Principal | Facade Design Director, Studio NYL As both architect and engineer, Babbington has designed, realized, written, and presented on awardwinning and high-performance enclosures around the country and world. He is also an active member in numerous professional organizations, including: the American Institute of Architects, an AIA National representative on ASHRAE’s 90.1 envelope subcommittee, Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council, and ASTM, where he is a voting member on the E06 Performance of Buildings Committee. Babbington is also the National Vice Chair of the Building Enclosure Council (BEC).
JOE SIMMA
Senior Associate, Alliiance Simma has focused his career on technical design excellence for complex public, higher education, and aviation projects, relishing the challenge of integrating disciplines, systems, and concepts to bring clarity to complexity. With 15 years’ wide-ranging project experience, he has developed an expertise for high-performance envelope design and creatively solving constructability issues. Within the firm, Simma oversees envelope design and quality reviews, promotes analytical tools for building performance, and helps guide the firm’s digital direction and BIM efforts. He received his MArch from Columbia University.
Speakers JUSTIN BARTON Project Manager, Walter P Moore
Prior to his present position at Walter P Moore, Barton was the project manager for Minnesota United FC’s Allianz Field. He has also designed Orlando City Soccer Stadium, Houston Dynamo’s BBVA Compass Stadium, Minnesota Twin’s Target Field, Atlanta Braves’ Suntrust Park, and Las Vegas’ McCarron International Airport Terminal 3. He holds an M.S. and B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. He is a firm believer that integrating structural design, facade engineering, and architecture can produce world-class results. His passion for creating buildings that improve the quality of life for the end users, as well as the community that the project serves, comes through in all he does.
SARAH BERSETH
Mechanical Engineer, Office Director, HGA A mechanical engineer at HGA, Berseth directs mechanical infrastructure and energy systems for corporate offices, historic renovations, and office tenant improvements. She specializes in energy modeling and sustainability in coordination with the firm’s architecture and engineering teams to develop high-performance buildings and facades that contribute to occupant well-being. Among her notable Twin Cities projects are: the Ramsey County Library Shoreview, State of Minnesota Capitol Renovation, and B.H. Whipple Federal Office Building Modernization. She also serves as Minneapolis Office Director, overseeing daily administrative and operational functions of the 240-person office. Berseth has a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

CHARLES CARVER Project Office Leader, Permasteelisa
Carver oversees all functional and organizational duties of the Project Management West team, which includes: project/resource allocation and establishing policies and procedures. Since joining the Permasteelisa Team, Carver has gained significant experience in structural calculations, thermal calculations, general contractor/architect/owner relationships, project logistics, and organizational leadership. In addition to his operational strengths, he has performed various engineering/design roles including: structural analysis, thermal analysis, equipment design, anchor layout, site logistics, and material buyouts. He graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.
KEVIN COLE
Director of Engineering and Design, Harmon Cole is an engineering professional with a 36year track record in the design, engineering, fabrication, assembly, and installation of custom curtain wall systems for high-rise buildings. He is currently directing a multi-talented staff of professionals in preconstruction efforts, including: design, proposal drawings, specification review, design criteria, structural design, thermal analysis, 3D modeling and printing, manufacturing, and installation means and methods. Cole and his team of design managers provide technical and process expertise to design assist projects, and guide the owner, architect, contractor, and consultant towards the approval of a system that meets the needs of the entire design team.
Speakers PETER CRANDALL Senior City Planner, City of Minneapolis
An architect by training, Crandall’s project experience includes: design review and entitlements for numerous mixed-use infill development projects in Minneapolis, as well as regulatory reform for design-related policy, including helping to implement Minneapolis’s first accessory dwelling unit ordinance. In addition to his professional practice, Crandall serves on the board of the Minnesota chapter of Docomomo US, a non-profit organization that works to document and conserve buildings and landscapes of the modern movement.
STÉPHANE HOFFMAN
Vice President & Senior Building Science Specialist, Morrison Hershfield Since joining the firm in 1994, Hoffman has worked on projects throughout North America and led the expansion of Morrison Hershfield’s Building Science practice in the U.S. He now leads the Facade Engineering Group, focusing on conceptual design of cladding and glazing systems. The breadth of his knowledge and experience is often called upon to troubleshoot and help resolve issues on both new and existing buildings. With a Master’s in historic restoration that combines structural engineering, building science, and architecture, he brings a well-balanced consulting approach to the conservation of the building envelope, blending scientific analysis with an understanding of aesthetic considerations.
PHIL KOLBO
Associate Principal, Populous An experienced senior architect technician with an extensive knowledge of stadium, arena, and convention center design, Kolbo’s passion is creating buildings that push the envelope in both design and technology. He leads the parametric modeling and computational design group for Populous’ North America region as a Populous Intelligence Ambassador, creating and streamlining BIM tools unique to sports and convention center design. While at Populous, Kolbo has worked on: the MasterCard Center for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the New Arrowhead Stadium, Oklahoma City Convention Center, DC United Stadium, and led the design for the San Antonio Convention Center, Orlando City Lions Stadium, and Minnesota United Stadium. At Iowa State University, he graduated second in his class and with LEED certification.
ANDREA LOVE
Principal, Director of Building Science, Payette Love works across all projects to improve building performance. She was the Principal Investigator for the AIA Upjohn Grant on thermal bridging, and is a lecturer at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning. Love is a licensed architect with a BArch from Carnegie Mellon, a Master’s degree in Building Technology from MIT, and a recipient of the Tucker-Voss Award. She is a member of the COTE Advisory Group, and chairs the 2030 Working Group.
MIKE P. MCGRATH President of Operations, MG McGrath
Crediting his father as his mentor, McGrath began his career with MG McGrath sweeping warehouse floors. He eventually grew with the family business as an apprentice, a journeyman, a foreman, and then a project manager, before assuming responsibilities as President of Operations and the company’s visionary. Presently, McGrath is responsible for all aspects of the business. With over 20 years’ hands-on experience and a deft understanding of architectural metal, glass and glazing, building-envelope design, and high-volume operations, he is a transformational leader. McGrath works closely with architects, contractors, and clients, on projects from New York to Los Angeles and in-between, armed with the company’s belief that with great people you will get amazing results.
BRIAN ROGERS
Technical Project Manager, Enclos As a key member of the engineering department, Rogers implements new 3D technology throughout Enclos’ manufacturing, quality control, and field layout processes. Notable projects include: VIA (625 W 57th Street), Hudson Yards Tower A, Chase Center Arena, and the Las Vegas Stadium. His passion for architecture and design originated at the Savannah College of Art and Design where he earned his MArch.
NATE WEINGART Project Engineer, Mortenson GC
Weingart began his career with Mortenson Construction on the US Bank Stadium team that managed the structural steel scope of work. After that, he worked for a short time on the Athlete’s Village project at the University of Minnesota before being assigned to Allianz Field. On this project, he managed the construction of the structural steel, precast concrete, the aluminum bleacher supporters section, and the PTFE facade. Weingart attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc., with a B.A. in Construction Engineering and Management.
TOM WUERCH
Executive Vice President, Pfeifer-FabriTec At Pfeifer-FabriTec, Wuerch is integrally involved in: tactical and strategic development of both domestic and global business planning, building strategic alliances with industry leaders, and development and pursuit of iconic projects worldwide. He has worked in the construction industry since 1989, focusing on project development and management of high-profile domestic and international construction projects including 19 years’ experience in the lightweight structures industry. Previous positions with notable companies include: Pyramid Development Co. (Project Manager), Benderson Development Co. (Director of Construction & Hotel Development), Birdair Inc. (Senior Vice President and Director of Project Management), and FabriTec Structures LLC (Executive Vice President).

ERIC LACROIX STI Firestop
Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.
KARA BALDEV Sherwin-Williams
After completing her degree in architecture, Baldev found a niche in the building materials industry. For the past 15 years she has worked with several large multi-national companies and has been in the coatings industry for the past six years. Baldev works with both extrusion and metal panel product manufacturers to specify coating systems for interior and exterior projects.
MARK SWANSON
International Masonry Institute Swanson, AIA, CSI, LEED AP BD+C, provides technical assistance, plan reviews, job site troubleshooting, and AIA continuing education seminars at IMI. He is part of a national BIM for Masonry workgroup that develops masonry software for designers. In addition, Swanson teaches a masonry workshop for the University of Minnesota College of Design’s School of Architecture and volunteers as a mentor with the ACE Mentor Program.
