ALLAN SHULMAN Principal, Shulman + Associates
Architect, author, editor, and curator, Shulman also serves as the Director of Graduate Programs in Architecture and as a professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture. Shulman’s research focuses on themes of modernism, tropicality, and urbanism. As an extension of this research, Shulman founded his award-winning practice Shulman + Associates in 1996 with a focus on the creation of relevant, site-specific designs.

Barnes is the Designer in Residence for the Opa Locka CDC and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture at the University of Miami. His has been published and exhibited in several international publications and institutions, including, The Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, The Swiss Institute, DesignMIAMI, and Curbed.com.
MELISSA BRILLHART Principal, Brillhart Architecture
Brillhart leads the practice’s daily operations while also working on project design and competitions, publishing, and marketing. Previously, she worked for urban design firm, Dover, Kohl & Partners, and served as a Development Manager for a local real estate development firm, overseeing design and construction of multi-family properties. Melissa earned her BA from the University of Virginia and her MArch from the University of Miami.
Crawford is President of Crawford-Tracey Corporation, the largest glazing manufacturer/contractor based in Florida. He holds a Florida general contractor’s license and a specialty glazing contractor’s license. His glazing expertise stems from decades of hands-on involvement in every aspect of the business, including estimating, design, fabrication, glazing, and erecting glazing systems. A sought-after resource, he actively offers his knowledge and design acumen to architects through workshops and symposiums.
JALAL FAROOQ Principal, Al Farooq Corporation
Farooq has served as a seismic engineering consultant for the nuclear power industry, including helping provide vulnerability assessment following the 2011 disaster at Fukushima. Currently, he works with Al-Farooq Corpo-

SPEAKERS ration’s team of engineers who specialize in engineering, product development, and product consultation for building envelopes and impact-resistant windows and doors. He received a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Florida International University and Master’s in Structural Engineering and Geomechanics from Stanford University.
JOSH GELFMAN Vice President, Development, Terranova Corporation
Bringing over a decade of urban planning and development experience, Gelfman has been responsible for developing the firm’s two new buildings forming the main thoroughfare to Lincoln Road along Meridian Avenue and North Lincoln Lane. Previously, he was Deputy Director of the Regulatory and Economic Resources Department of Miami-Dade County and prior to that, Senior Vice President at the NYC Economic Development Corporation. He has a Master’s in City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a MBA in real estate and finance from Columbia University.
NICK GELPI Principal, Gelpi Projects
Gelpi’s firm dedicates itself to examining the relationships between material representations and building concepts. Previously, he worked at Steven Holl Architects and taught at MIT and Ohio State University; he currently teaches at Florida International University, Miami. The practice recently won two AIA Miami Design awards for built projects, and in 2014, Gelpi received a CURBED, YOUNG GUNS award naming him one of the Top 10 Young Designers in America.
ALEJANDRO GONZALEZ Principal, Arquitectonica
Alejandro Gonzalez, AIA, LEED AP, is a Principal of Arquitectonica, and a lead designer and planner. With projects in over 20 countries, Gonzalez has designed a wide range of building types including mixed-use, residential, hospitality, corporate headquarters, retail/entertainment centers, museums, performing arts centers, convention centers, sports facilities, educational facilities, and cruise-ship terminals. Recent projects in Miami include Brickell City Centre and the facade of the redeveloped Miami Beach Convention Center.
FRANCO MICUCCI Founder, ma+
Born in Venezuela, Micucci is an architect and urban designer. He has received awards in various competitions including the IX Bienal de Arquitectura de Venezuela and X Bienal de Arquitectura, Caracas. He is a professor at the Universidad Simón Bolívar and the Universidad Metropolitana. Micucci earned his Bachelor’s from the Universidad Simón Bolívar, Caracas, and Masters in Urban Design from Harvard University.
LIVIA TANI Partner, Ateliers Jean Nouvel
With AJN, Tani has managed several projects in the past decade including the “Kilometro Rosso,” a scientific and technological park in Bergamo; the Minimetro’ in Perugia, an urban transport system with automated cars and eight stations; the new trade fair Pavilion for the Fiera di Genova; the Ferrari assembly line, Maranello; and the reconversion of the Cinema Excelsior, Milan. Current projects include the Alda Fendi Foundation, Rome, and Monad Terrace, Miami.

Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.
Perez, CGC, LEED AP, handles sales, marketing, and design-assist efforts within the Florida market. An Architect and Construction Project Manager with over 18 years’ experience in the private and public sectors, he has a diverse background in design, construction and technology. Perez engages in contract negotiation, project estimating, troubleshooting design problems, document preparation, building codes/regulations, and site logistics.

He has also been involved in several design-assist collaborations on large public and private projects such as universities, stadiums, museums, commercial offices, and arena projects.
