The primary focus of the pod hotel is to maximize the use of space, but what is then sacrificed by this very distinction? One of the main objectives of my project was to figure out how to make a building where people occupy rooms that are tight and confined, and make that same space feel large and voluminous. People Occupying Dense Spaces now becomes People Occupying Distinguished Spaces. A series of dynamic amenity spaces provide the user with a diversity of activities to partake in, from dining at the outdoor cafe to working out at one of the two fitness centers.

The Gateway Extension is a hybrid landscape combining infrastructure, campus and park. Transitions from the El station down to street level and below are made by manipulating the topography. The folded ground plane also provides opportunity for interior spaces that incorporate everything from a book store to parking.

Creating connections
The Pittsburgh Larimer neighborhood is in the process of a major community redevelopment initiative, as apart of this initiative the Larimer Community’s Green Team is in need of a community gathering place where residents may have a place to engage in organizational meetings, recreational activities and community empowerment. This project seeks to engage community members and to supply a space where they can “Live, Work and Play” together, rebuilding and strengthening the community.

The Pittsburgh Larimer neighborhood is in need of major redevelopment. The neighborhood greens/ community backyard program gives Larimer the opportunity to re-establish and strengthen relationships amongst the current community members. PLAYSCAPE is an urban intervention which proposes to create a unique park, garden and pavilion space for residents within the one block radius to have their spirits lifted after the recent tragic events happening in the neighborhood. Residents will also be physically lifted on a terraced bridge structure where they may overlook their children playing in the new park.

Digital design has reduced the distinction between studio and classroom activities, so it is essential to create an environment where students can explore their ideas amongst themselves and on their own time. Most design education programs emphasize the importance of peer-to-peer learning which primarily occurs at informal learning spaces. This project will focus on creating an environment which will foster collaboration, creativity and exploration. I pose to create a student housing hub for the various architectural colleges within the city of Chicago (IIT, UIC, SAIC, Colombia College). I am imagining not only making a physical connection but also creating a digital environment where students can collaborate, network and share ideas at their leisure. The phrase “living-learning environment, comes to mind when thinking of the creation of such a facility. In architecture, we naturally collaborate with many other professions, what benefits are there if we begin this process of collaboration much earlier in our career? I believe the possibilities are endless.
