A Message from the Facades+ Partners We are very excited to welcome you to our Facades+ Chicago conference, symposium, and workshops. Our 2013 theme is Performance, and we have a stellar lineup of speakers converging on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology, a most fitting venue for this exciting event.

Our 2013 conference series has been the best yet, with sold out venues in New York City in April and San Francisco in July.

The attendees span the AEC industry, with many façade luminaries among both speakers and audience. With every event, Facades+ has become increasingly anticipated, better attended, and more engaging. There is good reason for this. Building facade technology and design practices are in the midst of a transformation that is bringing a profusion of new materials, processes, and design strategies to the realm of the building skin.

One need only review the facade designs of five years ago in comparison to those on the boards and under construction today to observe this phenomenon. And the evolution of the field is accelerating, driven by the escalating performance and aesthetic demands on building envelope systems. Building energy consumption and related carbon emissions are now widely acknowledged problems, and broad-based performance enhancements are the only solution. We have no choice but to innovate our way to a sustainable built environment, and the facade is pivotal in this pursuit.

Facades+ is a strategic response to these emerging conditions and how they impact the building skin; a learning opportunity intended to facilitate a dialogue that spans the profession, the industry, and the academy. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the attendees. We recognize that your participation here represents an expenditure of resources, time, and money. The AEC industry has long been deficient in investing in its future. Many of us are working to change that. This conference is intended to give voice to these efforts. We especially want to thank our sponsors, and hope that all of you will recognize and acknowledge the importance of their support. We also encourage your organization to consider future sponsorship and participation in Facades+ events.

Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this Chicago event, we are planning our upcoming conferences. We will soon be announcing the series theme for 2014 and the event dates through the year.

We are excited to add Texas to the tour; in October of 2014 we will be hosting a Facades+ conference in Dallas in partnership with Tex-Fab. We are very much interested in your thoughts on how we might improve the experience. Please join the Facades+ dialogue!

Tom Bialk, LEED Green Associate, is a designer and engineer at GKD-USA. With a degree in Architectural Engineering from Delaware Tech, he has over 20 years’ experience in the field of design, building, and engineering. Tom specializes in solar management applications and the analytics that allow GKD engineers to pre-determine the quantifiable benefits of using metal fabrics. Director Juan Betancur AIA, LEED AP, has extensive experience designing supertall, commercial and mixed-use sustainable building projects. Before joining AS+GG, Juan was an associate and studio head at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Chicago, where he concentrated on large-scale projects in China. As Director of Construction Management at The University of Chicago, Larry Blouin has more than 30 years of construction experience. Blouin has managed in excess of $300 million of new construction and capital improvement projects. Blouin served as VP of Graycor Construction, managing the completion of newly constructed hotels and renovations throughout the US. He is a member of the Construction Owners Association of America and International Society of Hospitality Consultants.

As technical architecture director of SOM’s SF office, Keith Boswell oversees detailed design and construction documentation for all SF projects.

At SOM since 1981, Keith’s experience includes high-rise office buildings, museums, retail spaces, government projects, amusement parks, and airport passenger terminals.

Keith is a specialist in designing and executing technically complex building systems, such as curtainwalls, elevator systems and special construction. He is actively engaged in research and application of materials and systems for use in SOM designs. Among his accomplishments overseas are the Beijing headquarters for Lenovo, China’s largest computer company, The Poly Real Estate Headquarters in Guangzhou, and Ayala Tower One and Philippine Stock Exchange, both in Manila.

ALAN G. BRAKE, Executive Editor | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER

Alan G. Brake has written about architecture, design, and urbanism for Architecture, Architectural Record, Azure, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Metropolis, The New York Times and other publications. He studied architectural history and urbanism at Vassar College and Yale University, where he earned a Masters in Environmental Design. He is the recipient of a research grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. karen brandt | heintges

Since joining Heintges & Associates in 2001 Karen has managed numerous projects in the US and Asia, focusing on museums, cultural institutions, and custom facades for luxury retail. She currently lectures at Pratt Institute and serves as a façade specialist in the graduate department’s integrated design studio. With 25 years of experience in architecture, engineering, and façade design, Mark Dannettel is a principal with Thornton Tomasetti, where he leads the Building Skin practice for the firm’s U.S. West and Pacific Rim regions. With experience as a specialist facade contractor, he has led the technical design and execution of numerous façade projects, such as Spertus Institute’s new façade, and has taught at several universities.

Diana is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper, celebrating its 10th year. The A|N media company, based in New York City, consists of print publications covering architecture and design news in four regions. A|N’s strong online presence includes a web version, newsletters and resource guides. Diana has won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award from the Historic Districts Council, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. Diana began her career as Director of print production for The Gap’s European markets. She has a BS in Life Science from The University of Texas at Austin.

Diana’s goal is to better integrate product manufacturers with the architecture audience. Her creation of the facades+ conferences is instrumental in the accomplishment of that goal.

After working on several master planning and institutional projects, he became Senior Project Designer with HNTB and Senior Associate at Anderson Mason Dale Architects. A member of the U.S. Green Building Council, Salinas demonstrates knowledge and passion for sustainable design. In 2008, he was named Young Architect of the Year by AIA Denver. Gil Akos is a founding partner of Mode Lab, a generative design consultancy based in New York City, where he leads design, research, and curriculum development projects. Gil’s professional work contains a number of built and published projects that range in scale from buildings to products and include significant contribution to the J&J Olympic Pavilion, the Water Planet exhibit in the San Francisco Academy of Arts, and the LARD Furniture Series. His personal interests surround the relationship between simulation and materialization and ways by which this connection can be made tangible.

Kurt Ameringer | Dassault Systemes

Kurt Ameringer is an AEC Industry Strategist focused on the human side of technology and process optimization. He has helped numerous architecture and construction firms develop and deploy best practices for BIM and virtual design and construction solutions. His professional experience spans over 20 years of architecture and construction services from design to maintenance and has a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Colorado, Denver. His recent works include the Northwestern University Music and Communications Building. Matt Riemeschneider has been the engineering manager for Imperial Woodworking Company since 2003. He has a degree in Industrial Design from the University of Michigan focusing on interior architectural systems. Justin Nardone is a design engineer at Thornton Tomasetti in New York. He has diverse expertise in computation, fabrication, interoperability, and analysis. Prior to his work at TT, he was part of the SOM Black Box Group specializing in complex building skin systems as well as automating data exchange between architecture and structural disciplines. He also has experience in interactive media systems and has collaborated on installations for The Art Institute Chicago and MoMA. He has taught a variety of courses at SAIC and other schools as well as training architecture and engineering professionals in the use of CAD methodologies.

Mostapha Roudsari is the Integration Applications Developer for the Advanced Computational Modeling team at Thornton Tomasetti with a highly specialized focus on environmental building design and simulation. His diverse expertise allows him to develop automated performance-driven design and optimization workflows by integrating advanced parametric modeling with environmental performance analysis and multi-objective optimization algorithms. Roudsari is the developer for Ladybug and Honeybee, two environmental plugins for Grasshopper that allow users to import and analyze weather data and run parametric environmental studies using RADIANCE, DAYSIM and EnergyPlus directly from Grasshopper3D.

Matthew is member of the Advanced Computational Modeling group at Thornton Tomasetti, with an emphasis on establishing digital workflows catered to the multifaceted modeling processes within the company. He is responsible for teaching and developing methods that utilize parametric modeling, interoperability, integrated analysis, BIM management, and geometry rationalization. Ronnie Parsons is a founding partner of Mode Lab, a generative design consultancy based in New York City. Mark Sexton is a founding partner of Krueck+Sexton Architects. Along with Ronald Krueck, he designs and manages all of the firm’s work.
