SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS TOM CHUNG Principal | Leers Weinzapfel Associates Chung’s projects include: the John W. Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst; Adohi Hall at the University of Arkansas; and the Center for Engineering, Innovation and Science at Wentworth. A national leader in mass timber design in both practice and education, Chung has worked closely with researchers and structural engineers to gain mastery over this technology. His designs are pioneering works of mass timber architecture in the country. Over the past five years, he has been invited to speak on this emerging subject at conferences and seminars worldwide. Chung is adjunct faculty at Auburn University and Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he teaches in-classroom and in-thefield design studios focusing on mass timber.
LELAND DADSON Senior Architect | MJMA Dadson is MJMA’s in-house Mass Timber and Passive House Design Specialist. Dadson has an expertise in the design and specifications of mass wood products in alignment with current code and standards of practice, and is involved in developing alternative solutions for work beyond current building code limits. Currently Project Architect and Tall Wood Specialist on the University of Toronto’s Academic Wood Tower, a 14-story tower that, once built, will be the tallest mass wood structure in North America.
LUCAS EPP Engineering + 3D Manager | StructureCraft Epp is a structural engineer with over 15 years’ experience working in North America, the U.K., and New Zealand. His expertise with complex geometry and Grasshopper/Rhino has led him to be involved in projects where synergy between architecture and structure drives the design. Epp speaks and writes widely on computational design, timber engineering, and mass timber construction, and has lectured at the Architectural Association in London, ETH Zurich, Imperial College, and the University of British Columbia. He participates in several code committees, is an author of the Nail Laminated Timber Design Guide, and is involved in writing a new Mass Timber Floor Vibration Design Guide.

regarded as an industry leader in advanced wood design and manufacturing. Under his guidance, Spearhead has helped re-think the construction process through the application of integrated project delivery practices, coupled with state-of-the-art digital fabrication.
ROBERT JACKSON Associate | Fast + Epp A structural engineer, Jackson offers a unique skill set due to his hands-on experience as a carpenter and fine woodworker. He is a designer with expertise in timber, steel, and concrete in both Canada and the U.S. Jackson has developed a particular specialization in mass timber design, contributing to the success of many of Fast + Epp’s most innovative timber projects across North America. He is the author of several articles in international engineering and design journals relating to timber’s role in sustainable design. He is also the recent recipient of two awards from the United Kingdom’s Institution of Structural Engineers.
ANNE KOVEN Director | Mass Timber Institute Koven has spent decades working in government and business, primarily in the areas of environmental and resource management. She was appointed to the Ontario Provincial Forest Policy Committee in 2008, was a trustee and secretary treasurer of the Trees Ontario Foundation, and represented the Foundation on the Natural Spaces Leadership Alliance. She served as President and Executive Director of the Ontario Forestry Association. Koven is an professor at the University of Toronto’s Graduate Department of Forestry, and assisted the Faculty in obtaining accreditation of the Master of Forest Conservation program by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board in 2014.
PETER MACKEITH Dean | Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas MacKeith is dean of the school and a nationally recognized design educator and administrator. The recipient of numerous research and exhibition grants and a prolific author and editor, MacKeith also has served as editor of Perspecta, the Yale Architecture Journal and The SOM Journal. Other roles include: chair of the advisory committee for the Northwest Arkansas Design Excellence Program; member of the editorial board of Places Journal for architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism; and Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Campus Architecture and Design at Arkansas. He is currently overseeing the completion of a capital campaign for the Fay Jones
SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS School, and guiding the design and construction of the Anthony Timberlands Center for Design and Materials Innovation.
ROSHANAK MOSTAGHIM Senior Designer | SOM Mostaghim has worked on projects across a broad range of building typologies in the U.S. and overseas. Most recently, Mostaghim worked on Building 4 at Row DTLA in Los Angeles, an adaptive reuse of a former manufacturing building, redesigned to provide collaborative office space. Mostaghim’s projects have been honored for design excellence by the American Institute of Architects. Roshanak is originally from Iran.
ZARMINE NIGOHOS Senior Architect | SOM Nigohos is a technical design expert with a focus on project delivery, constructability, and optimizing building materials. She is seasoned in working with interdisciplinary, integrated teams on design-build and P3 projects, and recently worked on the Billie Jean King Main Library, the first heavy timber building in Long Beach, Calif. Nigohos’s projects have been honored for design excellence by the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Steel Construction.
CAROL PHILLIPS Partner | Moriyama & Teshima Architects Phillips developed her design leadership over 20 years working in Canada and abroad. She was named Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2014. Recently completed work includes: Ottawa’s Parliament Hill Visitor Welcome Centre, The Ryerson Centre for Urban Innovation, and the UBC Okanagan “Commons.” She is currently Partner in Charge of two significant mass-timber buildings including the George Brown College “The Arbour” Tall Wood Building (in collaboration with Acton Ostry Architects), commissioned through an international design competition.
ASHLEY RAO Senior Associate | Leers Weinzapfel Associates Rao was the project manager for Adohi Hall at the University of Arkansas, completed in 2019 and currently the largest mass timber building in the U.S. An active member of the Boston Sustainable Design Leaders peer network, Rao leads the LWA “Green Monsters”
sustainability working group. She speaks nationally at seminars and webinars about mass timber design, highlighting the design opportunities, technical challenges, and carbon sequestration potential of building big with wood.
SIMON RAYMENT Associate | Blackwell Structural Engineers As an associate at Blackwell and in his previous position working internationally for Silvester Clark in New Zealand, Rayment has designed and engineered a multitude of projects including several multi-story structures with wood-based lateral systems. He is a licensed professional engineer in the province of Ontario and LEED AP certified.
THOMAS ROBINSON Founding Principal | Lever Architecture Nationally recognized for material innovation and pioneering work with mass timber construction, LEVER Architecture designed, among its myriad projects, Albina Yard, the first building in the U.S. made from domestically fabricated Cross-Laminated Timber. Lever’s research and testing for the Framework Project led to the first successful permitting of a wood highrise in the U.S. Current mass timber projects include a major expansion of Adidas’ North American HQ. Robinson has lectured throughout the U.S. and Europe, and in 2018 served as the USDA Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant Visiting Professor at the University of Arkansas’ Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design..
ERIC WOOD Facade Specialist/ Mass Timber Practice Lead | Morrison Hershfield Wood has a comprehensive understanding of performance envelope systems and techniques related to mass timber structures. Having spent the past several years overseeing the commercialization of mass timber and unitized building components. He specializes in the prefabrication of mass timber to facilitate the early design and detail development rationale, and is skilled at optimizing fabrication supply and strategic constructability. He has particular experience with design-assist specialty engineering, supply-installation logistics, and infield review of complex mass timber projects.

She also served on the structural work group of the ICC Ad-Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings,which introduced increased height limits on mass timber buildings to the 2021 IBC.

Matthew is a fire safety and structural engineer,with a focus on providing performance-based design services for extreme building loads including realistic fire events. He is a regular author and presenter on the topics of fire engineering and structural resilience, and a member of several North American structural fire code committees. JARED HENSLEY | Rosboro
Jared has an extensive wood design and engineering background, having worked both as a consulting engineer and more recently as a product expert for the APA – The Engineered Wood Association. He has extensive knowledge of building codes and design standards for engineered wood products and is an excellent resource for timber framed design community. Aside from spending as much time as possible with his family, Jared likes to golf, listen to music and take his motorcycle out on the open road. He holds Professional Engineer licenses in multiple states and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming.
