Conference Co-Chairs EDWARD PECK Founding Principal, Edward Peck Design

Over more than 20 years in the design and construction industry, Peck has practiced as an architect, facade engineer, and served as the design director for a leading specialty facade contractor. His diverse experience with complex and progressive projects enables him to be an impactful collaborator. Peck received degrees in building science and architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and teaches architectural technologies and building skin systems at IIT. He is a member of the College of Fellows of the AIA and is a licensed architect registered with the National Council of Architects Registration Board (NCARB) and a LEED Accredited Professional.

Speakers BLAINE BROWNELL Professor and Interim Head, University of Minnesota

Brownell, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, is an architect and former Fulbright scholar to Japan with a focus on emergent materials and applications. In addition to his work at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture, he is principal of the design and research practice Transstudio. Brownell authored the four-volume Transmaterial series as well as Matter in the Floating World, Material Strategies, and Hypernatural (co-authored with Marc Swackhamer). A leading scholar on advanced materials for architecture and design, Brownell has been published in over 70 architecture, design, science, and news journals in addition to lecturing widely in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. His latest book is Transmaterial Next: A Catalog of Materials that Redefine Our Future.

MARK CHIU Senior Project Director, Thornton Tomasetti

Chiu, R.A., has over 10 years’ experience in exterior envelope detailing and engineering of facade systems. He has attained several years of experience as an NFRC–certified thermal simulator, and has in-depth knowledge on thermal performance of skin systems. Chiu has collaborated on several projects involving complex use of glass, from surface treatments such as bird-friendly glass to structural use of glass skins.

JUDY FRYDLAND Commissioner, Chicago Department of Buildings

Since Frydland’s appointment in 2015, the Building Department has implemented several reforms that have streamlined the permit process. Under her leadership, Chicago has adopted the first full rewrite of the building code in 70 years. Frydland previously served 25 years in the Chicago Law Department. She graduated from IIT Chicago Kent College of Law, was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1990, and is a current member of the Chicago Bar Association.

KARL HEITMAN Founder and President, Heitman Architects

Heitman brings 40 years’ experience and expertise in the design of corporate facilities including a diverse range of industrial manufacturing, corporate consolidation, and redevelopment projects. He has coupled his unique understanding of real estate value with emerging digital technologies to deliver sophisticated, high-performance buildings. His national reputation for innovation is based on sophisticated facility solutions incorporating Virtual 3D data modeling and sustainable “next generation” facility design for diverse clients across all sectors of the economy. He is an active member of the AIA, DFC; Design Futures Council, and USGBC.

ANTHONY HRUSOVSKY Development Project Manager, Sterling Bay

Hrusovsky manages Sterling Bay’s Fulton Market development pipeline, which has included planning, design, and construction of McDonald’s HQ, 333 N Green, 210 N Carpenter, Hyatt House, 345 N Morgan, and 1000 W Carroll. He also oversees Sterling Bay’s first outof-market, ground-up office development in Miami. Previously, Hrusovsky worked at Solomon Cordwell Buenz. He earned an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management and a MArch from the University of Michigan Taubman School of Architecture and Urban Planning. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI).

ALLOY KEMP Senior Project Engineer, Thornton Tomasetti

As a licensed architect and engineer, Kemp has extensive experience in the design and engineering of a myriad of facade typologies. Her main focus is engineering of special structures, tensile membranes, structural glass, long-span gridshells, and ETFE. At Thornton Tomasetti, Kemp has been integral to many projects with iconic facades, in various scales.

Speakers KATRIN KLINGENBERG Executive Director, Passive House Institute US

Klingenberg, Dipl.-Ing., M-Arch, CPHC®, is a licensed architect in Germany. She worked for Murphy/Jahn and SCB in Chicago. In 2003, she designed and completed the first home to meet passive house standards in the U.S. She has designed and consulted on numerous passive building projects across North America’s varied climate zones. In 2007 she co-founded the Passive House Institute US, shifting the focus of her work towards research and education.

ALFONSO LOPEZ Principal, Sentech Architectural Systems

For over 30 years, Lopez’s career has been characterized by a commitment to innovation in the areas of glass technology and structural engineering. His dedication to the development of creative design solutions using emerging technologies has positioned Sentech as a major player in the structural glass marketplace. Lopez is a registered PE, holds an MS in Mechanics and Structures from UCLA, and is a graduate of UCLA’s Executive Management Program.

JENNIFER PARK Principal/Owner, Brininstool + Lynch

Jennifer Park joined Brininstool + Lynch as Principal after previously founding the firm Jurassic Studio. Park has completed acclaimed projects through practices in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Chicago. Her design explorations query patterns, ornamentation and composition in contemporary architecture. Notable work includes museum design for the Obama Presidential Center, a parametrically generated facade for Gateway Plaza, an animated ceiling design for 35 East Wacker, offices for Cushman & Wakefield, and a showroom for Artemide.

MARK SEXTON Founding Partner, Krueck + Sexton

A Fellow of the AIA, Sexton is dedicated to guiding the future practitioners of architecture. He is a frequent design juror and lecturer, invited to share his love of architecture to peers, collaborators, business professionals, and students. Chicagoan of the Year in 2005, Sexton and the firm have received more than 70 awards over the past four decades.

KURT WENZEL Architectural Sales Representative, YKK AP America

Wenzel is an Architectural Sales Representative for YKK AP America covering Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. He has over 20 years of experience in the glass/glazing industry helping architects, general contractors and glazing contractors solve fenestration challenges.

SASHA ZELJIC Principal, Gensler

With over 20 years’ experience on complex, high-profile projects, including Shanghai Tower, Manila’s Finance Centre Tower and the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab in Chicago, Zeljic, AIA NCARB LEED AP, also leads Commercial Office Buildings Practice for the North Central Region. Most recent work includes projects in Chicago’s West Loop. In addition to contributions with such organizations as UN-Habitat and the International Council for Caring Communities (ICCC), Zeljic also served as the Chicago chapter chair of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Young Professionals Committee and has authored numerous white papers and presented at CTBUH conferences worldwide. He holds a BArch and MArch from the University of Belgrade, Serbia, and a MArch from the University of Illinois–Chicago.

His expertise includes exterior wall evaluation and restorations for buildings ranging from churches to high-rise offices. He also has extensive experience with all typical facade systems, including masonry, stone, concrete, EIFS, and metal and glass curtain walls.

ANTHONY CINNAMON Associate Principal, WJE

Cinnamon’s expertise lies in the inspection and investigation of building facades, exterior wall systems, and fenestration systems. Projects include: curtain wall systems, wood and aluminum window systems, and building facade cladding systems. Building types include high-rise residential and office buildings, institutions, sports arenas, and historic structures. Cinnamon has written numerous articles on the inspection, repair and restoration, and replacement of window and facade systems. He has also presented seminars domestically and internationally on fenestration-related topics including: typical window problems, glass and glazing failures, and testing and repair of window and curtain wall systems.

JOSHUA FREEDLAND Principal, WJE

Freedland has extensive experience with materials conservation of historic buildings. His work has included materials analysis, building documentation, facade investigations, preservation recommendations, and construction observations. Freedland has provided preservation recommendations for hundreds of buildings, monuments, and sculptures, including many listed on the National Register of Historic Places and local registers. Multiple local and national organizations have recognized his preservation work for excellence. He has published and presented extensively on materials and site conservation, including laboratory studies on desalination efficiency, stone consolidants, and masonry cleaning and preservation.

EDWARD A. GERNS Principal, WJE

Gerns is a project manager and project architect/engineer experienced in the investigation and repair of deteriorated conditions in existing buildings. He performs evaluations of brick, terra cotta, and stone masonry, assesses causes of collapse or distress in existing

MARK VAN DALEN Business Development Manager, UL

Applying over 30 years’ experience in consulting and testing in Eastern North America, Van Dalen works with building owners and managers to avoid or eliminate problems over the service life of their built environment assets. He has completed hundreds of investigations of envelope failures and has commissioned new envelope construction on such landmark buildings as the National Gallery of Canada and the Bank of Canada Headquarters. Van Dalen holds a Master’s in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

SARAH K. VAN DOMELEN Senior Associate, WJE

Van Domelen has worked on a variety of projects involving historic and contemporary buildings and completed numerous field investigations, including: facade inspections, condition surveys, water leakage testing, and structural investigations. She has also made repair recommendations and developed restoration details for various types of construction, including: steel, reinforced concrete, and masonry structures. She has extensive experience with historic building components including: brick, stone, and terra cotta masonry; wood and metal windows and curtain walls; and slate, sheet metal, and built-up roofing systems.
