Welcome to Facades+ Los Angeles! The Architect’s Newspaper is nearing the end our seventh year of the Facades+ conference program. We are pleased to welcome new attendees and longtime supporters to the program’s dynamic dialogue. We strive to bring fresh and relevant programming to each city, and have enjoyed the loyalty of our “facade geeks” who attend every event and come from around the globe to attend Facades+. Los Angeles is a center of innovation across the AEC industry, from experiments with high-performing materials to resiliency strategies. Facades+ Los Angeles brings together top professionals from the worlds of design, fabrication, and construction to consider how high-performance envelopes contribute to Los Angeles’ distinctive character and meet the city’s growing needs.

Thursday Symposium OPENING KEYNOTE THOM MAYNE DESIGN DIRECTOR MORPHOSIS An architect and educator with nearly five decades of experience, Mayne is noted for rigorous research methodology, leading to bold and sustainable projects such as the Bloomberg Center at Cornell Tech, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and the Kolon One & Only Tower. As a leader in architectural education, Mayne helped establish SCI-Arc in 1972, an institute known for its intensive and experimental academic framework and projects. In 1972 Mayne and Michael Rotondi launched Morphosis. That same year Mayne helped found the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC). In 1992 Mayne became a professor of architecture and urban design at UCLA. Significant works include: the Diamond Ranch High School (1999–2000), near Pomona, California, which brought him his first major international recognition; the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters building in L.A. (2004); and the San Francisco Federal Building (2007).
AFTERNOON KEYNOTE HEATHER ROBERGE PRINCIPAL MURMUR In addition to her role at Murmur, Roberge serves as Chair of UCLA Architecture and Urban Design where she is associate professor. She has received numerous accolades including: the 2016 Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League of New York; a 2015 AIA LA Merit award for En Pointe, an installation for the SCI-Arc Gallery; and a 2011 AIA Next LA design merit award for the Succulent House. Her work has been published widely and exhibited in group shows in the U.S. and abroad. She has also worked at Eisenman Architects, Architecture Research Office, and Davis Brody Bond.
LA CONFERENCE CO-CHAIR STAN SU DIRECTOR OF ENCLOSURE DESIGN MORPHOSIS Su serves as the office-wide lead on facade technology and fabrication. His experience includes working on both architectural design teams and facades-specific consultant teams. His guidance ensures that quality is upheld throughout the virtual design and construction processes. Su’s recent focus includes the Hanking Center Tower (Shenzhen, China), the Kolon Future Research Park (Seoul, Korea), and the New U.S. Embassy in Beirut (Beirut, Lebanon).

PRESENTERS DANIEL ADAMS NATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL MANAGER VITRO Adams has worked with Vitro for 30 years in a variety of sales and marketing positions, including National Architectural Manager in the Pacific Northwest and Western United States. He has spent the past 20 years in the construction market in business development.
KEVIN CONWAY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR SOM With a focus on mixed-use commercial, office, hotel, and residential projects, Conway works with other designers, consultants, and clients to deliver unique design solutions. Recent work includes The Jeremy Hotel, two 10-story hotel towers in West Hollywood, Calif., and two 10-story residential towers on an adjacent site. He has also led the early-concept design and entitlement phase for 1111 Sunset Boulevard and currently leads the design of a residential complex of over 2,000 units in Moscow, Russia.
TAN DIEP NATIONAL SALES MANAGER VITRO Diep offers product support to architects and glazing contractors in a five-state territory. Prior to joining Vitro (formerly PPG) in 2017, he worked as an architectural manager for PPG’s architectural coatings business. He also was a strategic account manager for Sloan Valve Co., and he held specification leadership positions at Legrand North America and Akzo Nobel.
BRIAN FALLS VP DEVELOPMENT PALISADES CAPITAL PARTNERS Falls has 20 years’ development experience in the City of Los Angeles with large mixed-use projects ranging from Playa Vista, The Bloc, NBC Universal, and Campus El Segundo to small infill developments in Hollywood. With Palisades, a design-driven real estate development and investment firm, he has eight projects under development including 1111 Sunset, a 5.5-acre residential, hotel, retail, and office complex designed by SOM in collaboration with Kengo Kuma, Natoma Architects, and Field Operations. He is active with the Central City Association, Urban Land Institute, and Downtown Streetcar as well as numerous civic groups.

SYMPOSIUM PRESENTERS GARY GERO CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICER COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES Appointed by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in November 2016 to be the County’s first Chief Sustainability Officer, Cero’s duties include: building and launching the largest community choice energy program in California; creating a countywide sustainability plan; and serving as the key environmental advisor to the Board of Supervisors. Cero previously served as the President of the Climate Action Reserve; he remains on its Board of Directors. He has also served on the CFTC’s Energy and Environmental Markets Committee, the board of California Invasive Plant Council, and the Glendale City Planning Commission.
DANIEL HAMMERMAN ARCHITECT RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP Hammerman has 15 years’ professional experience on projects of many scales and typologies, including the last decade at Renzo Piano Building Workshop working on the design, developmen and execution of the Kimbell Art Museum Expansion (2013) and currently the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (2019). He is a licensed architect in New York.
THORSTEN HELBIG FOUNDING PARTNER KNIPPERS HELBIG ADVANCED ENGINEERING Under Helbig’s supervision, Knippers Helbig has become one of the leading engineering firms for innovative specialty structures and facades. He frequently collaborates with partners in the international architectural scene as well as market leaders in the building industry. Since 2018 he has served as an Associate Professor Adjunct at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at the Cooper Union, NYC.
TAMMY JOW ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR AC MARTIN Jow’s diverse body of work includes the new Madera County Courthouse, the Campus Center at USC, the Hollenbeck Replacement Police Station in Boyle Heights, and the Cal/EPA Headquarters in Sacramento. Experienced in all aspects of design and construction, she was the Senior Designer and Project Director on the Wilshire Grand Redevelopment Project. She is currently the Project Director for the State of California’s New Natural Resources Headquarters Building in Sacramento.
ALEXANDER KORTER ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL CO ARCHITECTS Korter’s architectural experience in both Europe and the United States encompasses the design and technical coordination of academic, healthcare, civic, and commercial projects varying in size and complexity. He is currently project architect on the 140,000-square-foot Student Services and Administration building on the California State University Pomona Campus. He is also project architect on the 220,000-square-foot Health Sciences Innovation Building for the University of Arizona and leads CO Architects’ building facades group.

ASSOCIATE NBBJ A multi-disciplined design leader with over 18 years’ experience with strategic design programs across a diverse range of industries, Sadinsky’s experience coincides at the overlap of architecture and kinetic design merging aesthetic with functional. His goal for any project is attention, to create impact through needs, insight, and responsiveness.
JEANETTE SCHIEFERLE ARCHITECTURAL SALES REPRESENTATIVE YKK AP Schieferle builds brand recognition in California for YKK AP America by providing sales and technical support to glazing contractors and architects. She also supports the Southern California territory. In 20 years in the glass and glazing industry, her background includes estimating and project management for contract glaziers and architectural sales of architectural glass, curtain wall, storefront, and entrance door systems for the manufacturer/fabricator.
MATT SHAW EXECUTIVE EDITOR THE ARCHITECT’S NEWSPAPER In addition to The Architect’s Newspaper, Shaw has worked for the Columbia Laboratory for Architectural Broadcasting (C-Lab), Storefront for Art and Architecture, Architizer, and has been published in The Architectural Review, Beyond, Domus, and Icon. He wrote and researched two editions of Domus‘ guidebook Europe’s Top 100 Architecture and Design Schools. He leads the experimental research group the Critical Method Unit (CMU) at Syracuse University NYC Architecture Program and has been an invited critic at numerous schools including Yale, Columbia, and UCLA. Shaw is also the founder and co-editor of Mockitecture, a half-manifesto/ half-satire collection of architectural debauchery.
OLIVER STEPE PRESIDENT YKK AP AMERICA INC. Stepe oversees YKK AP America as a fully integrated fenestration systems producer in commercial facade systems and residential windows. Since 1992, Stepe has served in in a variety of roles, including VP sales and operations and Senior VP leading strategic-growth initiatives. He is a two-time recipient of the most influential people in the glass and metal industry award by USGlass Magazine.
RICHARD STONER SENIOR ASSOCIATE GENSLER Stoner has over 35 years’ experience in design and construction on a variety of institutional projects including working with Richard Meier, Franklin Israel, wHY, Tadao Ando, and Peter Zumthor. He currently works as an executive on the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop.

SANJEEV TANKHA DIRECTOR WALTER P MOORE Tankha leads the enclosure engineering practice. His expertise lies in developing elegant facade design solutions that balance structure, sustainability, and comfort. His experience covers aviation, sports, civic, commercial, transportation, and hospitality. Tankha is a Registered Architect in California as well as a LEED-accredited professional.
JEFF VAGLIO VICE PRESIDENT ENCLOS Engineer, architect, and researcher, Vaglio focuses on the design and performance of advanced building enclosure technologies. Over the last 12 years, Vaglio has been integral in the design and engineering of numerous structural glass facades and skylights including double-skin facades, cable-net walls, point-supported glazing, and grid-shell systems. He completed a PhD in Architecture at USC where he was an Oakley Fellow.
JAMES WARTON VICE PRESIDENT, COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNER HKS Throughout his career in architecture, Warton has maintained an interest in cutting-edge manufacturing processes and developed specialized concentration in high-resolution additive processes. He is currently focused on highly articulated metal structures and direct-to-fabrication methodologies. Within HKS LINE, his responsibilities encompass a broad range of activities that span from preliminary analysis and conceptual design through the design development and documentation of complex architectural systems. His role demonstrates proactive engagement with practice leading to implementation of additively manufactured building-scale assemblies.
JENNY WU PRINCIPAL OYLER WU COLLABORATIVE Wu is a member of the design faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI_Arc) and Columbia GSAPP. She has previously taught at institutions such as Syracuse University and Renssellaer Polytechnic Institute. In addition to her architectural practice, she also founded LACE by Jenny Wu, a line of 3D-printed jewelry. Recently, she was named one of four design visionaries by Porsche and Dwell Magazine in their “Powered by Design” documentaries, showcasing her pioneering work in 3D printing.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS WILL BABBINGTON PRINCIPAL AND FACADE DESIGN STUDIO NYL As both architect and engineer, Babbington has designed, realized, written, and presented on award-winning and high-performance enclosures around the country and world. He is an active member in numerous professional organizations such as the American Institute of Architects, an AIA National representative on ASHRAE’s 90.1 envelope subcommittee, Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council, and ASTM where he is a voting member on the E06 Performance of Buildings Committee. ANTHONY BIRCHLER VP ENGINEERING ZAHNER Since 1998, Birchler has been responsible for designing many of the patented systems used to complete bold architecture throughout the world. He shares responsibility for developing two out of five patents held by Zahner, and is best known for the ongoing work in developing the ZEPPS® Technology, the firm’s dual-curvature building system. Birchler works with owners, engineers, architects, and general contractors, providing intelligent problem solving for the production of complex facades.
TRAVIS CONRAD ARCHITECTURAL CONSULTANT NEOLITH Conrad is an OAA-accredited presenter for Rainscreen Education with a focus on ventilated facade products and systems. He worked as a designer for Cornerstone Architecture where he gained experience in rainscreen building science and project tendering.
PAUL FERRER COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNER HKS As a designer with HKS LINE, Ferrer focuses on applying computational design methodologies to assist with the design, analysis and, construction of a wide range of project types. Leveraging 11 years of professional experience—including aviation, healthcare, sports, and commercial developments—he focuses on narrowing the gap between simulation models and the built environment via the development and implementation of automated performance-driven design and optimization work-flows.
CHRISTOPHER GIOVANNIELLI PRODUCT MANAGER KAWNEER As Product Manager for curtain wall and sun control products for Arconic’s Building and Construction’s Kawneer North America division, Giovannielli manages the division’s product portfolio and develops/maintains the roadmap for all curtain wall and sun control products. Giovannielli establishes product positioning and pricing in target markets, manages promotional activities, and launch strategies across all markets.

KERENZA HARRIS HEAD OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY MORPHOSIS Harris leads Morphosis’ advanced technology team, using diverse software including CATIA 3d Experience to model and rationalize the complex spaces, skins, and structures that the firm is known for. The application of these digital tools and strategies encompasses the production of visualizations, models, and interactive environments that aid in testing and communicating concepts. Today, the firm continues to develop and explore new platforms for understanding architecture made possible by advances in 3d printing, VR, VA, and blended environments.
SAL HIDALGO SENIOR TECHNICAL ARCHITECT MORPHOSIS With over 20 years’ experience, Hidalgo brings substantial expertise in the design and execution of large-scale, technically complex, and fasttracked projects across multiple typologies including commercial/mixed use, cultural, educational, governmental, sports arenas, performing art theaters, and high-rise residential and hotel buildings. At Morphosis, he specializes in providing technical and quality control from design development through construction administration and has played a central role in notable projects including the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters Building, and 41 Cooper Square. He served as Job Captain for the award-winning Cahill Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
ALLOY KEMP SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER THORNTON TOMASETTI As a licensed architect and trained engineer, Kemp has extensive experience in the design and engineering of ETFE and other facade systems. At Thornton Tomasetti, she has been integral to large- and small-scale ETFE projects and has developed best-practice guidelines for ETFE systems. Kemp has taught at Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
ERIC LACROIX DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC ACCOUNTS STI FIRESTOP Widely recognized as the “Industry Specialist,” particularly for curtain wall perimeter fire barrier systems, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on many of the largest, most complex projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation processes. Previously, Lacroix served as STI Firestop Regional Manager, covering the Southeastern United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.
PABLO LA ROCHE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT CALLISONRTKL In addition to his role at CallisonRTKL, LaRoche is a tenured professor of architecture at Cal Poly Pomona University. His portfolio includes sustainable buildings all over the world designed with state-of-the-art tools. He has written more than 130 technical papers for journals and conferences. The second edition of his book Carbon Neutral Architectural Design was published in 2017.

WORKSHOP INSTRUCTORS GIJS LIBOUREL VICE PRESIDENT THORNTON TOMASETTI Libourel has nearly 20 years’ experience in facade engineering, structural engineering, multidisciplinary project management, and fabrication modeling. Throughout his career, he has served as lead designer and project manager for several projects in the U.S. and globally in market sectors such as cultural and institutional, mixed-use, sports, residential, and commercial. Since joining Thornton Tomasetti in 2015, Libourel has focused primarily on facade engineering projects.
TIM LOGAN COMPUTATIONAL DESIGNER HKS Logan’s work with HKS LINE concerns design, documentation, and fabrication of complex architectural systems and custom application development from the micro-scale of project-specific needs to larger macro-scale needs of the office at large. He also leads development and contributes to open-source projects such as Elk, a mapping and topography plug-in for Grasshopper and Dynamo, as well as a number of Revit plug-ins maintained from his time with LMN Architects.
ANGIE OGINO TECHNICAL SERVICES LEADER THERMAFIBER/OWENS CORNING Ogino has over 20 years’ experience in the mineral wool and firestopping industry. The developer and coordinator of all perimeter fire-containment testing for Thermafiber at Underwriters Laboratories, Southwest Research and Intertek/Omega Point Laboratories, she is also the developer of Thermafiber’s educational programs on perimeter fire containment and has presented perimeter fire-containment programs at the AIA National Conventions, as well as the CSI (Construction Specifiers Institute), PCI (Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute), and firms throughout North America.
CHRIS O’HARA FOUNDING PRINCIPAL STUDIO NYL O’Hara is facade director for the Skins Group, a division of Studio NYL, established to provide full-service facade design specializing in thermal modeling, moisture/condensation analysis, and in-depth detailing. While Studio NYL is recognized for its skins work with cutting-edge glass and glazing, their team also specializes in digitally fabricated metal skins, GFRC, reinforced polymers, stone, ultra-high performance concrete, terra cotta, and traditional precast. O’Hara currently works on multiple projects in the Boston area.
EMIR PEKDEMIR SENIOR ENERGY ANALYST BUROHAPPOLD ENGINEERING Pekdemir leads the Computational Analysis team, providing integrated design solutions for healthier and better-performing buildings using analytics. Employing advanced building performance simulation as a design tool, Pekdemir has successfully completed projects with intricate facades and complex passive and mechanical systems. With a wide range of skills including dynamic energy and airflow modeling, hygrothermal modeling, daylight and glare simulations, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), Pekdemir is also an active speaker/presenter in the world of building simulation.

SILVIA PRANDELLI TECHNICAL DIRECTOR WALTER P MOORE Prandelli specializes in complex geometry skins and the research of alternative materials for enhanced performances. Her project experience ranges from residential, high-rise, and commercial developments to cultural, civic, and public-use projects in North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle and Far East. She holds a Master’s in Building Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano.
BRAD PRESTBO SENIOR ASSOCIATE SASAKI Prestbo has over 19 years’ experience on some of the nation’s most prestigious campuses. A problem-solver with great technical skill, he has been part of several award-winning project teams. Prestbo co-founded BSA’s MakeTANK Committee and is involved in the Construction Specifier’s Institute. He frequently participates as a design critic at colleges and universities, and lectures on detailing and bringing maker culture into the design process.
AARON RAGAN PROJECT ARCHITECT MORPHOSIS Ragan has over 18 years’ experience in architectural design and construction. He joined Morphosis in 2007 and has played an integral role in several of the firm’s major projects, including on-site representation for Phare Tower, a highrise mixed-use commercial tower outside Paris, France, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, Texas (2012), and Project Architect for the Emerson Los Angeles Center in Hollywood, Calif. Most recently he served as the Project Architect on the new U.S. Embassy Campus in Beirut, Lebanon, and Project Manager for the new Orange County Museum of Art building in Costa Mesa.
KASPER HOEJMARK RAVN BUILDING PERFORMANCE ENGINEER WINDOWMASTER As a Building Performance Engineer at WindowMaster International, Kasper works specifically on all the natural ventilation design projects throughout the U.S. as well as multiple projects in Europe. He has a Master’s in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), specializing in indoor climate, optimal HVAC design, and energy-efficient constructions.
KEVIN SCHORN ASSOCIATE RENZO PIANO BUILDING WORKSHOP Schorn joined the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Genoa, Italy in 2008, as part of the team for the expansion of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston. He subsequently joined the Whitney Museum of American Art project in 2011, to manage and coordinate the architectural teams in Genoa and New York. Since then, projects include the Krause Gateway Centre, Des Moines, Iowa. Schorn has been a guest critic at the Princeton University School of Architecture, lectured at the Yale School of Architecture, and sits on the 2018 jury for the AIA COTE (Committee on the Environment) Top Ten Awards.
