Beckman has built a distinguished career, nationally and internationally, on a broad range of building types, including commercial, civic, transportation, and mixed-use developments. Prior to joining Portman in 2007, he worked 23 years for Murphy/ Jahn as Senior Vice President, Principal Architect, leading some of the firm’s most recognized projects, including Charlemagne, Brussels; the Serono Corporate HQ, Geneva; Bishopgate Town, London; and HALO Corporate HQ, Niles, Ill. Beckman has taught for the University of Wisconsin and the Illinois Institute of Technology, in addition to participating in design reviews and juries at several universities. He has been recognized by the AIA and awarded the AIA Excellence in Architecture medal.
PIERLUCA MAFFEY Principal, VP, Design, John Portman & Associates
A versatile international architect with over 20 years’ experience, Maffey excels at leading teams through all project phases. His knowledge of developing and implementing solutions to complex schemes has led to successful projects across the globe including: the Expo Hotel, Shanghai; the Park Hyatt, Hyderabad, India; and the Hyundai Gangnam Headquarters, Seoul. Other recent projects include: Coda Technology Building; Anthem Technology Center; and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Hotel.

Prior to founding Duda|Paine Architects with partner Jeff Paine, Duda worked for Cesar Pelli & Associates in New Haven. In 2017, he studied human perception in the urban environment at the American Academy in Rome. Duda was elevated to the American Institute of Architecture’s College of Fellows for his approach to architectural design in 2012. He speaks frequently on design methodology, artistic collaboration in architecture, and the role of public space within private development for universities, professional organizations, and civic groups. He has taught at Yale’s School of Architecture and served as a visiting critic at M.I.T., Columbia, the Cooper Union, and the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
Elam, with Mack Scogin, husband and partner in their firm, creates work that embodies a personal search for an architecture of expansive specificity. Recent projects include: the new United States Federal Courthouse in Austin, Texas; institutions and educational facilities including: the Gates Center for Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University; the Knowlton School of Architecture for The Ohio State University; the Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library for the University of California at Berkeley; the Herman Miller Cherokee Operations Facility in Canton, Georgia; as well as the Zhongkai Sheshan Villas in Shanghai, China; and projects for Tishman Speyer Properties in New York City; Washington, DC; Atlanta, Georgia; and Hyderabad, India.

Speakers JOHN GOFF
Managing Principal, DaVinci Development Collaborative Goff has developed highly visible commercial real estate projects throughout the U.S. He draws on 30 years’ experience to lead complex, client-centric, urban, mixed-use projects. Previously, he spent 17 years as Senior Vice President at Cousins Properties, serving as development executive for the Cox Communications campus expansion as well as for the College Football Hall of Fame, both in Atlanta. Currently, his team serves as Development Advisers & Managers for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s 70-plus–acre campus expansion.
SCOTT HAUGH Architect, HKS
With 25 years’ experience, Haugh has practiced in all phases of the design process. Since 2004, his primary concentration has been construction contract administration work on high-rise residential and commercial projects. Day to day, he keeps an open dialogue with owners and contractors in support of the construction projects, while managing team efforts. His experience also includes work as a building exterior consultant with Williamson and Associates, Atlanta, identifying and solving water tightness challenges.
NATHAN HEDGES Director, Development, Allen Morris Company
Hedges focuses primarily on the company’s development and operations in the State of Georgia. Responsibilities include development and operations for multi-family, office, and retail mixed-use developments. He has 20 years’ experience managing development, design, and construction. Prior to joining Allen Morris in 2014, Hedges was Development Director at Archstone and Holder Properties. He earned a degree in civil and environmental engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
MATTHEW JACOBS Vice President, Gamma Real Estate
Jacobs leads Gamma’s office and mixeduse investment strategy, focusing on the rehabilitation and repositioning of historic buildings in urban downtowns. He also oversees asset management for Gamma’s bridge and construction loan fund. Recent invest-
ment projects in the Atlanta market include: the Hurt Building and Baltimore Block, as well as loans on Underground Atlanta, Pullman Yard, and 524 West Peachtree Street. With a background in architectural history, he is particularly interested in the juxtapositions between new and old, as well as public/private partnership.
TIM KEANE
Commissioner of City Planning, City of Atlanta Tim Keane was appointed Commissioner of City Planning by Mayor Kasim Reed in July 2015. He is responsible for design, permitting, zoning, preservation, housing, community development, and transportation planning in this role. Prior to this appointment, Keane was Director of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability for the City of Charleston, South Carolina for 11 years. He worked for Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., on all matters related to planning, urban design, preservation, and economic development. Keane was also the first Planning Director for the Town of Davidson, North Carolina. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Planning and a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of North Carolina in Charlotte. Keane was a Knight Fellow at the University of Miami School of Architecture.

Architectural Manager - Southeast, Vitro McKenna, National Architectural Manager, Southeast Region, at Vitro Architectural Glass, offers product support and technical information to designers, specifiers, owners/developers and installers in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and the majority of Florida. He has more than 10 years experience in the glass/fabrication industry and has been employed with Vitro since 2015.
ARUN NIJHAWAN Managing Principal, Lucror Resources
Nijhawan brings over 20 years’ real estate investment and development experience to Lucror. Previously, he served as the Real Estate Sector Head for GMT Capital and led the international business initiatives for Portman Holdings. He also financed and restored Atlanta’s 120-year-old Flatiron Building as it transitioned to traditional office space and co-working space for entrepreneurs and enterprise companies.

Scogin is a principal with his wife, Merrill Elam, in their eponymous firm in Atlanta, Georgia. With Elam, he received the 1995 Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a 1996 Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design, the 2006 Boston Society of Architects Harleston Parker Medal, and a 2008 Honorary Fellowship in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Projects by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects have received over 50 design awards including six national American Institute of Architects Awards of Excellence.
Tan has been with John Portman & Associates (Portman) since 1985. As President, she is responsible for determining, implementing and enforcing any operational policies required for the effective and efficient operations of Portman, leading the yearly business planning and strategic direction of the company, reviewing and approving professional and vendor contracts, establishing and maintaining the profitability criteria for projects and the firm, managing the issues, structure, and use of the firm’s human resources, and overseeing the firm’s marketing strategy. In addition, she oversees the production and coordination of all competition proposals and presentations, and keeps in close contact with the China office.

JAY SMITH
Principal, Duda Paine Architects Smith has served as Design Team Leader and Project Manager for diverse corporate, commercial, and institutional building typologies across all phases. Previously, he worked at Machado-Silvetti Associates, Boston, and Wolf Associates, Malibu. His Duda|Paine portfolio includes BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee HQ, Chattanooga; NCR Global HQ, Atlanta; and Time Warner Cable HQ, Charlotte. He teaches at NC State’s College of Design and routinely serves as a guest critic, seminar leader, and panelist at Virginia Tech University, where he received his MArch.
OLIVER STEPE President, YKK
Stepe oversees YKK AP America as a fully integrated fenestration systems producer in commercial facade systems and residential windows. Since 1992, Stepe has served in a variety of roles, including VP sales and operations and Senior VP leading strategic-growth initiatives. He is a two-time recipient of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry award by USGlass Magazine.

Woods has experience designing commercial projects including hotels, sports venues, retail, healthcare, commercial office, and mixeduse developments in Atlanta. With his team, Beck has won various design awards including: AIA Unbuilt Project of the Year, 10 up architecture competition, and AJC Retail Deal of the Year for Phipps Plaza renovation and Nobu Hotel. He received his BArch from Texas Tech University and his Master’s at Clemson University. He also serves on the Executive Board for the NAIOP Future Leaders program, helps with the AIA Student Mentor program, and is a guest critic for architecture at both Clemson and Georgia Tech.

Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.
SHIRLEY STERN Valspar
Stern is the Architectural Manager, East Coast, for Sherwin Williams Coil & Extrusion Coatings (formerly Valspar). From her 20-plus–year career, she has experience in all facets of coatings and specializes in educating and assisting architects with finishing options for factory-applied baked-on coatings for monumental projects globally, as well as project management.
KYLE SWORD Pilkington
Sword heads Pilkington’s interests in historic restoration. With a 15-plus–year tenure, mostly in glass manufacturing, he is involved in various technological developments in the glass industry, expanding education in glass and looking for new opportunities to provide value for customers creating products with coated- and flat-glass products. He has a ceramic engineering degree from The Ohio State University and an MBA from California State University, Sacramento.
