A Message from the Facades+ Partners Welcome to our annual Chicago Facades+ conference, symposium, and workshops. The inaugural event was hosted in New York City in early 2012, and inspired a conference series that has traversed the nation twice now, with each event growing equally in anticipation, excitement, and participation. We returned to NYC this past April to launch our 3rd cross-country trek, this year touching down here in Chicago, and moving on to Dallas in October. Chicago is a world-class city of architecture with a long history of building facade innovation, an ideal location to host the Facades+ event. This year we have made the move to a new venue, having simply outgrown the now familiar IIT facility. We are confident that you will like our new home at the Art Institute of Chicago, and that together we will fill this facility with the same intensity of thought, experience, and dialogue that has inspired our past gatherings. Once again, our volunteer conference chairs, chosen from among your peers, have curated a brilliant speaker program of notable practitioners from various sectors of the AEC industry. These speakers have been very deliberately selected because of their ability to further the Facades+ dialogue, and not because they have paid a fee for the privilege of speaking to you; Facades+ is not a “pay-to-play” conference, and we work diligently to keep the program focused on deep technical content and free from promotional interests. That said, we have a select group of industry leading sponsors that have stepped up to make Facades+ the success it has become. They have a high profile at the conference venue, and we encourage all of you to spend some time with them and see what they are up to; they have been included as sponsors because they are playing a leading role in the step-change currently underway in building facade technology. This year our theme is resilience, a term that has been referred to as the new green, and the successor of sustainability; a term that has come into prominence in the wake of widespread natural disasters of increasing frequency and impact. Resilience has swelled in the AEC lexicon like storm surge, and while most grapple for understanding as to a concise meaning of the term, the City of Chicago, spearheaded by the Climate Task Force, emerged as a thought and policy leader, releasing as early as 2008 the Chicago Climate Action Plan, identifying strategies to improve the resilience of local urban infrastructure and communities. But what does the term signify with respect to the building skin? In Chicago in July the term will enter the evolving dialogue regarding the building skin, the domain of Facades+. And while we interpret our themes in the broadest possible context, we will explore this term, attempting to promote definition beyond the ambiguity of such related vocabulary as sustainability, green, and high performance. Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this Chicago event, we are planning our upcoming conferences. October will find us at a new urban venue: Dallas, another stimulating environment for a Facades+ conference, this time in partnership with Tex-Fab. Also, we are very excited to be kicking off 2015 in yet another new city; look for an announcement soon about our upcoming winter conference in sunny Los Angeles. We are very much interested in your thoughts on how we might improve the event experience and assure your continued participation in our future programs. Talk to us. As partner at KieranTimberlake, James Timberlake has explored some of the building industry’s most important topics—among them, efficient construction methods, resource conservation strategies, and novel use of materials. The firm is recognized for pioneering work including SmartWrap™, a masscustomizable building envelope; Cellophane House™, a fully recyclable, energy-gathering dwelling; and the Embassy of the United States in London. Mr. Timberlake teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and is co-author of five books including Refabricating Architecture. AFTERNOON KEYNOTE FRANCISCO GONZALEZ-PULIDO | JAHN

Francisco Gonzalez-Pulido holds a degree in Architecture from Monterrey Tech and a Master’s Degree from Harvard University. In 1992 he founded 2MX3, a design-build practice focused on industrial and residential projects with base in Mexico City. Since 1999 he has collaborated with Helmut Jahn. Since his early projects Francisco has created uncompromising architecture under the principles of integrated design. Francisco teaches and lectures regularly, his own work and in collaboration with JAHN has been widely published and exhibited around the world. He is currently JAHN’s President and Partner.

As a Senior Project Manager, Rajel has worked with YKK AP Singapore more than 19 years. With a strong design and technical background, he has successfully executed prestigious projects with complex façade designs in Singapore such as Reflections at Keppel Bay, Marina Bay Residences, and Garden by the Bay. ANDREW HEUMANN | NBBJ

As leader of NBBJ’s Design Computation team, Andrew Heumann oversees strategy, development, and implementation of computational tools for a wide range of projects and applications. He has developed a suite of tools for NBBJ’s corporate and commercial practice, which aid in the management of project metrics, environmental and urban analysis, and facade design. Andrew is trained in both architecture and computer science, and has lectured and taught seminars at Cornell, Yale, California College of the Arts, and the University of Washington. His work has been published in Wallpaper, CLOG journal, and at conferences including ACADIA and SIMAUD. MATT JEZYK | AUTODESK

Matt Jezyk is Senior Product Line Manager for AEC Conceptual Design Products. Matt leads a team developing a suite of new technologies for the AEC industry. His development teams have created multiple new applications: Autodesk Vasari, a popular Autodesk Labs project now in public beta, and Autodesk FormIt, the 1st architectural form modeler on the iPad. Matt and his group also contribute code to the open-source Dynamo Visual Programming tool for Revit and Vasari.

ALAN BRAKE | THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER

Alan G. Brake is the executive editor of The Architect’s Newspaper. He has written about architecture, design, and urbanism for Architecture, Architectural Record, Azure, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Metropolis, The New York Times, and other publications. He studied architectural history and urbanism at Vassar and Yale, where he earned a Masters in Environmental Design. He is the recipient of a research grant from the Graham Foundation.

IAN KEOUGH | AUTODESK

Ian started Dynamo while working at Buro Happold consulting engineers in New York, with a goal of bringing computational design through visual programming to BIM. Now, as a Principal Engineer at Autodesk, Ian oversees the development of Dynamo. Prior to joining Autodesk, Ian wrote mobile applications for the construction industry at Vela Systems. Ian has a Bachelors in Fine Arts, and a Masters in Architecture, but prefers to write software for a living.

Shane Burger is an internationally recognized leader in the advanced use of BIM and Computation for the design of the built environment. At Woods Bagot, he directs the vision and team dedicated to a progressive digital design agenda. As a director of the design computation and education non-profit Smartgeometry, he is actively engaged in the intersection of art and technology. Diana is CEO and co-founder of The Architect’s Newspaper. The A|N media company consists of four print publications covering architecture and design news. As A|N’s publisher, Diana won the AIA National Collaboration Award, Grassroots Preservation Award, and ASLA NY’s President’s Award. Diana began her publishing career as director of print production for The Gap’s European markets. She holds a BS from The University of Texas at Austin.

ZACHARY KRON | AUTODESK

Zach Kron is Principal Design Strategist for the AEC Conceptual Design group at Autodesk, focusing on Dynamo development. Since 2007, he has worked on the Autodesk® Revit® platform and associated tools creating feature functionality, researching parametric design practices, and generally enjoying technology. In addition to internal teaching and curriculum development at Autodesk, Zach has helped create and run workshops at MIT, ACADIA, Autodesk University and other events, and maintains the Buildz blog. Before joining Autodesk, Zach worked as a designer in several Boston-area architectural office. NATHAN MILLER | CASE INC.

Nathan Miller is responsible for leading the efforts on computational design strategy, complex modeling, and geometric rationalization at Case. Prior to joining Case, Nathan held the position of Associate Architectural Designer and Lead Computational Designer at NBBJ, where he focused on the development and

Juan Gabriel Moreno, is an award-winning, Columbian born architect and President/Founder of JGMA. He studied at California State Polytechnic University Pomona, and under Superstudio founders Christiano Toraldo di Francia and Gianni Pettena in Florence. JGMA has become one of the most highly acclaimed architecture studios in Chicago since its founding in 2010. Its portfolio includes the UNO Soccer Academy, Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy, The Cube at Old Orchard, and the Northeastern Illinois University El Centro Campus. Recent accolades include the 2014 Driehaus Award, and the 2013 Architizer Award. STEVE NILLES | GOETTSCH PARTNERS

Steve Nilles has over 34 years of professional experience working on large-scale projects throughout the world, including office, hotel, residential, and mixed-use developments. Steve specializes in the design, coordination and construction of complex buildings that integrate state-of-the-art engineering concepts and innovative building enclosure systems. He typically serves as partner-in-charge, managing projects and also spearheading innovative planning and detailing related to unique aspects of the work. He recently completed projects include Sowwah Square and Al Hilal Bank Tower in Abu Dhabi, and UBS Tower, 111S Wacker and 155 N Wacker in Chicago. He is a fivetime recipient of the AIA Chicago Chapter Devine Detail Award. MIC PATTERSON | ENCLOS | CONFERENCE DIRECTOR

Mic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology, structural glass facades, and sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced facade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures, published by Wiley. TODD SCHLIEMANN | ENNEAD ARCHITECTS LLP

Driving Todd Schliemann’s careful analyses of specific physical, environmental, historical and societal conditions have resulted in designs that expand the vocabulary of contemporary architecture and elevate public awareness of architecture’s expressive power. His designs are recognized internationally and include such notable projects as the Rose Center for Earth and Space at the American Museum of Natural History; The Standard, High Line; Natural History Museum of Utah; and New York Hall of Science. Current projects include the new Graduate School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin; and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. KEITH SPURLIN | KINGSPAN

Keith Spurlin manages the US Business Development team at Kingspan, promoting their high performance insulated metal panel (IMP) systems to building owners, design professionals and organizations by leveraging over 15 years in the architecture, construction and building products industry. The majority of his experience was as an architectural designer with prominent firms in Charlotte, NC on regional and international projects. Keith received his B.A. in Architecture at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and is a current member of the AIA and the Construction Specifications Institute. CHRIS STUTZKI | STUTZKI ENGINEERING

Chris Stutzki, Ph.D., PE, M.ASCE, and his company Stutzki Engineering, Inc. work for architects and building contractors, in the field of structural glass, lightweight structures and building facades. His strength is the conceptual and complete engineering of lightweight buildings of glass and steel, curtain walls, and art work with glass. Based in Milwaukee since 2004, Stutzki Engineering has clients in the US, Canada, and overseas. Chris was educated in Germany, and is frequently involved as consultant for innovative facade projects, with emphasis on the integration of architectural, structural and environmental aspects. One of his latest projects was the detail engineering of the Chicago TILT! project at the Hancock Tower. DR. BRANDON TINIANOV | VIEW

Edward Peck has devoted his career to the making of architecture, building skin technologies, and building systems. He has specialized on projects involving sustainable and innovative building skins as a design architect, a technical consultant, and as a design technical leader of an ETFE design/manufacturing firm. Currently he is a Vice President in the Building Skin Practice at Thornton Tomasetti working as a design / engineering consultant for building skins on projects around the world. LUKE SMITH | ENCLOS | CHICAGO CO-CHAIR

Luke Smith is a Senior Designer at the Advanced Technology Studio of Enclos, where he works alongside architectural design teams in early project conception, fabrication implementation and building skin realization. Prior to joining Enclos, Luke worked at Front Inc. and Shop Construction in New York City, and Make Architects in London. He has a Masters in Architecture from Princeton University.

Brandon Tinianov has dedicated his career to product innovation and commercialization in the field of energy efficiency and building sciences. His 20 years of lab and field experience in the construction industry have spanned various materials and systems including insulation, wallboard, glazing and software controls. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in authoring national and international standards, codes, and policies. Brandon is a career inventor, with 26 issued patents and more than twenty pending patent applications. The former CTO of Serious Materials, he also currently serves on the Board of Directors of the USGBC Northern California Chapter.

NICHOLAS AITKEN | THORNTON TOMASETTI Nicholas Aitken is experienced in the design and analysis of large-scale, complex adaptive reuse projects and stage rigging collapse investigations. He is familiar with project production from conceptual design through construction administration. Aitken is also working on the adaptive reuse of the Chicago Theological Seminary at the University of Chicago. JUAN BETANCUR | ADRIAN SMITH + GORDON GILL Juan Betancur AIA, LEED AP, has extensive experience designing supertall, commercial and mixed-use sustainable building projects. Before joining AS+GG, Juan was an associate and studio head at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Chicago, where he concentrated on large-scale projects in China. Bentacur’s approach emphasizes geographic, environmental and cultural contexts. He allows projects to grow organically. CRAIG BURTON | POSITIVENERGY PRACTICE Craig Burton, a Director at PositivEnergy Practice, has worked in the Building Performance Analysis field for 10 years. Mr. Frisch’s extensive and diverse portfolio reflects the development and implementation of new technologies for sustainable projects. His project experience includes residential, office, heath & science, transportation, higher education, exhibition and hospitality sectors. KRISTA GNATT | BULLEY & ANDREWS Krista Gnatt, LEEP AP, is the preconstruction manager for Bulley & Andrews, LLC. After 12 years of working as a project manager on a variety of building enclosure projects, Krista transitioned to a management role that focuses primarily on early project integration. Graduating with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from The University of Illinois at Chicago, then obtaining an MBA as well as an M.S. in Project Management, Krista has utilized her experience to assist her in working closely with Bulley & Andrews’ 124-year history of repeat clientele. Added to this list of achievements, Ms. Gnatt also serves on the Board of Directors for Landmarks Illinois, as well as is an active member of SEAOI, ICRI, BEC, APT, and SMPS.

RACHEL MICHELIN | THORNTON TOMASETTI Rachel joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2005 and implements sustainable design principles into the renovation of existing building facades. She has spoken numerous times on the subject, most recently at the GREENER BY DESIGN Expo in October 2012. Rachel is a licensed Architect, LEED AP BD+C, and Building Enclosure Commissioning Provider (BECxP) with Building Enclosure Knowledge (CxA+BE). MICHEL MICHNO | CH HOLDINGS Michel Michno has thirty plus years of diverse experience in the facade and ornamental metals industries, having served in an executive capacity for such leading companies as Voisin, Wausau Windows, Harmon Europe, Cupples, and Enclos. With Enclos, he led the development and implementation of advanced design and engineering systems, positioning the company as an industry leader in high-performance facade technology. Michno is currently the COO of CH Holding—the parent company of Enclos, Cupples and Environmental Interiors—with a focus on operations planning and strategic business development. JAMES C. PARKER | SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER James Parker, SE, has twenty-nine years of experience in structural design and investigation of building structures and facades, and leads structural engineering for Simpson Gumpertz & Heger’s Southern California offices. He has spoken frequently about the concept of “seismic sustainability,” emphasizing the important role of resilience for the sustainable built environment. James has designed and been engineer of record for structures and enclosures for all types of projects from laboratories to museums to multi-housing. He has worked to establish priorities for seismic rehabilitation and risk mitigation for clients on projects throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He is also the author of the AISC Design Guide 22, Facade Attachments to Steel-Framed Buildings. LANCE PARKER | THORNTON TOMASETTI Mr. Parker joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2001 and has broad and diverse experience in commercial architecture. The first portion of Mr. Parker’s career was spent working at traditional architectural firms, and focused on a building’s technical aspects. ANTHONY VIOLA | ADRIAN SMITH + GORDON GILL Anthony Viola is a senior designer with Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture where he has been working on high performance supertall projects for the past five years. YUE ZHU | SOM Yue Zhu is an Associate Director / Senior Technical Coordinator at SOM’s Chicago office. He has 20 years of experience in architectural, urban and sustainable design, with extensive technical expertise in high-rise buildings. Zhu’s portfolio includes the design and construction of many landmark structures throughout North America, Asia and Europe, including the world’s tallest Burj Khalifa, triangular Zifeng Tower, and ultragreen Pearl River Tower. He brings technical expertise, diverse professional experience, and a passion for generative systems to the design, consulting, and educational initiatives of Mode Lab. Gil holds both a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas and a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University. MATTHEW NAUGLE | THORNTON TOMASETTI Matthew is member of the Advanced Computational Modeling group at Thornton Tomasetti, with an emphasis on establishing digital workflows catered to the multifaceted modeling processes within the company. He is responsible for teaching and developing methods that utilize parametric modeling, interoperability, integrated analysis, BIM management, and geometry rationalization. Matthew has taught and lectured on the topics of parametric design, digital fabrication, and building systems at Philadelphia University, Stevens Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania. RONNIE PARSONS | MODE LAB | TECH WORKSHOP COORDINATOR Ronnie Parsons is a founding partner and Director of Education at Mode Lab, a multidisciplinary design and consulting firm servicing a global network of creative organizations. At Mode Lab, Ronnie uses analytic tools and generative techniques to help clients establish a clear understanding of the obstacles they are facing in today’s ever-changing marketplace. Before founding Mode Lab, Ronnie received his Master of Architecture from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from The University of Texas at Arlington. Ronnie has interlaced numerous studies abroad throughout his education, including The Architectural Association in London, The Institute for Experimental Architecture in Innsbruck, and The University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Since 2007 he has been a faculty member at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture. DAVID SCHEER | AUTODESK David Scheer is a Registered Architect and energy modeling expert. In addition to building design and energy consulting, David has worked in land planning and GIS research, and as a contractor and a pilot in California and Alaska. David also teaches a course on zero energy building design at UC Berkeley in San Francisco. Currently he is serving as a domain expert and Product Owner with the Green Building Studio team, the engine that provides energy analysis capabilities to a number of Autodesk tools including Revit.
