This is reflected in the numerous prestigious international awards received by our students and faculty in the last three years. Our mission is to create critical thinkers, who are intellectually acute, socially aware, and technically skilled architects that can meaningfully contribute to contemporary architectural discourse.

A strong design-based education will equip students with both a hands-on approach and advanced knowledge and understanding of cutting-edge digital tools and technologies. The department caters to diversity. Global issues are addressed and merge with local conditions of culture, climate, the local market/industry and social needs. Ecological and sustainable thinking are highly valued, providing the necessary tools of context, comprehension and application of social, environmental, and cultural aspects.

SUCCESS STORY From Nicosia to New York “The University of Nicosia, and especially the Architecture Research Centre (ARC), have been an important milestone in my career development. The multicultural, educational backgrounds of the ARC faculty, their overall help and guidance, gave me the chance to realise the importance of the local and international architectural scene. They kept me up to date and informed on new trends and practices. Moreover, I had the chance to participate in local and European architectural workshops, in Nicosia and Vienna, and take vital field trips to Greece and Italy. These trips and workshops were invaluable, helping me to expand my network with architecture students and professionals from all over Europe. In addition, I had the chance to engage as a summer intern in the architectural offices of my professors, participating in international competitions, working on conceptual and ongoing projects, while better understanding the architectural reality. Furthermore, I was fortunate to experience academia within ARC as a Teaching Assistant for the 3rd year Architectural Studio, and as a Digital Fabrication Lab Assistant, dealing with technologically advanced architectural model-making machinery (like cnc, laser cutting and 3D printing). After graduating, I was given the opportunity to participate with several ARC faculty as a tutor for the international workshop of AA Visiting School, in collaboration with UNIC and the Cyprus Architects Association.

SUCCESS STORY From Nicosia to New York ”After leaving UNIC, I pursued architecture in some of the most important offices on the island, earning multiple prizes in architectural competitions along the way, while also officially registering as an Architect at the Scientific and Technical Chamber. I’ve since been able to leap forward with my career, relocating to New York, where I’ve worked for the Office of Metropolitan Architecture for almost 2 years. My time in New York has been marked by significant architectural projects of all types and scale, including skyscrapers in Los Angeles and Tokyo, a cultural centre in Los Angeles, and many other interesting and innovative smaller projects. I’m happy to be continuing my journey, gaining new architectural, educational and cultural experiences. Thanks to the University of Nicosia and ARC, I have gained the knowledge, tools and experiences that have helped me to pursue and develop an international career in my field, always consistent with my character and understanding.” Stavros Voskaris Architecture Class of 2013

SUCCESS STORY

"As a foreigner in Cyprus, the Department of Architecture at UNIC has become my second home. Besides the open environment, the accessibility of the lecturers and their willingness to support in project developments, studying here has helped me gain a different perspective of the field; understand its level of complexity through intricate theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches; preparing me to succeed at a professional level." Alice Vuap Architecture, Class of 2017

>> In Fall 2010, the Department of Architecture moved into its new facility, the Architecture

Research Center (ARC), that was designed specifically to fulfil the needs of the program. The new building, a converted shoe factory, allows faculty and students to work together and further develop the architectural program according to its mission statement.

The building includes: ten main studio spaces (two for each Studio), an entrance foyer, and a central amphitheater. All are designed to be easily converted into one expansive open-plan space for special events, such as the End-ofyear exhibition, major public lectures, large workshops, and recreational events.

Additional facilities include the Department’s Digital Fabrication Workshop (F-L AB), the Wood Workshop (W-L AB), the Computer facilities (C-L AB), classrooms, faculty offices, study rooms, and administrative rooms. There is also a cafeteria, a student lounge, and a rooftop terrace.

Labs C-LAB, F-LAB and W-LAB The [ARC] Labs are equipped with cutting edge hardware and software for both students and faculty. The use of the Labs is also part of several courses and workshops within the architectural and interior programs such as the Architecture and Interior Studios, the Digital Design Courses and the Architectural Catalysts. The computer lab (C-LAB) features newly acquired machines with a wide range of digital design software including tools for 2D drafting, 3D and parametric modelling, animation, rendering and image processing. The [ARC] Digital Fabrication Lab (F-LAB) hosts a laser cutting machine, a CNC milling machine and a 3D printer, which individual students or groups of students can use to produce architectural models and prototypes on their request. From October 2014 a Wood workshop Lab (W-LAB) started operating, significantly expanding the creative possibilities for students and faculty. The W-Lab will enable the use of a large series of Hand tools and Power Tools. All laboratories are well supervised and maintained by an experienced support team. Regular inductions are organized to assist the students and faculty with the use of the labs. www.unic.ac.cy/arc

STUDENT’S VOICE The Department of Architecture holds student opinions and feedback in high esteem. Consequently there are a number of ways of collecting this information. University-Wide Student Evaluation Reports At the end of each semester, the University circulates course evaluations to each registered student in every course. These anonymous evaluations are read, collated, and discussed by the relevant Heads, Deans, and other faculty and staff. Departmental Feedback The Architecture Department gathers systematic feedback from students regarding the manner in which the program of studies is delivered. This feedback is gathered through questionnaires, group discussions and individual contact. This information is of great value to the department and is submitted for the annual review of the programs taught.
