Welcome to Common Ground

Now well into the second decade of the 21st century, the 13th International Architecture Exhibition, directed by David Chipperfield, confirms this as a recurring biannual event.

An opportunity to take initial stock of the situation.

The seven exhibitions held between 2000 and 2012 have marked a significant shift in strategy compared to the previous six editions from 1980 onwards. The architects have gradually adopted a more metaphorical approach while, at least going by the titles, the aim has been to promote a more socially-focused form of architecture.

Le sette Biennali dal 2000 al 2012 segnano un mutamento importante rispetto alle sei che le hanno precedute dal 1980 in poi. Il racconto dell’architettura diviene via via più metaforico, mentre le intenzioni appaiono, almeno dai titoli di scena, sempre più sociali.

Welcome to “Common Ground” and the 2012 Architecture Biennale! The director of this year’s exhibition David Chipperfield claims we’re here to celebrate “shared ideas over individual authorship” and a “rich culture of difference rather than a selection of edited and promoted positions.” But Mister

Chipperfield has organized the exhibition in a nebulous and somewhat circuitous manner by not directly commissioning architects to install their own work.

Instead, he has asked a “limited group of architects to develop ideas that might lead to further invitations.” It seems that he hopes that

by asking this limited group they in turn, rather than himself, will introduce fresh and diverse voices into the Biennale which are not normally part of the architecture or exhibition circuit.

Crossroads towards optimism Is this the ‘crisis’ Biennale?

This Biennale is somewhat of a reconsideration of the role of architecture, and on its relationship in society. Its aim is to look into the future and encourage the public to increase their dialogue with architects and designers. Over the last few years there has been a long crisis in the quality of questions asked. In the past architects were at times asked to create objects and buildings solely with the aim of shocking a public that hadn’t known how to ask the right questions. If by ‘crisis’ we refer to the economic problems 8 Questa è la Biennale della crisi? Welcome to Common Ground United States and, perhaps in a nod to Chipperfield’s minimalist roots, 9 architects from tiny Switzerland. This means in effect that there is one architect from Africa (Noero Wolff Architects) and none from China or France.

“Common Ground” is in fact primarily a reaction to the last 2010 Biennale which focused on immediate, sensory environmental experience rather than material construction and

1 to the team and showed architecture in its context of influence and affinity, history and language, city and culture.” It’s not an altogether uninteresting curatorial strategy given the diversity of today’s internationalized architectural culture, and several in this group of invitees do seem to have taken Chipperfield at his word seeking historical or craftminded collaborators rather than colleagues.

One example is the relatively unknown Indian architect Anupama Kundoo, who is recreating her own “wall house” with Indian craftsmen, students from Australia and craftspeople from Venice who have been working on the installation for over a month. Another example is Zaha Hadid who suggests a constructive conversation with great modernist engineers of the past such as Frei Otto and the London-based group Fat - who focused on the Villa Rotunda, the most prolifically imitated building in the world - to both reflect on their own practice’s interests in copying and copyright and on the universality of the building itself.

Another invitee, the American historian Kenneth Frampton has brought along his five North American architects - subjects of a book published on the occasion of his 80th birthday - all of whom are exemplary practitioners of design but not necessarily ones who “emphasize shared ideas over individual authorship.”

But it has to be said that when looking at the official list of entries, there are many geographical and national gaps in the selection.

Chipperfield's friends include (out of 58 listed in the official press release) 15 from the United Kingdom (no surprise there), 7 groups from the

All in all, Chipperfield is an unusual choice to curate this premier world exhibition. From Vittorio

It’s not that the theme “Common Ground” is not a good one inasmuch as it seems to suggest a critique of the dreary “star” architecture phenomena or that it hints at bottom-up participatory planning as the driver of design. Gregotti in 1975, to Paolo Portoghesi, Hans Hollein and Aaron Betsky, directors have simultaneously engaged in academic writing and curating in addition to practice. Chipperfield, while being one of the most important architects of his generation, has not been thought of as a strident voice (ala Peter Eisenman or Peter Cook), neither raising his voice for or against any particular tendency in contemporary architectural discourse beyond the played-out Minimalism of the 1980s.

Like the 2010 director Kazuyo Sejima, he is primarily a practitioner, not a professional

every important architecture award (except the Pritzker Prize) including the Riba Gold medal in 2011 and he has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth. It is true that he co-founded the important 9H Gallery (with Wilfredo Wang and Richard Burdett) in London but that was in 1985 and apart from surveys of own his work, he has not been responsible for any theoretical exhibitions or texts.

The past director/curators of the Biennale have always started with a notion or a single concept and with a title such as “Presence of the Past” (Portoghesi) or “The

These concepts are perfectly exemplified by Herzog & De Meuron.

Their installation uses the controversial Helb Philarmonie of Hamburg to highlight the problematic relationship between the media and architecture.

To fill obvious gaps commissions were made such as a video on the Shard by RPBW and its presence in London, or the participatory process driving the transformation of the Berlin cold war-era airport, Tempelhof.

But do the majority of the invited participants truly engage in new and meaningful ways with the sub-groups they have

Ognuno di loro è un esemplare praticante dell’architettura ma non è necessariamente un buon enfatizzatore di «idee condivise al di là della creazione individuale».

Guardando alla lista ufficiale degli invitati, va detto che ci sono molte lacune geografiche e nazionali. Sui 58 partecipanti dei comunicati ufficiali, gli amici di Chipperfield sono 15 dal Regno Unito (e qui nessuna sorpresa), 7 gruppi arrivano dagli Stati Uniti e, forse in ricordo delle sue radici minimaliste, ben 9 dalla

minuscola Svizzera. Nei fatti questo significa che c’è solo un africano (Noero Wolff Architects) e nessun cinese o francese.

«Common Ground» è essenzialmente una reazione alla precedente Biennale, incentrata sull’esperienza ambientale immediata e sensoriale piuttosto che sulla costruzione e sui processi concreti dell’architettura (ben evidenziata dall’installazione di Herzog & de Meuron che mette in luce il problematico rapporto tra media e architettura illustrato dalla controversa Helbphilarmonie di Amburgo). Per colmare evidenti lacune, sono state espresse richieste come il video sullo Shard di Rpbw e la sua presenza a Londra, o il processo partecipativo che sta guidando la trasformazione di Tempelhof, l’aeroporto berlinese dell’epoca della Guerra fredda.

La maggioranza dei partecipanti s’impegnerà però in modi nuovi e significativi con i sotto-

gruppi che hanno portato o valorizzerà piuttosto il loro talento? La Mostra a volte finisce con l’essere un dialogo solo nel senso che molti gruppi sono impegnati a mettere in mostra strategie e tendenze individuali, come l’installazione video di Norman Foster, i cui collaboratori si sono concentrati su di lui.

Nel complesso, Chipperfield è una scelta

inusuale per la curatela di una mostra d’importanza mondiale. Da Vittorio Gregotti, nel 1975, a Paolo Portoghesi, Hans Hollein e Aaron Betsky, i direttori della Biennale, oltre che architetti praticanti, erano impegnati anche nelle pubblicazioni accademiche e nelle attività di curatela. Anche se è uno dei più importanti architetti della

sua generazione, non si è mai pensato a Chipperfield come a una voce energica (come Peter Eisenman o Peter Cook) a favore o contro qualche particolare tendenza delle retoriche architettoniche contemporanee, al di là dell’antiquato minimalismo anni ottanta.

Come Kazuyo Sejima, direttrice nel 2010, è prima di tutto un

architetto, non una figura impegnata al contempo come critico (Gregotti), o storico (Portoghesi), o anche artista (Hollein). La loro esperienza di curatori ha contribuito al successivo ruolo di direttori.

par tecipare ai processi progettuali. Si spera che, come promesso, il progetto di Chipper field «avvii dialoghi» che illustreranno il reale significato del tema.

La Biennale di

In keeping with the title of the exhibition, the specifics of architecture and the vastness of artistic creativity share a great deal of “common ground” both within the official event, and at the numerous collateral events and initiatives organised by the various cultural organisations in and around Venice.

As far as the main section is concerned, the link between architecture and photography is almost organic. See, for example, the documentary photographs by Marina Gonzales and Andreas Gursky of Norman Foster’s Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, or Gabriele Basilico’s collaboration with Roger Diener. As you would expect, photography has its own independent relevance, as in “Unconscious Places”. The small selection of photographs of cities in different countries, taken by Thomas Struth between 1978 and 2012, captures the atmosphere of everyday architecture and is on show in sequence in four different rooms of the Arsenale.

Peter Fischli and David Weiss feature in a solo exhibition on the theme of airports, with a video and a sculpture that were among the artistic duo’s last works before Weiss passed away on April 27th this year. One of the most creative collaborations is that of Martin Boyce, whose specially designed ceiling filters the light to produce an original interpretation of the architectural work of Thomas Demand. Light is also the theme of the work by Olafur Eliasson.

The Mexican “Ruta del Peregrino”, is a mixture of extraordinary landscapes and religious rituals and finds its ideal synthesis in a large, round wooden table at which architects from the different continents and the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei are ideally seated. The documentary by Cristian Manzutto will be shown on the wall. Attention towards the world of art is also highlighted by the presence of the Madrid-based Factum Arte laboratory, responsible for the reproduction of Paolo Veronese’s The Wedding Feast at Cana at the Cini Foundation, commissioned by London studio Fat. There is also a tribute to a great art historian, Wolfgang Wolters, who has devoted much of his life to studying façades of historical buildings in Venice. His works are on show alongside those of the architect, Mario Piana, who directed the renovation of those same buildings, such as the San Giobbe House financed by the British Venice in Peril Fund. Is this an implicit answer to the much criticised restoration of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi by Rem Koolhaas? In that case, it would seem to be more of a playing field than a “common ground”.

At the end of the Arsenale exhibition area, on the Isola delle Vergini outside the Italian Pavilion, Michelangelo Pistoletto’s utopian Third Paradise is the venue for a series of meetings. Ten years on, but almost on the same site as that of the initial presentation of the project at the Art Biennale in 2003, directed by Francesco Bonami. È grande lo «spazio condiviso», per stare al titolo della Mostra, dallo specifico architettonico all’area vasta della creatività artistica. Tanto all’interno della manifestazione ufficiale quanto nei numerosi eventi collaterali o nelle iniziative delle istituzioni culturali veneziane.

Per quanto riguarda la sezione principale, quasi organico è il legame tra architettura e fotografia: vedi Marina Gonzales e Andreas Gursky, che documentano la Hong Kong e Shanghai Bank di Norman Foster, o la collaborazione tra Gabriele Basilico e Roger Diener. Naturalmente la fotografia ha una sua valenza autonoma. Come nella serie «Unconscious Places»: una selezione di scatti, realizzati da Thomas Struth in diverse città dal 1978 al 2012, che restituiscono l’atmosfera dell’architettura quotidiana e sono esposti in sequenza in quattro stanze dell’Arsenale. Peter Fischli e David Weiss, in solitaria con una delle ultime opere a quattro mani, prima della scomparsa di Weiss lo scorso 27 aprile, hanno invece preferito il tema degli aeroporti, esemplificato da un video e una scultura. Tra gli esempi di collaborazione più creativa, quello di Martin Boyce, il quale sta realizzando un apposito soffitto che permette filtrante una lettura originale dell’architettura di Thomas Demand. Al tema della luce è anche riferibile l’intervento di Olafur Eliasson.

La Ruta del Peregrino, percorso di pellegrinaggio messicano nell’intreccio di paesaggio straordinario e rituale religioso, trova un suo ideale compendio in una larga tavola rotonda di legno, attorno a cui siederanno idealmente architetti di diversi continenti e l’artista cinese Ai Weiwei, mentre sulla parete è proiettato il film documentario di Cristian Manzutto. L’attenzione al mondo artistico è sottolineata anche dalla presenza dello studio Factum Arte di Madrid, invitato dallo studio Fat di Londra e autore del facsimile delle «Nozze di Cana» di Paolo Veronese alla Fondazione Cini. C’è anche un omaggio a un grande storico dell’arte, Wolfgang Wolters, che ha soprattutto studiato le facciate degli edifici storici veneziani, gli stessi di cui ha diretto i restauri l’architetto Mario Piana (come la casa di San Giobbe su progetto del britannico Venice in Peril Fund) che espone insieme a lui: sarà un’implicita risposta al contestato progetto di recupero del Fondaco dei Tedeschi di Rem Koolhaas? In questo caso, più che un «terreno comune» parrebbe un terreno di scontro.

Invece, a conclusione del percorso all’Arsenale, nell’isola delle vergini fuori del Padiglione Italia, l’utopia del Terzo Paradiso di Michelangelo Pistoletto, dove sono programmati una serie d’incontri. Quasi nello stesso luogo, ma a dieci anni di distanza dalla prima presentazione del progetto alla Biennale d’arte del 2003.

Chipperfield: more community Interview by Julie Iovine How does the global economic crisis connect with the theme of common ground?

I don't think it's in a direct way but I certainly wanted a theme that had some relevance to this moment.

It's not a crisis Biennale. I don't think an exhibition about architecture is agile enough to make precise statements. Clearly the whole theme of Common Ground was a provocation to the profession to think harder about what we share intellectually and physically in terms of our inspirations, our concerns, and predicaments. The reason I chose this theme is that there is a societal mood shift right now after a period of excessive growth and emphasis on the individual and on the spectacular.

Asking architects to invite other participants resulted in some gaps, how do you account for the absences?

I wanted to avoid the idea that the Biennale is primarily about a List. The List becomes the defining

thing. I wanted to escape that but, of course, you can't. Whoever you invite is going to exclude someone else; the invitation does mean something. Common Ground is the fragile moment where people from diverse and opposite positions agree that they share some things. It's very easy to have common ground if you choose everyone from the same drawer. I wanted to choose from different drawers. If you can put Zaha Hadid and postmodernist Hans Kollhoff in the same space and get people comparing their thoughts, that's interesting.

How broad can the definition of architecture become and still be architecture?

This is an exhibition of architecture. It is not sociology or urban politics.

I am interested in the physical stuff of architecture. Making architecture in South America is very different than making architecture in Europe but that is not

an excuse to act as if they are irrelevant to each other.

The fastest changes in global architecture are happening in places like Africa and China, and yet they do not have a big presence here. Why not?

In the time we had it was very difficult to establish connections in those places. For me while it is true that architects are completely dependent on the societies they work in, I still wanted to stay close to the materiality of architecture. I needed to use practitioners to talk about that. If I was doing a more researched and academic review of architecture tendencies, it would have been fascinating to see, for instance, how colonial architecture in North Africa influenced another generation. But how many issues can you take on? I am working on themes rather than a United Nations approach to individual projects. It's clear this is a Eurocentric exhibition; the biennale is

slightly Eurocentric, and so is architecture culture today. Clearly, China is a huge issue. My concern was spreading ourselves too thin.

Rem Koolhaas has complained that architects are too often pitted against each other, and that is damaging to the profession.

Obviously that's what the whole show is about.

When some of us sit around in bars after some competition, even if we don't like each other's work after a few whiskies, you find you all have a lot of similar interests. If we can do that there why can't we do it professionally? I have so much respect for the talent of architects that I wanted to create a tent where they could show architecture instead of themselves. The free market has confused architects' ability to confess to shared ideas.

That has contributed to the lack of commonality. I wanted to take the pressure off and say you

are all great architects, we know that. Don't impress me with computer renderings of your latest tower. Instead, explain to us where your ideas come from, how you do what you do, and how you contribute to our common understanding of architecture culture.

What was preparing the Biennale like?

I resented not having enough time to see more people. The pressure of time was stressful. It was a little overrun by logistical issues and oconversations were always contaminated by trying to balance budgets and timelines.

Asking people to ask people didn't work that well. It worked nicely that I went to 20 and that brought in 50 but then we started having to plug in the holes. If you are trying to talk about architecture culture now, you have to dig deeper than just who's hot now. The Biennale is not an "Architecture's Got Talent" show.

Many projects invoke the past in ways that suggest

postmodernism. Is that intentional?

Yes. Postmodernism hit when I was at the Architectural Association. It produced the worst architecture but it triggered an important shift in how we think about modernism so we owe it a huge debt.

The Biennale at that time really captured that pivotal moment. That biennale was my model. I also want to identify this moment of change as we reconsider the selfishness of the past 20 years.

What worries you most about architecture today?

I am frightened about architecture that is only about formalism.

5 Architecture has to have meaning, not just novelty. The biggest ambition can't be just to be different. When we only talk about what architecture looks like, its colour or what's in the lobby we are just becoming decorators. We have lost confidence in our ability to really do things.

The conversation has become too introverted.

How come there is such a disconnect between what architects think they are doing and how they wish to serve society and how they really serve society?.

All good architects think they are making a contribution to society: why does society think architects are just a bunch of profiteering egotistical joyriders? We want the same things. That's what Common Ground is about.

Sicuramente desideravo un tema di qualche rilevanza in questo preciso momento storico, ma non ritengo vi sia una relazione diretta: non è una “Biennale della crisi”. A mio parere una mostra di argomento architettonico

non ha la versatilità necessaria per lanciarsi in dichiarazioni di sorta.

Chiaramente il tema “Common Ground” vuole essere una provocazione nei confronti di noi architetti, che troppo spesso non teniamo nella giusta considerazione quanto condividiamo intellettualmente e fisicamente in termini di ispirazione, preoccupazioni e dubbi. Quello che ha guidato la mia scelta è stato un cambio di sensibilità in atto nella società, dopo un periodo segnato da individualismo e ostentazione.

Chiedere alla sua rosa di architetti di invitarne altri ha portato ad alcuni «buchi»: come si spiega le defezioni?

Volevo rifuggire l'idea che la Biennale girasse tutta attorno a una «Lista», del tipo «dentro o fuori», ma non è stato possibile.

Invitare qualcuno significa necessariamente escludere qualcun altro.

«Common Ground» è il fugace momento in cui persone di diverse o addirittura opposte convinzioni accettano di condividere alcune cose. È molto facile trovare un

13ma BIENNALE DI ARCHITETTURA DI VENEZIA terreno comune se si invitano persone tutte dello stesso giro. Io ho voluto pescare in gruppi diversi. È interessante riuscire ad accostare Zaha Hadid e il postmoderno Hans Kollhoff lasciando che la gente confronti i loro modi di pensare.

Quanto si può estendere il concetto di “architettura” perché continui a potersi definire tale?

Questa è una mostra di architettura. Io sono interessato alla pratica dell'architettura. È ovvio che fare architettura in Sud America sia molto diverso rispetto all'Europa, ma qui non stiamo parlando di sociologia o scienze politiche.

Nonostante oggi il fermento architettonico sia concentrato in Africa e in Cina, questi luoghi sono scarsamente rappresentati in Biennale.

Nello scarso tempo a nostra disposizione è stato molto difficile stabilire contatti con quei luoghi.

Sebbene sia convinto della dipendenza degli architetti dalla società in cui agiscono, volevo concentrarmi sull'operatività dell'architettura. E per

parlarne avevo bisogno di chi esercita la professione.

Se mi stessi dedicando a una ricerca di stampo accademico sulle tendenze architettoniche attuali, sarebbe stato affascinante indagare, ad esempio, l'influenza dell'architettura coloniale su tutta una generazione di architetti nordafricani. Ma quante cose si possono fare insieme? Ho lavorato per temi: non siamo alle Nazioni Unite, dove ogni paese deve essere necessariamente rappresentato. Certo, è una mostra eurocentrica; la Biennale lo è per sua stessa natura, così come lo è la cultura architettonica odierna.

Inoltre, la Cina è un argomento impegnativo.

Non volevo disperdere le forze.

Rem Koolhaas ha denunciato l'eccessiva competizione fra gli architetti, sostenendo che questo danneggi la professione. È proprio questo l'argomento della mostra.

Quando ci si ritrova a bere qualcosa al bar dopo un concorso, anche se non ci è piaciuto il lavoro degli altri, dopo un paio di whisky è inevitabile scoprire di avere un sacco di interessi in comune. E se succede lì, perché non dovrebbe accadere anche nella pratica? Ho così tanto rispetto per il talento degli architetti da voler creare uno spazio in cui poter mettere in mostra le

opere invece di loro stessi. Il mercato libero ha inibito la capacità degli architetti di condividere idee. Il mio obiettivo era alleggerirli dalla pressione e dire: «Siete tutti grandi architetti, lo sappiamo.

Non cercate di impressionarci con il render del vostro ultimo grattacielo. Invece, spiegateci da dove vengono le vostre idee e quale sia il vostro contributo alla cultura architettonica».

Come è stato preparare questa Biennale?

Ho risentito del fatto di non avere abbastanza tempo per vedere più gente. I ritmi erano davvero stressanti.

Eravamo sopraffatti dai problemi logistici, e ogni conversazione finiva col trattare di budget e scadenze. Chiedere a qualcuno di chiedere a qualcun altro di venire non ha funzionato benissimo.

Non ci sono stati problemi finché i 20 sono diventati 50, ma poi abbiamo dovuto cercare di riempire i buchi. Se stai cercando di parlare della cultura architettonica odierna, non ti puoi accontentare di chi è à la page: devi andare più a fondo. La Biennale non è un talent show.

Molti progetti si rifanno al passato in maniera vagamente postmoderna. È voluto?

Sì. Il Postmoderno è esploso quando ero all'Architectural

Association. Ha prodotto la peggiore delle architetture ma anche un cambio di prospettiva nel nostro modo di guardare al Moderno, per cui gli dobbiamo molto. La Biennale del 1980 è il mio modello perché ha catturato perfettamente quel momento cruciale.

Voglio mettere l'accento su questo momento di cambiamento in cui stiamo meditando sull'egocentrismo degli ultimi 20 anni.

Cosa la preoccupa di più dell'architettura, oggi?

Mi fa paura il formalismo.

L'architettura non vive solo di novità. Il fine ultimo non può essere quello di differenziarsi dagli altri. Quando parliamo solo del suo aspetto, del suo colore o di cosa ci sia nell'atrio stiamo diventando semplici decoratori.

Abbiamo perso fiducia nella nostra abilità nel «fare» davvero. Ormai c'è troppa confusione. Come si è pervenuti a questo scollamento fra quello che gli architetti pensano di fare, come desidererebbero servire la società e come effettivamente servono la società? Tutti i buoni architetti pensano di dare un contributo alla società: e allora perché la società li ritiene un branco di egotistici e gaudenti parassiti? In realtà vogliamo le stesse cose.

1 of the public purse, then the Biennale has been a good investment.

We have received such investment which is already a good result although sponsors and contributions from donors have been more difficult to obtain.

Participation is high again this year and there are many events that are both linked and not linked to the main ones. Why should a country be present at the Biennale anyway, considering that forms of communication have evolved so extensively?

We have managed to make the Biennale the most important architecture event on the world calendar. From one edition to another a country’s needs change and year after year more and more of them request to be present.

The public and the architects feel the need for the Biennale. In a moment of crisis it is important to have places in which we can trust and where we can interact.

The choice of big names like Sejima and Chipperfield, who are presenting the Biennale this year, has generated some criticism. Some are saying that the choice of the usual big names has led to notable professionals who deal with the real, day to day challenges of design being overlooked.

So, are you not thinking of changing this trend in the future?

Our choices, who represent the world of architecture, are borne out of a complex dialogue comprising two main considerations; the national participants and the general exhibition.

One of the most important, new features of Sejima’s exhibition was the participation of Bahrain. In the main exhibition we have revitalised the participation of countries. If we have Angola this year it is because the Biennale has become the place to be. In the general exhibition you can’t have too many concepts mixed together.

This is the first time that such modest construction techniques have been employed here so explicitly even if, at the same time, the Biennial does have a strong focus on visual architecture. I’m not only interested in the architecture deriving from rich countries! And, anyway, the Biennale is a living body - whoever is missing today can be with us in the future…

So, We imagine that this year the announcement of the next curator will be highly anticipated? …no…but I already know that that will be on everyone’s minds. This Biennale would like to suggest the idea that architects and the public are not reading from the same page. This is a problem that can hopefully be tackled over time. The next Biennale will mark a further step in research development and will consider the supply and demand relationship between what the public wants and needs and what the architects design and build. This balance is something that has to be possible without having to perform miracles. In Italy an entire country

question of education and political choice. The Biennale remains one of the few public, Italian institutions to focus on architecture. How does this responsibility make you feel?

Politics always wants to have a say in education.

And art gives us the ability to govern ourselves. However, too many want to push a patrimonial vision of culture based on economic interests and not one of learning and development. However, this is something that has to be taught. The Biennale is playing its part in that it can demonstrate how architecture can be more about emotions than economic interests. Sixtysix universities, twentyfive of which are Italian, have signed an agreement to come to the Biennale as a way to teach students that a vision of culture can be had through learning and development. It is this inspiration that I’m interested in creating cultural and not too focused on economics.

Perché oggi un paese deve comunque essere presente alla Biennale, considerando anche che sono evolute le forme di comunicazione?

Siamo riusciti a rendere la Biennale il più importante appuntamento mondiale di architettura, le richieste dei paesi cambiano di edizione in edizione e aumentano di anno in anno. Il pubblico e i progettisti sentono il bisogno della Biennale: in un momento di crisi si ha bisogno di luoghi nei quali avere fiducia e di vedere e toccare le cose.

La scelta di grandi nomi come Sejima e Chipperfield a dirigere la Biennale ha generato un fenomeno che si è ripetuto anche quest’anno: la presenza dei soliti “noti” dell’architettura e l’assenza di professionisti attivi in contesti in cui si giocano le vere sfide della progettazione. Non pensa che bisognerebbe cambiare questa tendenza?

La rappresentazione del mondo nasce da un complesso dialogo tra due componenti: le partecipazioni nazionali e la mostra generale. Una delle novità più importanti della mostra di Sejima fu la partecipazione del Bahrain. Con la mostra principale abbiamo

rivitalizzato le partecipazioni dei paesi.

Se quest’anno c’è l’Angola è perché la Biennale è diventato un luogo appetito. Alla mostra generale non si possono poi attribuire troppi compiti: rappresentare una visione e al tempo stesso rappresentare genericamente il mondo.

Sono presidente di un’istituzione che deve essere mossa da spirito di ricerca e non da ambizione totalitaristica.

Quest’anno, per esempio, c’è un’architetta indiana (Anupama Kundoo, Ndr) che sta costruendo una casa nelle Corderie. Il mondo meno attrezzato di tecnologie o di denaro non è mai stato presente in una mostra con così tanta forza, anche se a modo nostro, perché la Biennale ha un forte connotato di architettura visiva. Non mi interessa solo l’architettura dei paesi ricchi, mi interessa la crisi dei paesi ricchi e la nonarchitettura dei paesi ricchi! E comunque, la Biennale è un corpo vivente: ciò che manca oggi potrà esserci in futuro…

Allora quest’anno potrebbe annunciare con largo anticipo chi sarà il prossimo curatore? …no… però so già quale sarà il filone di pensiero.

La Biennale si propone il compito di dire che nel mondo c’è uno scollamento nel rapporto tra architettura e società civile. Si tratta di un nodo che si può sciogliere nel tempo. La prossima Biennale sarà un ulteriore passo nella ricerca della valorizzazione di quelli che sono i necessari punti d’incontro tra una domanda, che dev’essere promossa, e un’offerta che deve rendersi disponibile, senza dovere a tutti i costi «miracol mostrare». In Italia c’è da ricostruire un intero paese fatto di capannoni industriali che saranno in disuso e un numero enorme di architetti laureati che non sanno cosa fare. Bisogna passare dall’individualismo consumista a uno zoccolo comunitario.

Forse è anche un problema di pedagogia e di scelte politiche. La

Biennale rimane una delle poche istituzioni pubbliche italiane che parla di architettura.

Come sentite questa responsabilità?

Politica vuole dire fare alta pedagogia. È l’arte che forma alla capacità di autogovernarsi. Molti purtroppo propagandano una visione patrimoniale della cultura, non di apprendimento e valorizzazione. È qualcosa che va insegnato. La Biennale è un tassello importante di questa pedagogia: dimostra che l’architettura può essere molto più emozionante di un produttore di accessori e orpelli decorativi. 66 università, di cui 25 italiane, hanno firmato una convenzione per venire a visitare la Biennale. È questo l’indotto che m’interessa creare: culturale, non tanto economico.

1 The representations are events in their own right (often in the form of installations) and each show is presented as what is almost always a self-contained experience. A tendency enhanced by the increasingly large number of collateral events that have sprung up around the Biennale. The focus is on the narration, more often than not limiting architecture to artistic shapes and underlining the individuality of the work. Strangely, the protagonists of the seven 21st century editions of the Biennale have often been the same, but, even stranger, the names of the many players in the decision-making, construction and living processes that make architecture a unique human work, have almost always been entirely missing. The architecture on show in the Corderie or the Giardini has become increasingly formalist and personalised. A

tendency that is certainly not unique to Architecture but which has also characterised other Biennale events over the last decade. The only exception was the 2006 edition, curated by Ricky Burdett, which introduced a change of scale to address the issue of cities and the relationship between urban transformation and society. Apart from a few exceptions (such as the Italian Pavilion in 2008 or the “Transformations” section on the reorganisation of existing buildings in the Corderie in 2004), preference has been given to the concept of time based exclusively on the dimension of the present moment. The most important thing is the event; the Biennale appears to be selfsufficient, justified by growing numbers of visitors and coverage in the press, on TV and now also by social networks, perhaps unwittingly retracing the path of the

One interesting novelty is the increasing amount of space given to schools of architecture.

Important ideas; some truly significant (as in 2006). They are, nonetheless, part of a representation in which architecture is a “project” and the

exhibition is seen more or less as a happening.

The strongest image to have emerged over the last twelve years is the dominance of form over content, and the complete setting aside of any attempt to change public opinion on architecture. The images are still extremely conventional, even when

using Twitter or Facebook, because social imaginary does not address the question of what architecture is.

Biennale exhibitions give an honest account of a society wrapped up in the complexity of city life. They have come to accept its slothful relativism and a form of multiculturalism that has

given up any idea of culture as a social as well as financial resource. As a matter of fact, and perhaps exceeding the intentions of the various curators, the Biennale shows have been the sites of a contamination that was not planned. Perhaps we need to start again from here, keeping an eye on

the way cultures – including architecture – change and contaminate one another. The most annoying thing that has emerged from some national pavilions is the use of formal research in an attempt to overcome standardisation, where the ideas of communities confined within presumed identities cohabit with projects designed by the jet-set architectural crowd of the day.

This year’s Biennale follows on from the previous five editions, perhaps with an even greater risk of underlining the distance between statements and practices. “Common Ground” is a fascinating metaphor that begs reflection on the cooperative nature of architecture, the role of its players and the scales in play. If the 54 architects are essentially concerned with their representations this will only underline the artistic side of architecture. But any opinion must be measured against the choices of an audience that has never had so many protagonists and rules.

Architecture is a highly complex and fascinating comédie humaine.

Perhaps its presentation, the actors, the dialogues, the forms and even the stage itself are in need of a profound overhaul. And a director who has meditated upon James Joyce’s “Finnegans Wake”.

La tendenza è accentuata dal fiorire, attorno alla Biennale, di manifestazioni collaterali sempre più rilevanti. Sono le forme del racconto a prevalere, riducendo l’architettura a figure quasi sempre artistiche ed esaltando l’autorialità dell’opera. È singolare il fatto che spesso si ripetano, nelle sette Biennali degli anni duemila, i nomi dei protagonisti, ma ancor più che manchino, quasi totalmente, i tanti attori del processo decisionale, costruttivo e abitativo che fanno dell’architettu-

ra un’opera umana unica. Visitando le Corderie o i Giardini emerge un’architettura sempre più formalista e personalizzata. Una tendenza indubbiamente in sintonia con quanto questo decennio ha enfatizzato anche in altre Biennali, non solo di Architettura. Una tendenza negata solo nel 2006, quando il curatore Ricky Burdett ha puntato a un salto di scala, occupandosi infatti della metropoli, del rapporto tra urbanizzazione e società.

Fatte salve alcune eccezioni (come il padiglione italiano nel 2008 o la sezione «Trasformazioni» sulla riconversione di edifici esistenti alle Corderie nel 2004), è stata privilegiata una concezione del tempo basata sull’esclusiva dimensione del presente. Prevale l’avvenimento; la Biennale appare sufficiente a se stessa, legittimata da un crescente consumo di visitatori, di servizi giornalistici e televisivi e poi di social network, ripercorrendo forse involontariamente la strada delle Esposizioni universali dopo il 1900.

Un’interessante novità è il crescente spazio assegnato alle scuole di architettura. Sono tentativi importanti; alcuni davvero significativi (come nel 2006). Restano tuttavia all’interno di una rappresentazione dell’architettura come «progetto» e dell’esposizione come luogo di un’esperienza quasi évémentielle.

L’immagine più forte che emerge da questi dodici anni di Biennali è il prevalere dell’allestimento sui contenuti, nonché la rinuncia anche solo alla scommessa d’incidere sull’idea che l’opinione pubblica si fa dell’architettura. Ma gli immaginari rimangono fortemente conservatori anche quando si usano Twitter o Facebook, perché non si mette in discussione che cosa sia architettura negli immaginari sociali. Le Biennali raccontano con onestà una società immersa nella complessità della condizione abitativa metropolitana. Di essa si accettano ormai il relativismo accidioso e

un multiculturalismo che ha rinunciato a far emergere la cultura come risorsa sociale e non solo economica. In realtà, e forse al di là delle intenzioni dei tanti curatori, le Biennali sono state i luoghi di una contaminazione non programmata. Forse da questa eredità sarà necessario ripartire, con un’attenzione a culture come quelle architettoniche - che si modificano proprio contaminandosi tra loro.

E cercare di superare l’omologazione attraverso ricerche formaliste è l’aspetto più irritante che emerge da alcuni padiglioni nazionali, nei quali quasi sempre le idee di comunità racchiuse entro presunte identità convivono con progetti firmati da architetti, malamente definiti archistar.

Quella che si apre oggi appare una Biennale che si colloca nel solco delle cinque precedenti, forse rischiando ancor più di sottolineare la distanza tra affermazioni e pratiche. «Common Ground» è un’affascinante metafora che richiederebbe un ripensamento sulla natura cooperativa del fare architettura, sul gioco di attori e scale che mette in scena.

Coinvolgere i cinquantaquattro architetti essenzialmente sulla rappresentazione non fa che ribadire la natura artistica dell’architettura. Ma ogni giudizio andrà misurato sulle scelte compiute da una platea mai così ampia di protagonisti e d’impostazioni.

L’architettura è una comédie humaine di

straordinaria complessità e fascino. Forse la sua rappresentazione richiederebbe un mutamento profondo

della messa in scena, degli attori, dei dialoghi, delle forme e persino della scena stessa. E un regista che abbia

meditato i «Finnegans Wake» di James Joyce.

Angola: empathetic energy for Africa

Cazenga district, Luanda

The Angola Pavilion houses a project for Luanda that can be copied in other African cities. Curated by the director of “Beyond Entropy”, Stefano Rabolli Pansera, it is one of the results of a study conducted by Pansera in 2009 at London’s Architectural Association School. The theme is energy: not energy in terms of applied technology. The mission of “Beyond Entropy”, a no-profit organisation active in Europe, the Mediterranean region and Africa, is based on one of the pillars of the Arte Povera movement: materials and their transformation. The aim is to consider energy as a poetic device capable of producing resources and defining spaces through the interaction of physical and human energy.

A full-scale model of a portion of the plan for the Cazenga district of Luanda is on show in Venice. Why Angola? Its capital city is the paradigm of a situation commonly encountered in many other large cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, characterised by large numbers of people moving in from rural areas and energy production and water management issues.

The project was developed from the observation and understanding of the mechanisms of the African city in which different areas have different functions depending on the time of day and day of the week. It proposes an infrastructure network that takes into account the local habits and customs and uses a local natural resource, Arundo donax, a perennial cane that grows at a rate of about one metre a month. Arundo is cultivated in the spaces between the buildings, the “common ground”. The aim is to upgrade public spaces, purify the water, by exploiting the cane’s filtering capabilities, and generate electricity (once cut, the canes are arranged in the various squares around the city, which act as open-air warehouses, where they ferment and produce biomass). The project, in which the various steps in the processes of filtering the water, harvesting and transforming the canes are carried out in different urban spaces and infrastructures, is awaiting government approval and funding.

Il Padiglione della Repubblica dell’Angola ospita un progetto per Luanda che si propone come esempio replicabile in altre città africane. Curato dal direttore di «Beyond Entropy», Stefano Rabolli Pansera, è fra i risultati di una ricerca avviata dallo stesso Pansera nel 2009 all’Architectural Association di Londra. Il tema è l’energia, ma non quella di cui si parla spesso in termini di tecnologia applicata. La missione dell’associazione no profit «Beyond Entropy», impegnata in Europa, Mediterraneo e Africa, parte da uno dei temi portanti dell’Arte povera: la materia e la sua trasformazione. L’obiettivo: utilizzare l’energia come uno strumento poetico in grado di produrre risorse e definire spazi assecondando le energie fisiche e umane che v’interagiscono.

A Venezia è riprodotta una porzione in scala reale del piano per il quartiere di Cazenga, a Luanda. Perché l’Angola? La sua capitale rappresenta il paradigma di una situazione simile a molte altre grandi città dell’Africa sub-sahariana, caratterizzate da importanti fenomeni d’inurbamento e dalla mancanza d’infrastrutture per la produzione di energia e per l’adduzione e smaltimento delle acque. Partendo dall’osservazione e dall’accettazione dei meccanismi della città africana, in cui le aree assolvono funzioni diverse a seconda delle ore e dei giorni della settimana, il progetto propone una rete infrastrutturale in sinergia con consuetudini consolidate di vita comunitaria e l’utilizzo di una risorsa naturale locale, l’Arundo donax, una canna perenne che cresce al ritmo di circa 1 metro al mese. Gli spazi fra gli edifici, il «common ground», vengono destinati alla coltivazione dell’Arundo con l’obiettivo di riqualificare gli spazi pubblici, depurare le acque grazie alla capacità di filtraggio della pianta, generare elettricità (i fusti dell’Arundo, tagliati e disposti in piazze che fungono anche da depositi a cielo aperto, se stoccati fermentano e producono biomassa). Il progetto, che organizza in spazi urbani e infrastrutture i vari passaggi di filtraggio delle acque, raccolta e trasformazione del materiale erbaceo, è in attesa di approvazione e finanziamento da parte del governo.

Republic of Kosovo: “The Filigree Maker” Two questions to Bekim Ramku, commissioner (architect and political advisor to Kosovo’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports).

What does Kosovo have to say regarding the theme “Common Ground”?

Participation, the first time for us, is very important. Through “Common ground” we are trying to show our architectural background over the centuries. Kosovo has always been a crossroads between east and west, so we look at the theme as a platform for the inner dialogue between the different cultures present in our nation. The pavilion, which is an interactive ground for collaboration between Kosovo and international visitors, will invite people to select different buildings and connect them to six basic emotions.

And contemporary Architecture in Kosovo?

When you pose this question to a common Kosovan citizen, he will most likely ask himself “is there any?”. But we had a war in 1999 and, apart from the physical devastation, more than 50% of buildings were completely or partially destroyed. Although we are grateful for their humnitarian help, what the UN mission did in architecture and urban planning could be best seen by googling “Kosovo” or “Prishtina’s street”.

After the war there was a period of uncontrolled development in which you did not even need to hire an architect. Now I see the light at the end of the tunnel in the new architects educated abroad that are trying to change, although their impact is nowhere near that of the young Slovenian architects a decade ago. We believe that the exposure of our community to events like this and at international competitions will open Kosovo up to the world of architecture. With that we will gain a lot.

Che cosa ha da dire il Kosovo sul tema «Common Ground»?

Partecipare alla Biennale, la prima per noi, è un’occasione della massima importanza. Attraverso «Common Ground» cercheremo di mostrare la nostra architettura attraverso i secoli. Il Kosovo è sempre stato un crocevia tra oriente e occidente, il tema quindi sarà un trampolino di lancio per il dialogo interno fra le diverse culture presenti nel paese. Il padiglione, interattivo terreno di collaborazione fra il Kosovo e i visitatori internazionali, inviterà le persone a selezionare edifici e ricondurli alle sei emozioni di base.

E l’architettura contemporanea in Kosovo?

A questa domanda un kosovaro si chiede se esista. Ma nel 1999 eravamo in guerra e, a parte la devastazione fisica, oltre il 50% degli edifici è stato interamente o parzialmente distrutto e gli interventi della missione Onu, anche se le siamo grati per gli aiuti umanitari, possono essere visti cercando su Google «Kosovo» o «Prishtina’s street». Alla guerra è seguito un periodo di sviluppo edilizio incontrollato in cui non occorreva neppure incaricare un architetto. Adesso vedo una luce in fondo al tunnel: i nuovi architetti che hanno studiato all’estero e stanno cercando di cambiare le cose, anche se non siamo ancora ai livelli degli architetti sloveni di un decennio fa.

Crediamo inoltre che la nostra presenza a eventi come questo e a gare internazionali aiuterà il Kosovo ad aprirsi al mondo dell’architettura. Con enorme giovamento.

Kuwait: “Kethra” “Kethra”: affluence, wealth, overabundance. This is the theme of the pavilion of a country in which the architectural debate is attempting to achieve a balance between the vast resources available (which have, in recent years, led to an increase in the practice of demolition and construction of new buildings) and the need to safeguard the architectural legacy of the pre-oil period. The pavilion was commissioned by the Kuwait National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters to a group of young architects, led by Zahra Ali Baba (1983), along with Deema Al-Ghunaim and Ricardo Camacho, who is Portuguese. Kuwait introduced its participation at the Biennale with a series of roundtable discussions held in Kuwait City in July and early August. It will be followed by a study that will be completed in 2013-14.

National Pavilions: new entries 13 Peru: “Yucun or Inhabit the Desert” Twenty Peruvian architecture firms gathered to discuss and design a new city that will be built in Olmos, in northern Peru.

The opportunity was provided by the recently-completed construction of a 20 km tunnel channelling water from the Amazon basin to Peru’s desert coast. The tunnel Ceramic model of one of the 25-hectare districts will allow 40,000 hectares of desert to be turned into farmland, and create 250,000 for the new city in Olmoshectare district new jobs. The proposal stems from a reflection on how to inhabit the Peruvian desert, based on the example of pre-Columbian urban planning. Each of the 20 firms designed a 25-hectare district, where the central architectural concern is the common urban space. The result is a common urban fabric that combines diversity and cohesion, small and large, urban and rural, the old and the new. The concept will be represented in a ceramic model.

Venti studi peruviani di architettura si sono riuniti attorno a un tavolo per progettare una nuova città che verrà costruita a Olmos, nel nord del paese. L’occasione è offerta dalla costruzione, appena terminata, di un tunnel di 20 Km che porta acqua dal bacino della foresta amazzonica all’arido deserto della costa peruviana. Questo tunnel ha ampliato la frontiera agricola di 40.000 ettari, generando 250.000 nuovi posti di lavoro. La proposta progettuale parte da una riflessione sul come abitare nel deserto del Perù, prendendo a modello il sistema urbanistico delle città precolombiane. Ognuno dei 20 studi ha disegnato un quartiere di 25 ettari, che viene rappresentato concettualmente con un plastico in ceramica, in cui lo spazio urbano comune è al centro della preoccupazione architettonica. Il risultato è un tessuto urbano comune che combina la diversità con la coesione, il piccolo con il grande, l’urbanità con la ruralità, l’antico con il moderno.

After its success at the Thai film festival with “Film on the rocks Yao Noi” (photo), the installation by German architect Ole Scheeren has been shipped to Venice. In a self-referential, metaartistic afflatus, the floating auditorium hosts the world première of the film “Against All Rules” by Horst Brandenburg, an insight into Scheeren’s work and philosophy. POROUS CITY For the first time this year there is a pavilion dedicated to the European Union, hosted by Spazio Punch on Giudecca and inaugurated yesterday.

“Porous City”, by Winy Maas (from the Dutch firm Mvrdv and founder of the think tank The Why Factory), is a grid of 676 Lego towers at a scale of 1:1.000. The aim is to promote the inclusion of architectural discourse within EU development policies. This is the launching pad of the EU City Program, promoted by the European Forum for Architectural Policies (Efap) which today presents its EU City Manifesto.

Per la prima volta l’Unione europea viene rappresentata in un padiglione dedicato, presso lo Spazio Punch alla Giudecca inaugurato ieri. «Porous City», affidata a Winy Maas (dello studio olandese Mvrdv e fondatore del think tank The Why Factory), è una composizione di 676 torri in Lego in scala 1:1.000. Lo scopo è porre l’accento sull’importanza di sfruttare l’architettura come punto di coesione tra i paesi europei. È questo il trampolino di lancio dell’EU City Program, promosso dal Forum europeo per le politiche architettoniche (Efap) che oggi presenta l’EU City Manifesto.

ARCHITECTS MEET IN FUORI BIENNALE The third international meeting organised by the Italian Association of Architecture and Criticism (Aiac) and presS/Tfactory will be held during the Biennale (by invitation only). Objective: to find promising young architects from around the world. The biannual publication “Backstage Architecture” featuring the projects by young architects aged under 35, selected by 57 young critics from their respective countries, will be presented today at Palazzo Widmann. The Aiac’s chairman Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi will also present the issue of the “A10” magazine dedicated to Italian architecture. A debate on the state of architecture in the crisis will follow, with contributions by the magazine’s European correspondents. The winners of the 2012 edition of the “Young Italian Architects” and “Young Critics” competitions for architects under 35, organised by presS/Tletter and professione Architetto, will be announced tomorrow at the Iuav University.

Architecture is cinema too, and the Biennale is the capital of architecture and cinema. Having been screened in Rotterdam, New York, Seoul, Moscow, Istanbul and Santiago, the latest architectural films have come to the Venetian lagoon. Italy has never hosted a truly international festival before: a serious shortcoming that has been remedied by Design Onscreen, a non-profit foundation based in Denver dedicated to producing, promoting and preserving documentaries on architecture and design. 16 films, all free and open to the public, followed by meetings with directors, architects (Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster, David Chipperfield, Vittorio Garrati, Steven Holl, Rick Joy) and producers. One European première, “Modern Tide: Midcentury Architecture on Long Island”, and 9 Italian premières: “Peter Eisenman: University of Phoenix Stadium for the Arizona Cardinals”, “Coast Modern”, “Mission Statements: The Architecture of Dutch Diplomacy”, “Diller Scofidio+Renfro. Reimagining Lincoln Center and the High Line”, “Rick Joy: Interludes”, “Steven Holl: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Bloch Building”, “Unfinished Spaces”, “Eames: The Architect and the Painter”, “How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster?”. Two Italian documentaries, both produced in 2011: “43 colonne in scena a Bilbao” (“43 columns on scene in Bilbao”), by Leonardo Baraldi and Eleonora Sarasin, and “Unfinished Italy”, by Benoit Felici.

L’architettura è anche cinema, e la Biennale diventa capitale dell’architettura e del cinema. ADHESIVES–SEALANTS–CHEMICAL PRODUCTS FOR BUILDING

The Dursilite, as other materials of the same label, has been used for the restoration works of the Museo Archeologico Regionale “Antonio Salinas” in Palermo, planned by Stefano Biondo. Structural walls, ceilings, floors, and finishes have been involved in the operation. The works, still in progress, were started by Mapei in 2010, in order to return the building to his original appearance.
