OVER ART BY LIISI PÜSS

As I look back on last year, a lot of stuff has been done. Planned or unplanned, it makes no difference - wrong choices can lead you to the right places. ARCHIV HATE really feels like the right place. I would like to thanks ARCHIV HATE supporting people. We have created a new value without which the future of our community is unimaginable. People in our lives are not meant to stay, no matter how long have you been with them, but ARCHIV HATE is here to stay as long as our community can spread a word and support underground music scene. DIY. The world without a thing to be done, without a certain purpose, without future. Evaluate your freedom! Support the bands and artists - visit their shows & talk to them, buy their merch, cd's, vinyl's and everything else. -ARCHIV HATE, December 2012

He was born and grew up in the US, with a family roots from Europe. A man who above all value his life – Tanner Gaius Olson. Talented and gifted, he gives a very special feeling to things that leave no one indifferent, and it’s Across Tundras. It’s more than just a band, it creates a sense of life – it’s the sense of freedom!

The harsh travel through the snowy countryside, minus ten degrees outside, the sun was shining in my face. The magical sound of the Across Tundras kept me smiling for a whole day and it just does not stop for a moment. Across Tundras is a soundtrack of my day!

My name is Tanner Gaius Olson. I was born in Sioux Falls, SD on July 17, 1980. I grew up in rural South Dakota and spent my youth playing in corn fields and walking down railroad tracks. We were poor and our entire family hunted and farmed to provide us with life's necessities. My ancestors migrated to the USA from Norway and Sweden about 4 generations ago. My father's family changed their last name from Oloffson to Olson when they came to America. My last name on my mother's side is Ausland, which is a derogatory German word for "foreigner". I tend to think that means my mother's family in Scandinavia were not originally from there. No one knows any history before that time, but I would assume my Auslander family were probably persecuted to some extent, because of the meaning of that word and our family name. I wear it all very proudly though. I currently reside in the hills Northwest of Nashville, TN where I play guitars, sing, and write songs for Across Tundras among many other things.

The initial ideas and practices for Across Tundras started in 2003. I had just moved from South Dakota to Colorado and wanted to get a new musical project going as soon as possible. I already had the idea in my head to combine heavy progressive rock/classic metal with influences from blues, Americana, folk, and country. I saw a serious lack of anything in the American heavy music scene at the time paying tribute to our own heritage. There was a lot of

unused inspiration waiting to be tapped into! Shortly after arriving in Denver, I ran into some old friends from back home and it was very natural for us to start playing music together. As for the band name; people from the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin give the nickname of "The Tundra" to where we come from. I wanted a name that had it's roots in my home, but also signified all the roamin' and ramblin' I had planned for my life and this band. Across Tundras signifies migration, moving, traveling, roaming, wandering, and discovery for me personally. In the figurative sense, yes! I have always been moving around and searching for a true living. Haha. I am a jack of many trades and make a monetary living doing a variety of things; none of which I am proud to say are a "normal" job. Across Tundras is a part of the equation, but it is impossible to make a living in the USA doing just the band because most of the world does not want to pay for music anymore. The USA music scene is also ultra competitive and over saturated, so there are many people fighting for mere pennies. My primary other job since I moved to Nashville has been running Ramble Hill Farm, the small organic produce farm I live on. I sell unique, healthy, heirloom produce at local restaurants and markets. For some reason I seem to choose occupation's where the work is very hard and the pay is low. Haha. I guess the most important thing to me has always been about following my passion no matter how much money it made.

I have had to pawn off personal possessions like my entire record collection and vintage musical gear to keep going at points in time. But when I look around at my home, family, and friends I feel beyond blessed. I learned to not worry about physical possessions and just value my freedom and loved ones.

Those guys are very outgoing and have been reaching out to bands from all over the world for quite awhile now for the Falling Down compilations. I think it is great how they get a variety of well known and smaller bands by just making the effort to reach out and talk to people. If you want something, go out and get it! They got in touch with us via email and asked if we would like to be a part of it and we agreed because it sounded awesome and we like to be a part of many different projects. I know it has helped us make many new fans in Europe and we are grateful for that.

The USA tour was great. There were a few van breakdowns towards the end that got a bit stressful, but you have to expect that when going on such a large trip. This country is gigantic and to be able to play shows nearly every day for 2 months felt like a very big accomplishment. We played with amazing bands and met even better people who fed us and

gave us places to sleep. The sight seeing that goes along with the drives across the USA cannot be described in words. We visited The Redwoods, The Badlands, The Southwest Desert, The Rocky Mountains, The Appalachians, The Great Plains, The Black Hills, and everything in between. As I get older I have learned to become a better "tourist" when we are out on tour. The stresses of the road really melt away when you are wandering through all of these magical places and seeing amazing landmarks. 2013 will see us working and touring harder than ever. We plan on finally making it over to Europe!

Neurosis used to play my hometown in Sioux Falls quite a bit back in the late 90's. To get to see that band at 15 years old made quite the impression on me. I was lucky that I didn't have to waste my time searching for good music like many small town kids do. For some reason we had a very strong scene and all these inspiring bands came to the middle of nowhere in South Dakota and gave us all great influence. I followed Neurosis' career over the years and started to see many similarities between them and how I was growing and progressing as a musician/artist myself. At this point in time, many people did not yet understand the sounds of Across Tundras and thought it was weird and didn't make sense. Haha.

But, I always saw a home for us on a eclectic label like Neurot. I started sending them our records in the mail a long time ago as a shot in the dark, and they actually responded. They liked the music and wanted to keep in touch, so for the next few years I kept in touch and kept sending more music. We recorded the demos for "Sage" and that is what finally sealed the deal. They really dug it and wanted to release it. Holy shit! Childhood dream come true.

It is very natural because all I have ever known is DIY. We come from the same backgrounds and have traveled the same road as artists. I suppose it could be easy to become overwhelmed by being on their label, but it really is just vindication for the things I always believed in and already knew in my heart. Looking back to my very first bands and doing our own DIY record labels, nothing has changed at all. We have always booked our own tours, printed our own shirts, recorded and released our own records, and tried to make the personal connection of music the most important part. I know Neurot saw that and it was a important factor in them deciding to release the record. Neurot is completely hands off, which is rare these days. They work with bands they trust and let them do their thing. The entire process of "Sage" was 100% taken care of by us. We had no outside pressure and therefore, no stress. So essentially, if you are on Neurot, you are still a DIY band in most aspects. I even pressed the vinyl of "Sage" myself. Many people have a big misconception about what it is like to be on Neurot, because they look at Neurot as the same as a label like Relapse because of the level of influence and popularity. Neurot is a place where bands can keep doing their own thing and actually stay hungry.

The split 12" is just about done and getting ready to be pressed. We believe in always trying to make our circle wider, so getting to have a split with a great band like Lark's Tongue and getting to work with a new label like Cavity Records is exciting. Neurot does not limit how many releases you put out or not allow you to work with other labels. I think that is a very powerful thing because most labels want to restrict and control that. Our new full length is going to be called "Electric Nostalgia" and that is pretty much all written and ready to record. Still sorting out all the details on that one, but it is going to be a bit of a surprise for some. A healthy dose of Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy is seeping into the new tunes. All of these songs are a continuation of the heavy and panoramic sounds found on "Sage." I feel like I have just now found the sound I have always been looking for, so the well is nowhere near dry!

I run a small heirloom organic produce farm called Ramble Hill Farm in the hills Northwest of Nashville. I sell specialty produce to local markets and restaurants with a focus on sustainable agriculture. I do not use any commercial products on my land at all. The earth gives you everything you need if you know how to use it! Healthy eating is very important to me. I will always fight against processed foods and things that rob us of our health and vitality. Absolutely! Our studio and practice space is out here on the farm and I also live here with Casey Perry, the drummer in Across Tundras, so we can literally jam whenever we want. The area where I live is magical and ancient place called the Highland Rim. Native Americans have been living here for over 10,000 years. It is very peaceful and quiet up here in the hills. Lots of nature and wildlife. My backyard is a giant hardwood forest with no roads or neighbors for 15 miles. I have healthy organic food in my gardens right out my back door. When bands come through town and stay here I always make sure to cook them a farm fresh meal. I don't think you can find a better setting for creativity. Modern : Graveyard, OM, Neil Young, Hellbender, The Deep Dark Woods, Magnolia Electric Co, Gillian Welch, Wooden Wand, Swans, Marissa Nadler Classic : Townes Van Zandt, Neil Young, Doc Watson, Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, High Tide, The Groundhogs, Gene Clark, Led Zeppelin, The Band, T Rex, The Velvet Underground I am humbled and thankful that anyone outside of my own head even cares. We ultimately play this music as our own therapy with no expectations. I am blown away that it has spread to your country and all over the world and that other people can get something positive out of it. Music and art are both extremely personal and also all inclusive at the same time. Quite the dichotomy! The fact that I had a hand in creating art that is able to transcend boundaries of countries, religions, lifestyles, and all the things that divide us; is one of the most powerful things in the world and something I take very seriously. I hope we can all continue to use this force to come together as brothers and sisters, and truly break down the facade of the walls that divide us.

Dawid Schindler is an ordinary guy with extraordinary abilities. He’s from Poland, he plays a guitar for a band called Objects and besides of creating catchy guitar riffs he is a master in making photos. First time I came across with Dawid & Objects was in 2012, somewhere around May. I was fascinated by Objects tunes and videos they were creating. After this discovery I spent the next few weeks listening to Objects and headbanging my brains out. After a long break I decided to get in touch with my old friend and this turned in sort of an interview. Check out what Dawid has to say about the things going on lately, photos and music he creates.

Hi Archiv Hate ! It’s a pleasure being in your zine once again! Apart of making noises out of cheap guitars, I make photos – that’s more likely ;) I started making photos somewhere around 2006 and they were supershitty. As for I don’t have any academic knowledge and preparation I’d rather say that I make photos instead of being a photographer. I’ve been working doing freelance photography since 2009. Guitar definitely. I grabbed my first guitar when I was around 12 years old. But what’s funny, photography brought me to start a band with my friends. I was looking at all these cool folded covers band photos of my tapes, 90’s b&w fisheye snaps…Then I saw the inside of RATM’s ‘evil empire’ with the simple photo of them playing and totally decided that I want to play with other weirdos  Both. For personal use I try to stick to film, for work I use digital. I have a couple of old rangefinder film cameras from the 70’,80’,90’, even 50’s. Each one is different. I also have some older SLR’s and new DSLR’s. I enjoy both but the value of film photos is incomparable. I think we could talk about personal style in 20 years time from now 

Approach, yes. When it comes to creative activities I try to keep them spontaneous, straight forward, careless, not over analyzed, fun. It’s the same with shooting.

more nervous, noisy as hell 

Yeah it’s a funny one  It’s a acoustic bluesy ambient thing. We (Łukasz and Me) recorded something around Not yet created. Actually I hope it’s going to 20mintues (9/10 songs) of improvised stay that way. Finding work of people which acoustic stuff with a guitar, snare drum and a are so much better at everything you do floor tom played live in a underground teaches you humility and pushes you forward garage. We didn’t expect anything from it at the same time. but a label called Oficyna Biedota (biedota.com) really liked it and it’s gonna be released in 50 pieces on a cassette. I’ll let you One of my first inspirations know as soon as the shit’s hot and ready!  was definately Sem Rubio, a skate photographer. I enjoy Martin Parr, Urs Marty, Anders Petersen. Matt Stuart is great. Michel I believe Vanden Eeckhoudt and Garry Winogrand are the downfall started long time ago and it’s in awesome. Theo Gosselin and Carine the making hehe. No honestly, humanity will Wallauer are very inspiring people. Couple of die in pain one day because it didn’t accept days ago I came across random photos of it’s nature and thought it’s something Wojtek Zieliński and they blew me away. superior and special. It’s totally not  Erich Fromm said that people are the only animal species on the planet that designed societies I keep my Leica mini in my in which they’re not able to exist properly, pocket for most of the time but I don’t do which is the ultimate truth about humanity. much live photography. Some single snaps. Objects were nearly dead. We had a confusing break after Luk (drums) moved to London. Fortunately Łukasz from Perspecto (perspecto.bandcamp.com) joined us and things are doing awesome. We’re writing new songs and struggle with the old stuff. We would love to get back in the game in 013. I think the new stuff might be faster and

Definitely bro! Drop in if you can survive polish vodka !  Thanks a lot for your interest and attention. I really appreciate that. It was a pleasure to take part! All the best! Be lucky! d.

Q. THERE IS NOT MUCH INFORMATION AVAILABLE SINCE ATLAS IS A NEW BAND TO THE WORLD. PLEASE INTRODUCE TO YOURSELF AND SHARE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAND.

We're a four piece hardcore band from Holland. We like to make slow atmospheric music. In the past we have always had hardcore punk bands. after we quit our previous bands we all felt the need for something new after a while. we didn’t feel we wanted to just continue where we left of.

throughout the years, mostly trashy screamo kind of bands like propagator, angst and gonzo. we have also been very lucky to have friends like Tim Kelly, who has been recording all our bands from the beginning. Recording has helped us grow a lot as well.
