WELCOME! A Message from the Facades+ Partners We are very excited to welcome you to our annual New York City Facades+ conference, symposium, and workshops. This year our theme is Performance. Facades+ Performance is our fourth event in an ongoing series of conferences that has spanned the nation with stops in San Francisco and Chicago as well as New York. With every iteration, Facades+ has become increasingly anticipated, better attended, and more engaging. There is good reason for this. Building facade technology and design practices are in the midst of a transformation that is bringing a profusion of new materials, processes, and design strategies to the realm of the building skin. One need only review the facade designs of five years ago in comparison to those on the boards and under construction today to observe this phenomenon. And the evolution of the field is accelerating, driven by the escalating performance and aesthetic demands on building envelope systems. The energy-intensive nature of buildings is now widely acknowledged, and broad-based performance enhancements are the only solution. We have no choice but to innovate our way to a sustainable built environment, and the facade is pivotal in this pursuit. Facades+ is a strategic response to these emerging conditions and how they impact the building skin; a response intended to facilitate a dialogue that spans the profession, the industry, and the academy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the attendee. We recognize that your participation here represents an expenditure of resources, time, and money. The AEC industry has long been deficient in investing in its future. Many of us are working to change that. This conference is intended to give voice to these efforts. We especially want to thank our sponsors, and hope that all of you will recognize and acknowledge the importance of your participation. SPEAKERS KEYNOTE SPEAKER CHRISTOPH INGENHOVEN | INGENHOVEN ARCHITECTS Christoph Ingenhoven studied architecture at RWTH Aachen. In 1985, Christoph founded the architectural studio of ingenhoven architects which has become one of the world’s leading architectural practices in sustainable design. The determining factor in their work is ecology; the well-being of the user, technical progress, a logical construction with a clean finish, as well as great sensitivity towards light and space. The use of regenerative energies and resources like geothermal energy and rainwater as well as intensive integration of daylight and natural ventilation of buildings all play important roles in ingenhoven’s design concepts. With a minimum consumption of energy and resources-, his projects aim for the highest utilization comfort. ingenhoven architects’ focus is mainly on office buildings, high-rises, company headquarters, department stores, industrial buildings, transportation projects, university and education buildings, as well as master planning. Among the bestknown projects are the RWE headquarters in Essen, the Burda Media Park in Offenburg, the Lufthansa Aviation Center in Frankfurt, the European Investment Bank Building in Luxembourg and the Uptown tower in Munich. The new main station Stuttgart was awarded the Global Holcim Award in Gold for sustainable design. The high-rise tower 1 Bligh is the first building in Sydney rated 6 Star Green Star and 5 Star NABERS Energy and received since its opening several awards as the CTBUH Best Tall Building Australasia and the International High Rise Award 2012/13. He is an appointed member of the NRW Academy of Science and Art.

PRESENTERS GIL AKOS | MODE COLLECTIVE Gil Akos is a founding partner of Mode Collective and adjunct faculty at the Pratt Institute. His professional work includes projects that range in scale from buildings to products and include significant contribution to the J&J Olympic Pavilion, the Water Planet exhibit in the San Francisco Academy of Arts, and the LARD Furniture Series. PETER ARBOUR, Conference Coordinator | SEELE, Inc. Peter Arbour is a facade designer with a Master of Architecture from Yale. He currently works in the New York office of the German facade builder Seele. Peter has worked for Israel Berger and Associates, Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners and RFR Consulting Engineers in Paris. Peter’s project works include 40 Bond Street, with Herzog de Meuron; the Times Square TKTS booth with Nick Leahy; the Tour Phare, Paris, with Morphosis; the Grand Museum of Egypt, with Heneghan Peng Architects; and the Broad Museum with Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Peter is the designer and patent holder of the Liquid Wall curtain wall system. ANN BEHA | ANN BEHA ARCHITECTS Marked by its cultural content and its integration of contemporary design in landmark settings, Ann Beha’s projects have been widely honored. A graduate of Wellesley College, Ann received a Master of Architecture Degree from MIT and was a Loeb Fellow at Harvard’s GSD. Her work explores changing human needs, contemporary design, technology, and sustainability in the larger context of building revitalization. Her Boston based firm has been a leader in the dialogue of cultural stewardship in tension with cutting edge design. DAVID BENJAMIN | COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY David Benjamin is Founding Principal at The Living and Director of the Living Architecture Lab at Columbia GSAPP. The practice and the lab explore new technologies and create prototypes of future architecture. Recently, The Living was selected for New Practices New York by AIA New York and exhibited work at the Venice Biennale.

TOM BIALK | GKD METAL FABRICS Tom Bialk is a designer and engineer at GKD-USA. With a degree in Architectural Engineering from Delaware Tech, he has over 20 years’ experience in the field of design, building, and engineering. Tom specializes in solar management applications and has led more than 25 GKD projects. He is currently pursuing his LEED Green Associate Accreditation. ELIZABETH BISHOP | ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS Elizabeth received her BArch degree at Tulane University and her Masters of Environmental Design degree from Yale. She joined the ZHA team in 2008 where she has developed 3D parametric models for design and fabrication as well as 2D drawing sets for competition phase through construction phase. She has worked on multiple projects including the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center where she led the design for the facades and LEED coordination. ALAN G. BRAKE | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER Alan G. Brake is the executive editor of The Architect’s Newspaper. He has written about architecture, design, and urbanism for Architecture, Architectural Record, Azure, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Metropolis, The New York Times and other publications. He studied architectural history and urbanism at Vassar College and Yale University, where he earned a Masters of Environmental Design. He is the recipient of a research grant from the Graham Foundation. CORY BRUGGER | MOPHOSIS ARCHITECTS Cory Brugger manages the development and implementation of advanced design technology for Morphosis Architects. He provides day-to-day oversight of BIM integration and CAD production for the office and its multidisciplinary project teams. For over ten years he has successfully managed the integration of CAD and BIM technologies on projects ranging from residential design-build to hi-rise office towers. At Morphosis, Mr. Brugger’s primary focus has been on the integration of virtual building models into design and delivery processes. SCOTT CRAWFORD | LMNts Scott Crawford leads LMNts, the R&D group within LMN Architects. His work focuses on the use of parametric modeling, digital fabrication, and simulation analysis. Scott holds an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, a Masters of Architecture and a Masters of Science in Design Computing from the University of Washington. DIANA DARLING, Conference Director | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER Diana is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper. The A|N media company, based in New York City, consists of three regional print publications covering architecture and design news in the East, West and Midwest, a web version, e-newsletters and resource guides. As A|N’s publisher, Diana has won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award from the Historic Districts Council, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. She is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, with a BS in Life Science. She is the co-creator and co-director of the facades+ conferences. ZACH DOWNEY* | NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, PARABOX Zach Downey, RA LEED AP BD+D, is an architect based in New York and teaches at the computation fabrication program at the New York City College of Technology, City University of New York (NYCCT). He co-founded Parabox, a technology company focusing on exploiting emerging technologies for the AEC industry. He has conducted workshops and lectures nationally on design technology and is also an adjunct professor at Columbia University. Prior to

John maintains an architectural firm in Woodbridge, Connecticut, specializing in residential and light commercial work. In addition, the firm operates a fabrication shop designing and fabricating building components as well as custom cabinetry. He is also a design collaborator for C Studio located in New Haven, designing large-scale office and residential buildings across Latin America. NIC GOLDSMITH | FTL DESIGN ENGINEERING STUDIO Nic Goldsmith, FAIA LEED AP, is a founder & Principal of FTL Design Engineering Studio since 1978. Prior, he was a designer for Frei Otto in Germany. He is a Fellow of the AIA and former Chair of the Lightweight Structures Association. Nic has been in charge of design for many of FTL’s projects, including the Carlos Moseley Music Pavilion for the Metropolitan Opera, a theater for AT&T at the ‘96 Olympics, and the Sun Valley Pavilion in Idaho 2008. Nic has designed exhibitions including “Under the Sun” an exhibition on solar energy for the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and he has been featured in innumerable publications including an Architectural Monograph titled: FTL: Softness, Movement & Light. CHUCK HOBERMAN | HOBERMAN ASSOCIATES/ADAPTIVE BUILDING INITIATIVE Nowhere do the disciplines of art, architecture, and engineering fuse as seamlessly as in the work of inventor Chuck Hoberman. He is the founder of Hoberman Associates, a multidisciplinary practice utilizing transformable principles for applications ranging from consumer products, deployable shelters to structures for aerospace. In 2008, Hoberman formed the Adaptive Building Initiative (ABI), with the global engineering firm, Buro Happold, to develop adaptive technologies for the built environment. ABI has since built a series of dynamic facades and operable roofs in the United States, Japan and the Mideast. CAMPBELL HYERS | CONTROL GROUP Campbell Hyers is Partner & CEO of Control Group. As CEO, Campbell is focused on building strategic partnerships and leading corporate development initiatives. His business insight, combined with a solid grounding in technology and passion for design, helps define the strategic vision for Control Group. Campbell also serves as Vice President of the Board for the Storefront for Art & Architecture, a nonprofit organization that is committed to the advancement of innovative positions in architecture, art, and design in New York City. He is also board chairman of Case, a building information modeling consultancy and development firm founded by the technology leaders from SHoP Architects. HAUKE JUNGJOHANN | KNIPPERS HELBIG Hauke Jungjohann is the director of Knippers Helbig’s New York office and is responsible for the design of complex structures and facades with a focus on parametric modeling, form finding and new materials. Mr. Jungjohann is a frequent guest critic at universities such as MIT, Columbia University and others. He studied structural engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig and at Georgia Tech as a Fulbright scholar as well as architecture at the ETH Zurich.

WILL LAUFS | LAUFS ENGINEERING DESIGN (LED) Will Laufs, PhD, PE LEED AP, IWE works in the field of structural, façade engineering and specialty structures design in the US and worldwide, focusing on the use of new materials, transparent glass enclosures, challenging international structures with complex geometries and architectural building elements, where 3Dstructural form- finding and detailing have an important influence on appearance and identity of spaces. He works in New York, having been educated in Germany. Will believes in the unity of architecture, sustainability and structural engineering, focusing towards one single integrated design approach, having been trained in both Structural Engineering and Architecture (www.laufsed.com). MIKE LEROY | DRYVIT SYSTEMS, INC. Employed by Dryvit Systems since 2005, Mike LeRoy previously spent four years working for Traco International, a window and glass curtain wall systems company. He has extensive knowledge and experience in the building envelope industry, is an active member of CSI, a certified EIFS professional, and is LEED GA accredited. BRIAN J. McFARLAND | CETRA/CRI Brian McFarland, AIA, Associate Principal, since 2004, has been the principal in charge of a diversity of projects ranging from the restoration of the Romanesque entrance to the Bowery Savings Bank building to 105 West 57th Street, a mixed-use development to be the slenderest tall building in New York City. JEREMY MOSS | SILVERSTEIN PROPERTIES Jeremy Moss is Senior Vice President, Leasing, at Silverstein Properties. Prior to joining Silverstein in 2008, Jeremy was a Vice President for Commercial Development and Leasing at Forest City Ratner Companies in New York City. In this capacity, Jeremy managed the leasing of Forest City’s 6.5 million square foot office portfolio. Over eight years at Forest City, Jeremy worked on 2 million square feet of commercial office leasing transactions and was involved in the development of 4 office towers totaling 2.7 million square feet, including the recently completed New York Times Building. Prior to joining Forest City, Jeremy was with GRP Capital where he was responsible for the asset management and disposition of Resolution Trust properties and other commercial assets on behalf of the firm’s institutional investors. Jeremy received his BA in economics and political science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1997. BEN NESBEITT | WORKSBUREAU A principal of Phoenix, AZ based WORKSBUREAU, Ben has been integral to the international expansion of the firm and its award-winning architecture, including innovative façade system designs that respond to extreme climate challenges. Each work is informed by cultural, programmatic, and sustainability objectives. Fusing envelope and interior environment with a sensitive response to context, this process is born of strong collaborations that lead to unexpected solutions. RONNIE PARSONS | MODE COLLECTIVE Ronnie Parsons is a founding partner of Mode Collective and adjunct faculty at the Pratt Institute. With over 10 years of experience in architecture, he has worked on a diverse set of projects ranging from furniture, products, interiors, and buildings. He has led design studios and research seminars at Pratt Institute, New York City College of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, and the University Of Minnesota College Of Design. MIC PATTERSON | ENCLOS Mic Patterson is a designer, researcher, educator, and entrepreneur whose work focuses on the building skin. He has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology and structural glass facades. Patterson participated in the establishment of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) where he works as the Director of Strategic Development. Enclos is a leading national specialty facade contractor, and ATS is

its dedicated facade think-tank with the mission of anticipating and realizing the future of the building skin. Patterson has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of façade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures. JONATAN SCHUMACHER | THORNTON TOMASETTI Jonatan Schumacher is responsible for research and strategic development related to integrated structural design, facade design and building information modeling. Having studied in the fields of product design, architecture, manufacturing, kinematics, engineering and computer science, his versatile expertise includes digital fabrication, parametric modeling, automatic and generative geometry creation based on performance parameters, computational analysis in the disciplines of fluid dynamics, environmental and structural performance and workflow integration through automation and custom interoperability. He has in-depth technical knowledge in various parametric modeling platforms, as well as data mining, problem modeling and knowledge exchange through the APIs (application programming interfaces) of REVIT, TEKLA, CATIA/Digital Project, Rhino/ GRASSHOPPER and Ecotect. Jonatan works closely with the structure, skin, sustainability, and performance groups at Thornton Tomasetti. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Product Design and Engineering from Middlesex University, and a Master’s degree in Architectural Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, where he also teaches. JASON SIDELKO | GEHRY TECHNOLOGIES Jason Sidelko has worked at Gehry Technologies for 5 years specializing in complex parametric design, rationalization, automation, and developing fabrication solutions. His project works include several projects for Gehry Partners, the façade of the Museo Soumaya, and the Edmonton International Airport façade. He earned his Masters of Architecture at the SCI-ARC. OLIVER STEPE | YKK AP Oliver is Senior Vice President of YKK AP America, the USA arm of the global producer of specialized facades systems, YKK AP. He is responsible for overall strategic direction in the USA where he has fostered a culture based on innovation and emerging technologies with a vision to add value to the built environment through advanced product development and exceptional business practice. A graduate of the State University of New York, he is a current member of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the Construction Specifications Institute since 1993 where he holds CDT certification. In August 2012, Oliver was listed as one of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry by US Glass Magazine. BRENDAN SULLIVAN | GEHRY TECHNOLOGIES Brendan Sullivan is a consultant at Gehry Technologies’ New York office where he collaborates with designers, fabricators, builders, and engineers to realize some of the world’s more complex architectural visions. A background in sculpture, photography, and architecture contribute to a wide variety of skills that currently are focused on parametric 3D modeling and analysis, and digital fabrication. Previous to Gehry Technologies he worked with Front Inc. on Barclay’s Arena in Brooklyn, NY. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the Rhode Island School of Design where he was a participant in the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. He holds a Master’s of Architecture from Columbia. JEFFREY VAGLIO, Conference Coordinator | ENCLOS Jeffrey Vaglio has experience in both structural engineering and architecture. He works as Associate Director of the Enclos Advanced Technology Studio (ATS) in Los Angeles, a collaborative think-tank that is devoted to investigating the future of façade engineering and project delivery strategies. He has participated in the design and engineering of numerous structural glass facades and skylights including cable net walls, point-supported glazing, grid shells

and double-skin facades. Jeffrey is currently a PhD Candidate in Architecture at the University of Southern California where he has also studied innovation theory and leadership extensively. JAY VALGORA | STUDIO V Since opening his own firm in 2006, Jay Valgora, AIA, AICP, LEED AP has focused on the expression of contemporary culture in the urban environment, with emphasis on innovative construction technologies and an unusually diverse range of work. STUDIO V has rapidly emerged as a highly-recognized, multi-disciplinary practice, with award-winning projects located across the globe. Jay holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard GSD as well as a Bachelor of Architecture from Cornell, and is a Fulbright Fellow. STEPHEN VAN DYCK | LMN ARCHITECTS Stephen Van Dyck is a Principal at LMN Architects in Seattle where he serves as project designer for large cultural and institutional projects. The 90-person firm, established in 1979, has designed and delivered a wide range of project types throughout the United States and beyond. Stephen leads the project implementation of LMN’s Tech Studio group, an integrated design technology lab at LMN Architects. He has served as a lecturer and studio critic at Yale. Prior to joining LMN Architects in 2009 Stephen was a project leader at SHoP Architects in New York. He earned his Master’s Degree in Architecture from Yale, is a LEED AP, and a Registered Architect in New York State. ERIK VERBOON | BURO HAPPOLD Erik Verboon is a technical designer and facade consultant for international consulting and engineering firm Buro Happold. Since 2007, he has been a professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Product Architecture Lab. He is also currently an adjunct faculty of architecture at Pratt Institute, serving as facade consultant to a thirdyear undergraduate comprehensive design studio. DAVID WARDEN | YKK AP David is the brand manager for YKK AP’s enerGfacade family of façade systems. A LEED® Green Associate and contributing author to articles on advanced building envelopes, David has extensive experience in thermal modeling of fenestration systems and as a sought after expert on the subject, travels throughout the USA speaking about the evolution energy codes and the role of façade systems. JONATHAN WILSON | ARUP FAÇADE ENGINEERING Jonathan is a Façade Engineer working in Arup’s London office. Before joining Arup he worked as a façade designer for Schmidlin AG, a world renowned specialist façade contractor. Jonathan has been involved in many complex and challenging projects during his career. Recent projects include the 2012 Sterling Prize award winning Sainsbury’s Laboratory by Stanton Williams Architects and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center with Zaha Hadid Architects. JEFFREY P. YACHMETZ | THOR EQUITIES Jeffrey Yachmetz is, Director of Development at Thor Equities, which he joined in January of 2010. As the Director of Development, Mr. Yachmetz’s responsibilities include: project implementation, technical design oversight, cost analysis, construction management and owner’s representation. Jeffrey has 12 years of direct real estate development, construction, design and project management experience. He is an experienced real estate development manager with specific skills in engineering and architectural design, contract negotiations, estimating, project scheduling, construction engineering and real estate finance. Prior to joining Thor, Jeffrey was involved with the $2 Billion Colony Capital, LLC / Meadowlands Xanadu mixed use development project located in the New Jersey Meadowlands Sports Complex. He holds a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s degree from Columbia. He is also a licensed professional engineer.
