Conference Co-Chairs LAUREN CADIEUX Associate, 5G Studio Collaborative

An artist and architect, Cadieux, AIA, has been practicing for nine years in Dallas and internationally. Her design practice bridges the scale of aviation, hospitality, and interactive art installations. The thread tying these together is a focus on the human experience—combining culture and tradition with the understanding and manipulation of physiological and emotional experience in space and time. Cadieux enjoys working with clients, consultants, and artists to explore scale, color, light, form, and intersections of material properties in and out of the tradition of architecture.

MICHAEL FRIEBELE Associate, CallisonRTKL

Friebele’s work focuses on connective fabric of context and culture, a means of of informing design work at a wide range of scale. His work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the 2017 Associate Award from the AIA and the 2016 Associate of the Year from AIA Dallas. In addition to his design work, he is a contributor to The Architect’s Newspaper and Texas Architect and currently serves as an adjunct faculty member within the Masters of Arts in Design and Innovation (MADI) program at Southern Methodist University.

JOSH ALLEN

Principal, 5G Studio Collaborative Allen has been responsible for the design of several award-winning projects, including: the Legacy ER in Allen, the 1217 Main Street adaptive reuse, and the Virgin Hotels Dallas. His work has been widely published in leading architectural and interior design journals and received honors at local, state, and national chapters of the American Institute of Architects and International Interior Design Association.

KATE AOKI

Associate, DSGN Associates Aoki’s project experience at DSGN Associates ranges from retail to multi-family to cultural. Her work with community-based projects allows her to explore the intersections between the design process and community needs. With degrees in both textile design and architecture, Aoki is highly focused on how the smallest details in design can have the greatest impact on those who will inhabit built spaces. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Dallas Architecture Forum, where she has been building a new outreach initiative for young professionals and those outside of the architecture profession.

Founder & Principal, Buchanan Architecture

Buchanan’s work represents a wide range of project types including: institutional, cultural, municipal, adaptive reuse, multi-family, historic preservation, commercial, mixed-use, and residential. In addition to practicing architecture, Buchanan designs furniture, creates artworks, and teaches as an adjunct professor at The University of Texas at Arlington. He is a founding member of the Dallas Architecture Forum and served on its Board of Directors. In 2014, Buchanan was elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.

DIANE CHEATHAM President, Urban Edge Developers

A developer and constructor of innovative, sustainable infill projects throughout Dallas, Cheatham was among the first to aggressively build upscale, modern infill projects in the 1980s in Uptown. Her Urban Reserve development is recognized by the AIA, ASLA, NCTCOG, and others as a paradigm of sustainable, innovative, single-family development. Cheatham is currently developing Urban Commons, a mixed-income, sustainable, single-family neighborhood in north

ADAM JONES

Associate Principal, L.A. Fuess Partners

Dewailly has over 10 years’ experience in the design of high-rise buildings, healthcare facilities, hospitality, and mixed-use developments. Dewailly is a licensed engineer in the state of Texas and received a Master’s in Structural Engineering from Texas A&M University as well as a Master’s in Civil Engineering from ESTP, Paris, France.

MICHELLE ESTES

Regional Architectural Manager, Vitro Architectural Glass Estes markets Vitro Glass products to architects and glazing contractors in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio and helps manage the glass selection process. Previously an architectural sales representative for Masco Coatings Group, she spent 19 years at PPG Paints as the South Central Texas Architectural Representative.

KOURTNY GARRETT President & CEO, Downtown Dallas

Appointed President and CEO of Downtown Dallas, Inc., in January 2017, Garrett has held various roles with the organization since 2002. In 2010, she joined the Board of Directors of the International Downtown Association (IDA), an organization representing urban centers across the globe, where she serves as a member of IDA’s National Legislative Task Force and the IDA Top Issues Council. She is also a German Marshall Fellow, and serves on the Board of Directors for The Arts Community Alliance, the Dallas Regional Chamber, McKinney Avenue Transit Authority, Dallas Heritage Village, and Children’s Medical Center.

BRYAN HEAKE

Associate / Sr. Consultant, CDC Heake has managed the Forensic and Field Services at CDC for the past 10 years. With over 35 years in the curtain wall industry, he has extensive experience with historic curtain wall systems as well as masonry facade components. His team at CDC has consulted on several revitalization projects in the Dallas area, including: The Continental Building; 1401 Elm St. (The Drever); The Davis Building; and The Statler Hilton.

MARK HOLSINGER

Design Leader, Senior Associate, Omniplan Holsinger is an experienced planner, programmer, and designer who excels at understanding the design vision and translating that through visualization

Principal, Merriman Anderson Architects Jones has led many large-scale projects including: the Hilton Anatole renovation in Dallas, the historic Petroleum Building hotel conversion in Houston, and the Naval Station Great Lakes campus improvements in Illinois. Jones also served as project architect for many mixed-use historic adaptive re-use and restoration projects, contributing to the revitalization of Downtown Dallas. These projects include: Lone Star Gas Lofts, LTV Tower, Old Dallas Central Library, and the Statler.

BART SHAW

Cofounder & Principal, Ibañez Shaw Shaw, AIA, practices in Fort Worth, Texas. His work has been distinguished with 27 design recognitions from National AIA, AIA Fort Worth, Texas Society of Architects, and IIDA. Shaw is a Contributing Editor to Texas Architect Magazine , and his work has been published in The Architect’s Newspaper, Faith and Form , Texas Architect , and Interiors Magazine .

DAN SHIPLEY

Principal & Founder, FAIA, Shipley Architects After arriving in Dallas in 1980, Shipley worked for Thomas & Booziotis Architects and HKS before founding Shipley Architects. The five-person firm works on a wide range of project types including: residential, commercial, public, and educational. The firm is also engaged in selected design-build projects. Shipley Architects strives to make memorable and compelling places by understanding the unique constraints of every project. A native Texan, Shipley graduated from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture in 1979.

JEFFERY SMITH

Executive Director of Project Development, Harwood International With over 30 years’ experience in the architecture field, Smith has overseen the design and documentation of diverse projects, from restaurants to high rises. Smith joined Harwood in 2015 and there oversees a team of architects, designers, and construction management professionals for various large-scale projects, including: the 33-story Bleu Ciel condominium, the 22-story office tower Harwood No. 10, and Kengo Kuma– designed Phase VII build-to-suit HQ for Rolex. He has a BArch from the University of Cincinnati.

Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.

MICHAEL ONDRUS Eastman

As Architectural Market Manager, Advanced Interlayers for Laminated Glass in the Americas, Ondrus works with architects, specifiers, engineers, consultants, and designers as well as laminating customers, providing advanced yet practical interlayer solutions for laminated glass that meet project-specific performance and aesthetic needs for exterior and interior applications. He has over 25 years’ glass industry marketing and technical experience at the float glass, interlayer, specialty fabricator, and processing levels.

JEFFERY GLICK Halio North America

Glick speaks regularly on how technologies that optimize daylighting are gaining importance in commercial architecture. Glick is currently charged with building and leading Halio North America’s sales team. The company is a joint venture between Kinestral Technologies, Inc., developer and manufacturer of Halio smart-tinting glass, and AGC, Inc., the world’s largest glass manufacturer.
