Conference Co-Chairs ZHANINA BOYADZHIEVA Designer + Business Development, Leers Weinzapfel Associates

Boyadzhieva has worked on variety of academic and infrastructure projects including: the Condorcet Campus Competition (Paris), the John W. Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst, and, currently, the Harvard Allston Energy Facility Plant. In 2017, she co-founded the Girl UNinterrupted research initiative, and received the BWAF Tribune Award 2019. She has taught at Boston Architectural College and has been a guest critic at Harvard GSD, Northeastern University, Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Kuwait University. She received her MArch from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

KEVIN BELL Associate, Leers Weinzapfel Associates

Bell’s work lies at the intersection of architecture, urban design, and infrastructure. He most recently led the design of the technically complex Middlesex Community College Academic Arts Center in Lowell, MA, and a theater addition to the West End House Boys & Girls Club in Allston, MA. Bell is currently working on the Dana Hall renovation for Dartmouth College. Within the firm, he leads the technology integration process, helping to guide digital direction. He has been a guest critic at several area architecture schools.

Speakers KEN AMANO Corporate Quality Manager, Consigli Construction

Amano helps lead building-enclosure review and design-assist, in addition to overseeing overall quality management companywide. Having joined Consigli following 12 years with William Rawn Associates, Amano has a dual perspective of how design is realized through construction. Recently, he has been part of the Boston Public Library and the Harvard Smith Campus Center construction. He received his B.S. in Architecture from MIT.

ROY G. BARRIS Associate Partner, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

Barris has over 30 years’ experience in the design of large-scale buildings in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He worked closely with Henry N. Cobb on the design of One Dalton: Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences in Boston’s Back Bay, along with the adjacent 30 Dalton residential tower and Belvidere Park at the towers’ base. Projects currently in construction include: twin residential towers at the $2B Century Plaza development in Los Angeles and the 13,000-employee India headquarters campus of a global financial company. Prior to joining PCF&P, Barris worked at the studios of Eric Owen Moss, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, and Moshe Safdie. He has a MArch from Yale University.

DAVID CARLSON Deputy Director of Urban Design, Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA)

Carlson started at BPDA 35 years earlier as a student intern from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and has included involvement with BPDA teams in shaping the skyline and growth of Boston in all sectors. For over 20 years, he also served as the Executive Director of the Boston Civic Design Commission, which advises the BPDA on the public realm impacts of major developments. Carlson was one of the Boston Municipal Research Bureau’s 2015 Shattuck Award winners.

HENRY N. COBB Founding Partner, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

A founding partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, Cobb is lead designer of One Dalton. His practice has embraced a wide variety of building types around the world, including the John Hancock Tower and John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse in Boston, Harvard Center for Government and International Studies, and the Portland Museum of Art, Maine. Current works in progress include: the Century Plaza residential towers in Los Angeles and the International African American Museum in Charleston, SC.

Speakers DEBORAH COLLINS Director of Sales & Marketing, Four Seasons Private Residences One Dalton Street

Collins provides a unique experience and perspective on the creation and operation of new development marking and on-site sales strategy, process, and procedures for new luxury residential developments from inception through sell out and closing. NICOLA HABERBOSCH Associate, Knippers Helbig

A registered architect and certified facade engineer, Haberbosch has a strong background in high-performance building envelopes. Her work is characterized by a focus on integrative processes and close collaboration between design, engineering, material science, building physics, and fabrication. Haberbosch works as a project manager on high-profile facade projects in the U.S., including Harvard University’s new Allston Science and Engineering Complex.

AMY KORTÉ President, Arrowstreet

Korté leads the design of the firm’s largescaled mixed-use, commercial, and infrastructure projects with a focus on how shifts in technology and social trends impact cities and buildings. In addition, Korté directs AIR, a series of research and development incubators at Arrowstreet, ranging from mixed reality and responsive environments to mobility and mass customization. She has a MArch from Harvard and a BFA in Environmental Design from Parsons.

HENRY MOSS Principal, Bruner/Cott

Moss specializes in the technical and building history aspects of architecture that inform both delicate restoration and large-scale adaptive reuse projects. He writes about the theory and practice of architecture as it relates to historic properties and is a frequent speaker at national and regional conferences on preservation technology. Moss is a founder of DoCoMoMo/US New England; vice-president of Historic Boston Incorporated; on the Properties Committee of Historic New England; and a sustainability advisor to the Boston Preservation Alliance.

MATT NOBLETT Partner, Behnisch Architekten

Noblett has worked in various American practices, including Rafael Viñoly Architects, where he served as project manager for projects in Boston, California, Las Vegas, and Chicago. In 2007, he joined Behnisch Architekten, Boston, and has been serving as Partner in Charge there since 2009. He has lectured at universities in Boston, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, and Mexico. An AIA member and NCARB-certified architect, Noblett obtained his BS in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign, and a MArch from MIT.

MATT SHAW Executive Editor, The Architect’s Newspaper

In addition to The Architect’s Newspaper, Shaw has worked for the Columbia Laboratory for Architectural Broadcasting (C-Lab), Storefront for Art and Architecture, Architizer, and has been published in The Architectural Review, Beyond, Domus, and Icon. He wrote and researched two editions of Domus‘ guidebook Europe’s Top 100 Architecture and Design Schools. He leads the experimental research group the Critical Method Unit (CMU) at Syracuse University NYC Architecture Program and has been an invited critic at numerous schools including Yale, Columbia, and UCLA. Shaw is also the founder and co-editor of Mockitecture, a half-manifesto/half-satire collection of architectural debauchery.

WINNE STOPPS Associate Principal, Leers Weinzapfel Associates

Stopps serves as the project manager for Harvard District Energy Facility and a Central Energy Plant for Tufts University. She has also worked on Phase II Expansion of the University of Pennsylvania Gateway Complex Chiller Plant. Her portfolio includes a challenging vertical addition at the Harvard Science Center. She was also the project manager and Programmer for two University of Connecticut Social Sciences Buildings. Stopps recently participated in I.D.E.A. Campus Energy 2019, Harvard Business School’s conference “Leveraging Data & Technology” (Boston, 2018), as well as PLAN Perspective Conference (New York, 2018).

Workshops Presenters JACK ALVERANGA Research Scientist, Wyss Institute

Alvarenga works on adaptive materials. He is intrigued by the design, development, and characterization of innovative materials systems that serve a purpose and can make an impact outside the laboratory. His work is driven by the belief that fundamental and radical materials research will be crucial to addressing several of the issues facing contemporary society, including energy efficiency and sustainability. Alvarenga has a B.S. in Physics and an M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from RIT.

PAMELA CABRERA Project Engineer, Transsolar

Cabrera’s research centers on building science and new material assemblies for passive climate control systems. Her professional experience has alternated between New York and Lima, where she co-ran the studio CE-AD for three years. She is a partner at the Peruvian NGO Construye Identidad, where she contributes with research on the development of vernacular building and materials. She joins Transsolar as a project engineer in July. She has a BArch from The Cooper Union and a Master’s in Design Studies in Energy and Environment from Harvard GSD, where she received the Daniel L. Schodek Award for Technology and Sustainability.

GUSTAV FAGERSTRÖM Senior Associate, Walter P Moore

Fagerström leads computational modeling for structural and facade engineering at Walter P Moore. He has global experience in all stages of projects in over 10 different countries, having practiced with Urban Future Organization, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, UNStudio, and BuroHappold Engineering. His work has been exhibited and published in Europe, the Americas, and Asia and presented at Autodesk University, the Venice Architecture Biennale, CAADRIA, ACADIA, FABRICATE, and the SmartGeometry conference. Currently, he is a faculty member at Pratt Institute and a consultant at PennDesign. Fagerström has also served on various design juries and lectured at Yale, the Architectural Association, UCL Bartlett, the Royal Institute of Technology, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm.

JONATHAN GRINHAM Lecturer in Architecture and Research Associate, Harvard Graduate School of Design and Research

Grinham’s work asks how the design of conventional and emerging material technologies can address architecture’s big problem: energy and where we get it. This question has led to the development of novel technologies and publications around vascular-thin-film heat exchange, nano-scale thermal tuning, and the coupling of breathable materials to buoyancy-driven ventilation. Grinham has taught technology seminars at Harvard and MIT, as well as design studios at the Catholic University of America and Virginia Tech. His professional practice ranges from super-tall mixeduse buildings (while at SOM Chicago) to fiberglass composite structures (Studio 27 Architecture, Washington, DC) to facade consulting (Mass Design Group, Boston, MA).

LARRY JONES Associate Director, Atelier Ten

With a background in environmental engineering and management systems, Jones has consulted on over 100 LEED-certified and LEED-targeted projects. He successfully manages multiple benchmarking systems including: LEED, Living Building Challenge, and Estidama for major institutional, cultural, and commercial projects. Recent projects include: the LEED Platinum and Living Certified Frick Park Environmental Center, the LEED Gold Tufts Science and Engineering Complex, the LEED Gold Sandy Hook School, and Dana Hall Library at Dartmouth College. Jones’s active involvement with other organizations includes: the United States Green Building Council where he is an appointed LEED Fellow, Green Business Certification Institute, and International Living Future Institute (ILFI), as well as teaching involvements at Yale School of Architecture and Georgia Institute of Technology. Jones has a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Syracuse University.

NATHAN KING Senior AEC Industry Engagement Leader, Autodesk

King develops applied research collaborations between Industry, design practice, and academia. Prior to joining Autodesk, King was a Director at MASS Design Group, collaborating on the development and deployment of innovative building technologies, medical devices, and evaluation methods for application in resource-limited settings. He is a faculty member at Virginia Tech, teaching courses in Industrial Design, Architecture, Construction, and Engineering and a visiting lecturer at Harvard GSD, focusing on topics relating to automation in design and construction. King has a Doctor of Design from Harvard GSD with a focus on additive manufacturing and robotics in design and construction.

KEVIN MISKE CEO, Building Blocks

Miske oversees strategic direction and financial and operational performance. Under his leadership, Building Blocks has developed innovative building envelope products, and has achieved several milestones including: building a state-of-the-art manufacturing operation, developing unitized GFRC wall systems, and achieving rapid commercial growth. Previously, Miske worked as a management consultant for Andersen Consulting and Fortune 100 businesses such as: McDonald’s, CNA Insurance, and United Airlines. He holds a B.S. in Biophysics and an M.B.A. from University of Illinois–Urbana, and an M.S. in Bioengineering from University of Illinois–Chicago.

DONALD PRESS President, Okalux North America

Press is responsible for the growth of an aesthetically unique line of energy-efficient, insulated, architectural glasses. He has 35 years’ experience in the field of glass and special glazing, most recently leading the Architectural Division of SCHOTT North America. An accomplished presenter, he has spoken at MIT and the National AIA Show.

PETER STATTLER Vice President, Okalux North America

Stattler is responsible for managing a network of representatives throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as all marketing-related initiatives. He has 20 years’ experience in the glass field, most recently as the Business Development Manager for SCHOTT North America.

STAN SU Director of Enclosure Design, Morphosis

At Morphosis, Su oversees the detail design and technical resolution of complex enclosure systems, working in close collaboration with the project teams, specialty consultants, and contractors to ensure design quality is upheld throughout the virtual design and construction (VDC) process. Su brings extensive experience in both architectural design practices and facades-specific consultant teams for all phases of design and construction. His recent focus includes: the Orange County Museum of Art, Costa Mesa, CA; the New U.S. Embassy Campus, Beirut, Lebanon; and the Kolon One and Only Tower, Seoul, Korea.
