Pavilions: our view of the Nations by Alan Brake, Roberta Chionne, Julie Iovine and William Menking
Nordic Pavilion At quite a few national pavilions, the theme “Common Ground” comes down to little more than shared interests. But at the Nordic Pavilion, the ground underfoot is literally shared by three countries, Norway, Sweden and Finland (Denmark has its own pavilion nearby, while Alvar Aalto’s wooden Finnish pavilion, felled by a tree, has just been reconstructed). This year, 32 architects all born after 1962 were asked to express Nordic identity. Capturing the ineluctable luminosity of the lands of

the midnight sun proves hit and miss - from birdhouses shaped like famous buildings to a cube made of rosehip bush roots from a seaside resort.

On meeting Sinclair at the ‘Serra dei Gardini’ just before the ‘A Better World’ conference start he shows me his striking new purchase; a bag made from recyclable materials which perfectly matches his vibrant personality. The conference draws attention to his recent ONG Architecture for Humanity projects in Haiti, Romania and South America. There are many other places where the Association has a presence including in Italy (in Naples and Pantelleria) Each project
brings together individuals, local and international institutions and companies (often big names) who are willing and able to finance them. A recent collaboration with the Italian ENEL for projects in Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Peru has found new ways to use recyclables in poor countries where social disadvantages are rife. He confirms that he is more interested in improving the lives of people who live with difficult circumstances rather than focusing on architecture for architectures sake. He is particularly interested in improving conditions for
the young through building sports centres as a way to bring people together. You can also see the winners of the ‘[Un]restrictedAccess’co mpetition at Palazzo Bembo. The tender to turn the once military zone into a communal area was put out by AFH.
