and can add up to another week to your timeline.
•
We know it is tempting to watch the kitchen company once they are on the job but don’t. Kitchens are custom made and will need to be adapted on site to deal with unlevel floors and walls and unexpected issues that may arise on site. To you it may seem like they are ‘cutting up and changing’ your kitchen on site but the installers are trained to make these necessary adaptations once the goods are out of the factory.
•
Judge your kitchen on the finished product. The kitchen company will ask you to snag the kitchen before they hand over to you. This is when you should be looking for anything you are not happy with not before. Remember that when dealing with a KSA member you get a one year guarantee from date of installation should anything go wrong after you have signed off the kitchen.

From small Kya-Sands outlet to nationwide company:
the rise and rise of Fourways Airconditioning South Africa What’s the secret of commercial success? Find a need and fill it! That – in short – is the story of Fourways Airconditioning. In 1999 it was a small outlet in Kya-Sands selling Samsung airconditioners to COD customers. By 2014, just one and a half decades later, Fourways Airconditioning had become a fully national brand, with warehousing and technical support in every major metropolitan area. The key to Fourways’ success? Fast, on-the-spot service to aircon installers, plus long-term parts and service back-up. As a result, sales growth has been meteoric.
2014: a fully national brand with new brand identity Today, with outlets selling and supporting Samsung airconditioners and Eco-Heating systems as well as Alliance airconditioners and Heat Pumps, Fourways Airconditioning South Africa has become a One-StopShop for installers across the country. Not only do Fourways supply products but also technical advice and assistance to architects, developers and consulting engineers in terms of design. As a result of Fourways becoming a fully-national brand, a new modern corporate identity has been developed, with logo and colours reflecting the nature of Fourways Airconditioning’s ever-growing business.
OUR MISSION To provide our dealers (and customers) with the best quality units, backed up by the best service and marketed by top-class people in a responsible and strategic manner. OUR VISION To become the Number 1 Supplier of Airconditioning and Heat Pump units, spares and service in South Africa. Our top-quality Samsung range Fourways supplies and supports a wide range of high-tech Samsung airconditioners, from small domestic split units including Inverters to large Samsung DVM units. With more and more companies moving to energy-efficient HVAC systems, Samsung’s DVM S unit is proving very popular, particularly as Fourways is able to assist with training and design assistance, including AutoCAD. Fourways have already supplied DVM systems for many different commercial/industrial applications as well as upmarket homes. In addition, Fourways also supplies Samsung’s top-of-the-range Eco Heating Systems and 70 Samsung LED bulbs for a total eco-friendly solution.
Fourways’ own Alliance range In 2006, Fourways Airconditioning launched its own range of Alliance airconditioners and Heat Pumps to meet a specific gap in the market. Offering a broad range of competitively-priced airconditioners including Underceilings, Rooftop Package units and ducteds as well as splits and Inverter models, the high-quality Alliance brand has found ready acceptance with installers. Alliance Heat Pumps have also taken off in a big way, especially since the Energy Usage in Building Regulations (XA2) came into force. Alliance Commercial Heat pumps providing up to 10 000 litres of hot water per hour are now being used in large commercial and industrial applications. All Alliance products use eco-friendly gas.
Training facilities Fully-equipped training facilities allow Fourways to bring aircon installers and plumbers, as well as consulting engineers, architects etc. up-to-date on the various products sold by the company.
‘Service is what we sell’ Comments Richard Perry, MD of Fourways Airconditioning South Africa: “Ultimately, our rapid growth comes down basically to one word: ‘service’. We have excellent products, but it is our on-the-spot supply capabilities combined with design assistance, technical back-up and long-term after-sales parts supply that have combined to make us one of the largest Airconditioning/ Heat Pump suppliers in South Africa. However, we are not resting on our laurels, but are constantly looking for new ways of improving our service to our customers, because ‘Service is what we sell.’”

With top quality as its main goal, ISEO has always been focusing on staff know-how, loyalty and reliability. Iseo was born in 1969 from Giuseppe Facchinetti’s extraordinary entrepreneurial spirit. It began manufacturing locks, cylinders and padlocks in Pisogne, a village on Lake Iseo (Northern Italy), from which the company got its name. Deeply rooted to its origins, Iseo has remained faithful to its own territory and to the manufacturing vocation of the family who founded it and brought it up to its current size. In 1998, the founder’s son Evaristo Facchinetti began a new phase of development and founded the “Iseo Group”. His growth strategy focused on two key elements: size, because that makes a difference in a competitive market; the human factor, because entrepreneurial spirit is the centerpiece of a group. In line with this strategy, Iseo started taking over complementary companies which brought additional quality, specialization and production vocation. Today, Iseo group is a significant presence on the international scene; it is an alternative reality to major financial groups. It comprises a team of synergetic companies that maintain their own management staff, specialization, entrepreneurship and manufacturing sites. This allows us to offer our customers a deep product range and service quality. Iseo South Africa was established in 2010. It is based in Cape Town and it specializes in distribution of security locking systems and MK systems in South African market. It has 25 employees and all the employers have a strong experience in the lock industry.

Lafarge Plasterboard Solutions for More Beautiful and Durable Cities
Lafarge Plasterboard: Marrying eco-efficiency and aesthetics Compliance with SANS 204 energy efficiency standards, SANS 266 SABS Mark – a product certification which guarantees the product is manufactured in a controlled environment under controlled conditions & will always comply with the requirements of the specification - as well as Lafarge Plasterboard’s listing on eco-specifier, is just part of the company’s ongoing commitment to building better cities. Jean-Paul Croze, Managing Director of Lafarge Gypsum South Africa, says: “All buildings must pass stringent technical standards to attain the necessary regulatory approvals. Lafarge Plasterboard meets these critical specifications, while still offering architects and interior designers creative flexibility, in keeping with our drive to build world class cities.” With “green” building alternatives a priority, Lafarge Gypsum’s research and development continues to produce products that have sustainability attributes and meet vital needs, such as fire and moisture resistance. “Whether used in residential housing, hospitals, schools, offices or hotels, Lafarge understands that every product manufactured is ultimately about people,” Croze says. “Their safety and comfort plays a huge part in our dedication to meeting and even exceeding technical standards with regard to fire resistance, moisture resistance, thermal insulation, acoustic control, or combinations of these features.” Lafarge Gypsum’s plasterboard is produced in a number of standard lengths, widths and thicknesses as well as with a variety of characteristics for different uses. The standard plasterboard range is available in 6.4mm, 12mm and 15mm thicknesses, while the fire check boards and moisture check boards are available in 12,5mm and 15mm. Eco-specifier, the leading global source of sustainable development and lifecycle assessed green product information, requires products to exhibit one or more eco- and health-preferable characteristics. Croze says: “Our listing means Lafarge products – including plasterboard, plasters, vinyl tiles and steel products - have undergone an independent and unbiased assessment and are benchmarked against South African and international standards.” The first local plasterboard manufacturer to produce a 15mm plasterboard, Lafarge Gypsum designed it to offer better resistance to damage in high traffic areas. “It requires less maintenance and carries the weight of wall hangings and racks for merchandising, making it ideal for shop fitting,” says Croze. A network of specialised resellers and hardware stores in South Africa and across the continent distribute Lafarge products to ensure broad access to the Lafarge range. From a plastic bottle to a Think Green Insulation Sheet Millions of plastic bottles end up in South Africa’s landfills every year. Finding ways to manufacture useful recycled products from these bottles will not only shrink landfill sites, but will also support the construction industry in finding sustainable building solutions. A.G Ismail is a company that offers an insulation to clients that is manufactured from 100% recycled plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. Their Think Green Insulation is a professional product that can be used in dry-walling insulation and ceilings. This insulation sheet will keep a building cool in the summer and warm in the winter, improving heat regulation and minimising the need for artificial temperature control systems. Creating a Think Green Insulation sheet The most common container in the soft-drink market in South Africa today is the PET bottle. Recognisable as the transparent, rigid container used to package bottled water, carbonated soft drinks (CSDs), sports drinks, water, juice, peanut butter, salad dressings, oil, cosmetics and household cleaners, PET is labelled with the #1 code and is 100% recyclable. Discarded post-consumer PET bottles are collected, baled and delivered to the recycler. In the recycling plant, the bottle tops are removed and the bottles
are inspected and sorted according to colour and material. The sorted bottles are washed and then conveyed to a granulator, where they are reduced to flakes before being screened. These flakes are then washed and dried and conveyed to an extruder where the material is turned into pellets. The finished product takes the form of small clear pellets, which are supplied to end-users for production into a number of everyday household items, including the Think Green Insulation sheets that A.G. Ismail supplies and installs. The demand for recycled products A prevailing demand for polyester fibre continues to provide the most economic end-use for South African recycled PET, and demand currently exceeds supply. In South Africa, Gauteng generates the most PET postconsumer products at 55% of the national total, followed by the Western Cape with 13%. Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves 1,5 tons of CO2 versus landfill or incineration processes. More than 1,4 billion PET bottles have been recycled in South Africa to date.

INTEGRATING A RAINWATER HARVESTING SYSTEM
INTO DESIGN
This CPD accredited rainwater-harvesting course provides specialist RWH knowledge including: • a greater understanding of the issues that need to be addressed at the design stage • a break down of the different RWH system components and how they fit together • how technical hurdles can be overcome • how a properly designed RWH system will save clients money, specially in the design stage when it is more cost efficient to install the system rather than retrofitting it. Patrick Rosslee, the course presenter, is a rainwater-harvesting specialist at JoJo Tanks. For more information on the course please contact Patrick on RWH@jojotanks.co.za

We create chemistry that lets cosy homes love windy days.
Wind turbines produced with innovative solutions from BASF can withstand high-speed winds and severe weather conditions. Our products help make the production and installation of wind turbines more efficient, as well as making them durable – from the foundations to the very tips of the blades. In this way, we support the development of wind power as a climate-friendly source of energy. When high winds mean clean energy, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry. www.wecreatechemistry.com

We create chemistry that makes compost love plastic.
Most plastics don’t biodegrade, but ecovioŽ plastics from BASF disappear completely when composted in a controlled environment. Using compostable bags for collection of organic waste makes disposal more hygienic and convenient. Rather than ending up in landfills, the waste is turned into valuable compost. When the plastic bag you use today can mean a cleaner future for the environment, it’s because at BASF, we create chemistry. www.wecreatechemistry.com
