WELCOME A Message from the Facades+ Director Welcome to Facades+Dallas! This year we are celebrating our fifth year of the Facades+ conference series, which began in New York in 2012 and has since expanded to Chicago, Los Angeles, and other cities. We are thrilled to be back in Dallas, where we welcome both first-timers and return participants to the dynamic dialogue that is Facades+. Dallas is an ideal location for a conversation about high performance building envelopes. Texas’ challenging climate and booming growth necessitate innovation and collaboration among AEC industry disciplines. Facades+ Dallas convenes professionals from multiple fields, including design, development, fabrication, and academia, to examine the implications of facades trends for the Southwest and beyond. Day 1 of the conference features a series of keynote addresses and panel discussions on topics ranging from retrofits to offshore facades systems. On day 2, we continue the conversation a small group setting, in hands-on lab and dialog workshops. We thank our conference co-chair, Brendan O’Grady from CallisonRTKL, who has helped to assemble a roster of speakers representing the leading lights of building envelope design, construction, and research. We urge you to to connect with symposium presenters and your peers during networking breaks. We also invite you to visit the select industry-leading sponsors in the Methods+Materials Gallery that have stepped up to make Facades+ a success; please get to know them and their role shaping the future of facades technology. Even as we delight in our return to Dallas, we look ahead to upcoming Facades+ events, including more two-day conferences and Facades+AM, a quick-take version of Facades+ held in cities across the United States. Find us on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn for the latest news and event information. Last but not least, we are eager to hear from you about how we can improve the Facades+ experience. Talk to us. And please spread the word—help us continue to grow the Facades+ community!

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS LAB WORKSHOPS ANTHONY BUCKLEY-THORP | FLUX | LEAD APPLICATION ENGINEER In 2007, Buckley-Thorp worked as a Structural Engineer with Arup in London, moving to their Shanghai office in 2009. A heavy focus on complex geometry projects led him to become an experienced practitioner in digital tool building and parametric workflows. He now works at Flux to bridge the software and building design worlds. He is a passionate advocate for the power of technology to disrupt the industry and revolutionize the way buildings are designed and delivered. Working closely with industry partners, he supports live project teams to implement and exploit the latest advances in web technology and algorithmic design. RICHARD BRAUNSTEIN | YKK AP AMERICA | DIRECTOR, PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT For the past 18 years, Braunstein has blended careers in design and education that have yielded a unique perspective on issues of sustainable design. He currently oversees YKK AP America’s product development group and is an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech, where he developed and now teaches a course on sustainable product design. During this time, he has published and lectured on the subject of sustainable design. Braunstein has been recognized for his design contributions by the International Energy Agency (First Place Product Design Award) and Business Week magazine (IDEA Gold Award 2001 and IDEA Silver Award 2009), as well as his contribution in the classroom with an Amoco Foundation Teaching Excellence Award. PAUL FERRER | HKS LINE | DESIGNER Ferrer is a designer with HKS LINE, a research and development studio within HKS Architects. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University’s School of Architecture, and has eight years of professional experience. Within LINE, Ferrer is primarily focused on inserting environmental simulation early in the architectural design process via the development and implementation of automated, performance-driven design and optimization work-flows. These methodologies are developed utilizing a combination of Rhinoceros 3D, Grasshopper, EnergyPlus, Radiance, and custom scripted applications.

MILI KYROPOULOU | HKS|LINE | DESIGNER Kyropoulou is a designer with HKS LINE, the research and development studio within HKS Architects, and adjunct faculty at the University of Houston teaching Environmental Technology at the Graduate School. She is a LEED AP and registered architect in the UK and in Greece. She holds a degree in Architecture from the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki and a post-professional Master of Science (MSc) in Sustainable Environmental Design from the Architectural Association in London (AA), where she was trained in building performance simulation technology. Kyropoulou’s focus includes but is not limited to climate and comfort analysis, solar studies, daylight, and energy analysis. HEATH MAY | HKS|LINE | DIRECTOR May is Director of HKS Laboratory for Intensive Exploration and has over 10 years of professional experience including commercial, hospitality, sports, and healthcare, and is currently focused on r+d and application of this research to the built environment. An avid interest in passive solar design encourages a current LINE research initiative into the potential for using software for dynamic solar design for optimization of complex facades for daylighting and solar performance. In addition to r+d, May leads a design team responsible for award-winning projects. In April of 2013, May was named recipient of Building Design + Construction’s 40 under 40. JAVIER VIZOSO | FLUX | APPLICATION ENGINEER, COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNER Vizoso has a background in architecture and is a self-taught programmer and application developer. He worked for XTU Architects in Paris as a computational designer working on a wide variety of topologies. Vizoso has worked for many years developing advanced web applications such as shapelings.com, taking into account complex geometry and digital prototyping constraints. He supports the AEC industry through technology, with the goal of building better and more informed designs. At Flux, Vizoso has coded a series of Flux Labs applications that tackle challenging problems by developing streamlined workflows.

BART HARRINGTON | YKK AP AMERICA | FIELD TECHNICAL SERVICES MANAGER Harrington has 30 years of experience in the commercial glazing industry in sales, training, product management, and field technical service. Harrington has a BBA in Marketing and Economics from Georgia State University. While attending college, Harrington worked as a fabricator for a large commercial glazing contractor in Atlanta.
