You DO NOT need the definite article with: family names in the singular form, that is you don’t need to put il o la before the possessive adjective, when it refers to a/modifies a “family name” as sister (sorella), brother (fratello), dad (papà), mum (mamma), uncle (zio), aunt (zia), grandmother (nonna)… However, you need to put the plural article before the possessive adjective when the “family name” it modifies is plural (brothers, parents, cousins…). Which is the exception? The form LORO never changes and must be always preceded by the article (il, la, I, le)

Examples: 1. Masculine singular. Sara/Paolo dice: “Ho il mio libro” – Sara says: “I have my book” 2. Masculine plural. Sara/Paolo dice: “Ho i miei libri” – Sara says: “I have my books” 3. Feminine singular. Sara/Paolo dice: “Ho la mia penna” – Sara/Paolo says: “I have my pen” 4. Feminine plural. Sara/Paolo dice: “Ho la mie penne” – Sara/Paolo says: “I have my pens” 5. Singular family name. Sara/Paolo dice: “Questa è mia sorella” - Sara/Paolo says: “This is my sister” 6. Plural family name. Sara/Paolo dice: “Questi sono i miei genitori” - Sara/Paolo says: “These are my parents”
