SAN FRANCISCO CHAIR JOHN KUCHEN | SOM | ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR With 10 years experience, Kuchen has worked on a range of project types, including government facilities, high rise office and residential towers, and automotive research, development and design facilities, domestically and internationally. He oversees the work of the architectural staff to achieve consistent and thorough development of architectural systems and their integration with engineering systems. Kuchen has played a significant role in SOM’s civic projects in China, including the US Embassy in Beijing and the US Consulate General in Guangzhou. He is also responsible for documenting the LEED accreditation of SOM projects and communicating with the USGBC.
SPEAKERS WILLIAM BURKE | PG&E PACIFIC ENERGY CENTER | ENERGY CENTER TECHNICAL SPECIALIST/ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM COORDINATOR Burke is an architect with a background in energy-efficient building design and environmental issues related to buildings. At the PG&E PEC, he oversees architectural educational programs, with a focus on building enclosure, daylighting, Title 24 Energy Standards, and zero net energy. He promotes high performance building enclosure design with the goal of promoting comfort while significantly reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Burke provides building professionals with information to assist them in complying with California’s stringent building energy standards.
OLIVIER BROUARD | SOM | ASSOCIATE/SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING SPECIALIST Brouard supports the High Performance Design group and the Sustainable Engineering Studio in delivering and documenting high performance design strategies. He performs detailed simulation analyses for evaluating advanced building systems and technologies that inform architectural design decisions. Brouard coordinates firmwide initiatives with other SOM HPD leaders, notably the AIA 2030 Commitment, through the creation of a Data Mining process and exploration tools to improve productivity and streamline reporting by evaluating a project’s energy use and tracking its energy savings.
ANNE FOUGERON | FOUGERON ARCHITECTURE | CEO Fougeron has provided architectural services in the Bay Area for over 25 years. Her firm’s breadth of work ranges from feasibility studies to building rehabilitation to new construction projects in the institutional, commercial, health-care and residential sectors. She is personally involved in all aspects of a project, from inception to completion, serving as the main client point-of-contact. As a result, her projects have been recipients of 50 design awards both local and national and have been featured in national and international publications.
JASON KELLY JOHNSON | FUTURE CITIES LAB / CCA | CO-FOUNDER + DESIGN PARTNER Johnson and his partner, Nataly Gattegno, produce a range of award-winning projects exploring the intersections of public space, art, and architecture with advanced fabrication technologies, robotics, and responsive building systems. The studio explores how advanced technologies, social media, and the Internet of Things will profoundly affect how we live, work, communicate, and play in the future. They employ an adventurous team of designers, architects, technologists, and digital craftspeople. Johnson is a tenured Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts and co-directs their Digital Craft Lab.
CLARK MANUS | HELLER MANUS | CEO Manus is the former President of The American Institute of Architects where he led initiatives on healthy, sustainable, and resilient communities. Manus’ 35-year career has influenced the character of San Francisco’s built environment and is a vocal activist for the community’s design and advocacy issues affecting policies and planning that reinforce the urban fabric. He currently serves as a planning commissioner for the city of Oakland. His experience encompasses a wide range of new and reconstruction projects including those in the SF Bay Area and China.
CYNTHIA PARKER | BRIDGE HOUSING | PRESIDENT/CEO Parker is responsible for the overall direction of BRIDGE Housing, a leading nonprofit developer, owner and manager of affordable housing. She joined BRIDGE in February 2010, bringing over 30 years of diverse and relevant experience to the organization. Parker established the Housing Office of the City of Seattle and served as the City’s Director of Housing under two separate mayors, with responsibility for the City’s housing investment strategies, $100 million annual capital budget and $824 million loan portfolio. She has developed approximately 10,000 units of housing to date, including more than 3,500 units in Oregon and Alaska with mixed financing.
COLIN SHANE | RDH BUILDING SCIENCE | ASSOCIATE/SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER Shane has a passion for developing practical solutions to make better, more durable, and more efficient buildings. His experience includes design of all components of the building enclosure, including walls, glazing systems, balconies, and roofs. He provides building enclosure consulting on both new construction and rehabilitation projects across Canada and the United States. His work also includes forensic investigations, hygrothermal analysis, and structural design for of primary and secondary structural components.
SANJEEV TANKHA | WALTER P MOORE | PRINCIPAL / DIRECTOR OF FACADE ENGINEERING Tankha is a specialist in integrated facade design and in the implementation of innovative ideas that bring value to projects by developing cost effective solutions that balance structure, aesthetics, sustainability and occupant comfort. Tankha has experience in a wide variety of projects including aviation, sports, civic, cultural, commercial, transportation, and hospitality.
COLIN TOUHEY | PVILION | CEO/FOUNDER Pvilion is a solar technology development firm in NYC that started in 2011 integrating solar cells and fabrics and manufacturing tents that produce electricity. Combining aesthetics and functionality, Pvilion specializes in the design and sales of flexible PV structures. Touhey’s experience in design, engineering, production, and sales, helps the Pvilion team integrate all of the elements of a complex business. He is also currently teaching at the Columbia University GSAPP, and is the founder of Foray, a medical device design business.
IVAN ZUNIGA | YKK-AP AMERICA | ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES MANAGER Zuniga is responsible for the sales and marketing of YKK Architectural Products in North America. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Virginia Tech and is a professional engineer. Zuniga is an active member of the Construction Specifications Institute, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, and the Glass Association of North America, and has served on several committees and task groups to promote energy efficiency and code development. A native of Venezuela, Zuniga resides with his wife and two children in Atlanta, GA.
