A Message from the Facades+ Partners Welcome to our annual New York City Facades+ conference, symposium, and workshops. The inaugural event was hosted in New York City in early 2012 and inspired a conference series that has traversed the nation twice now, with each event growing equally in anticipation, excitement, and participation. We are thrilled to return to NYC in 2014 to launch our 3rd cross-country trek, this year including Chicago in July and Dallas in October. There is, of course, no question that the NYC conference is the premier event of the series! This year we have made the move to a new venue, having simply outgrown the familiar McGraw Hill Conference Center. We are confident that you will like our new home, and that together we will fill this facility with the same intensity of thought, experience, and dialogue that has inspired our past gatherings. Once again, our volunteer conference chairs, chosen from among your peers, have curated a brilliant speaker program of notable practitioners from various sectors of the AEC industry. These speakers have been very deliberately selected because of their ability to further the Facades+ dialogue, and not because they have paid a fee for the privilege of speaking to you; Facades+ is not a “pay-to-play” conference, and we work diligently to keep the program focused on deep technical content and free from promotional interests. That said, we have a select group of industry leading sponsors that have stepped up to make Facades+ the success it has become. They have a high profile at the conference venue, and we encourage all of you to spend some time with them and see what they are up to; they have been included as sponsors because they are playing a leading role in the step-change currently underway in building facade technology. This year our theme is resilience, a term that has been referred to as the new green, and the successor of sustainability; a term that has come into prominence in the wake of hurricane Sandy and its dramatic impact on this city and other areas along the eastern seaboard. Resilience has emerged in the AEC lexicon like a storm surge, and while most grapple for understanding as to a concise meaning of the term, New York City, spearheaded by the Resiliency Task Force, has already implemented 16 of 33 proposals related to improving the resilience of urban infrastructure and communities. But what does the term signify with respect to the building skin? In NYC in April the term will enter the evolving dialogue regarding the building skin, the domain of Facades+. And while we interpret our themes in the broadest possible context, we will explore this term, attempting to promote definition beyond the ambiguity of such related vocabulary as sustainability, green, and high performance. Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this New York City event, we are planning our upcoming conferences. July will find us at another new venue in Chicago, the Art Institute, an ideally stimulating environment for a deeper consideration of facade technology. In October, we are excited to take the tour into new territory—we will be hosting a Facades+ conference in Dallas in partnership with Tex-Fab. We are very much interested in your thoughts on how we might improve the event experience, and your continued participation in our future events. Please join the Facade+ dialogue!

In 2009 Gordon was selected as Chicago’s Best Emerging Architect by the Chicago Reader and in 2013 was elected to The College of Fellows at the American Institute of Architects. Joshua Prince-Ramus is Principal of REX, an acclaimed New York-based architecture firm which consistently challenges building typologies and promotes the agency of architecture. Seminal projects include the Wyly Theatre in Dallas, the Vakko Fashion Center in Istanbul, and the Seattle Central Library (while REX was still known as OMA NY)—all opened to critical acclaim. The subject of numerous international exhibitions and publications, REX’s work has received many of the profession’s top accolades, including the AIA National Honor Award in 2005 and 2011. Paul is a Fellow of the Construction Specifications Institute and a past President of the Institute with a focus on Envelope First Energy Efficiency strategies. Before joining Related in 2000, Ana launched her career as an architect at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), eventually becoming an Associate. She began at Related as the Liaison for the Time Warner Center, and is now responsible for the construction of Hudson Yards Tower D, the 900-foot-tall residential tower designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. She is a member of the AIA New York Chapter, serves on the scholarship & mentorship committees of New York Women Executives in Real Estate, and is Secretary on the Board of Trustees for the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. ALAN BRAKE | The Architect’s Newspaper

Alan G. Brake has written about architecture, design, and urbanism for Architecture, Architectural Record, Azure, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Metropolis, The New York Times, and other publications. He studied architectural history and urbanism at Vassar College and Yale University, where he earned a Masters in Environmental Design. He is the recipient of a research grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. richard braunstein | YKK AP America Inc.

Richard Braunstein’s careers in design and education have yielded a unique perspective on sustainable design. He currently oversees YKK AP America’s product development group and is an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech where he has developed

and teaches a course on Sustainable Product Design. Richard has published and lectured on the subject of sustainable design at Auburn University and at the University of Illinois, among others. He has received a 1st place product design award from the International Energy Agency and Business Week Magazine’s IDEA Gold Award in 2001, as well as an Amoco Foundation Teaching Excellence Award. Gustav Fagerström is a registered architect and Associate with Buro Happold New York where he leads the structural BIM and advanced modeling team. Specializing in design computation he operates at the intersection of architecture, engineering, and computer science. He has practiced architecture with UFO, KPF, and UNStudio and has published, given workshops, and been on academic juries at architecture and engineering universities worldwide. As part of YKK AP’s architectural services team in the New York market, Anthony has played a pivotal role in facade consultation for numerous notable projects in the region. Most recent projects include the Bill and Melinda Gates Hall at Cornell University and a soon to be completed 37-Story Hotel Tower on West 35th Street in NYC. Matt Jezyk is Senior Product Line Manager for AEC Conceptual Design Products. Matt leads a team developing a suite of new technologies for the AEC industry. His development teams have created multiple new applications: Autodesk Vasari, a popular Autodesk Labs project now in public beta, and Autodesk FormIt, the 1st architectural form modeler on the iPad. Matt and his group also contribute code to the open-source Dynamo Visual Programming tool for Revit and Vasari. Ian Keough | Autodesk

Ian started Dynamo while working at Buro Happold consulting engineers in New York, with a goal of bringing computational design through visual programming to BIM. Now, as a Principal Engineer at Autodesk, Ian oversees the development of Dynamo. Prior to joining Autodesk, Ian wrote mobile applications for the construction industry at Vela Systems. Ian has a Bachelors in Fine Arts, and a Masters in Architecture, but prefers to write software for a living.

Will Laufs, PhD, PE LEED AP, IWE works in the field of structural and facade engineering and specialty structures design in the US and worldwide, focusing on the use of new materials, transparent glass enclosures, challenging international structures with complex geometries and architectural building elements, where 3D- structural form-finding and detailing have an important influence on appearance and identity of spaces. He works in New York, having been educated in Germany. Will believes in the unity of architecture, sustainability, and structural engineering, focusing toward one single integrated design approach. William F. Logan | Israel Berger & Assoc., a Vidaris Co.

William Logan specializes in implementing a designer’s architectural intent through vigorous analysis and studies, presented in sketch form. He draws on a deep background and understanding of performance requirements, fabrication technologies, testing, and constructability issues. Mr. Logan has served as a primary curtain wall consultant for some of the tallest and most complex buildings in the world, including the Twin Towers of the Kuala Lumpur City Center and International Finance Center of Hong Kong. andrew lyon | gensler | nyc co-chair

Andrew joined Gensler with 8 years of experience in the development and design of enclosures. Prior to joining Gensler he focused on complex building enclosures at Grimshaw Architects and developing architectural facades for construction as the Associate Director of the Advanced Technology Studio | Enclos – New York. During his time there he worked on complex geometric enclosures, non-standard facade systems, and facade optimization. Tim has over 20 years of experience in the architectural glazing industry. As the Vice President of National Sales at SAFTI FIRST, he brings his extensive knowledge and expertise when working closely with architects and contract glaziers. James and Brian Eckersley formed the structural design consultancy Eckersley O’Callaghan in 2004. Acknowledged as an authority on the structural use of glass, Mr. O’Callaghan is perhaps best known for this highly innovative glass stairs, bridges, facades and other structural elements in a range of Apple’s flagship retail stores, including Tokyo, Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York, and London.

Mic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology, structural glass facades, and sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse aspects of advanced facade technology. Edward Peck has devoted his career to the making of architecture, building skin technologies, and building systems. He has specialized on projects involving sustainable and innovative building skins as a design architect, a technical consultant, and as a design technical leader of an ETFE design/ manufacturing firm. Currently he is a Vice President in the Building Skin Practice at Thornton Tomasetti working as a design / engineering consultant for building skins on projects around the world. doris sung | do|su studio

Doris Sung works on developing smart thermobimetals and other shape-memory alloys, unfamiliar materials to architecture, for the “third” skin. Its ability to curl when heated allows the building skin to respond for purposes of sun-shading, self-ventilating, shape-changing and structure-prestressing. She developed her research focus while teaching at USC, SCI-Arc, and other universities. Her work has been funded by the national AIA Upjohn Initiative, Arnold W. Brunner Grant, Graham Foundation Grant, Architectural Guild Award, and USC ASHSS and URAP Awards. neil thelen | Diller Scofidio + Renfro | nyc co-chair

Neil joined Diller Scofidio + Renfro in 2012 with over 10 years of expertise in the design and execution of building enclosures and the utilization of advanced digital tools for project management and delivery. Prior to Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Neil worked as a Facade Consultant at Front, Inc – specialists in architectural facade systems for new construction. He also worked at Gehry Technologies. Neil has taught graduate-level courses on fabrication, BIM, parametric design, and drawing at Columbia University and the University of Michigan. He has been a critic and lecturer at Princeton, MIT, Columbia, Pratt, University of Ohio, and the University of Minnesota.

Peter Arbour | SEELE Peter Arbour is an architect and building envelope designer. He currently works in the NY office of the German facade builder seele. Peter received his Master of Architecture from Yale University. From 2005-2011, Peter worked as Project Manager for RFR Consulting Engineers in Paris. Prior experience includes consulting with Israel Berger and Associates, and the structural engineering practice of Dewhurst Macfarlane, and Partners. Peter’s NY projects include 40 Bond Street with Herzog de Meuron, and the TKTS booth in Times Square with Perkins Eastman. Recent facade projects include The Grand Museum of Egypt with Heneghan Peng, the Tour Phare at La Defense, Paris with Morphosis, Cité des Arts et de la Culture of Besançon with Kengo Kuma, and the Broad Museum with DS + R. Peter is the designer and patent holder of the Liquid Wall curtain wall system. Keith Boswell | SOM As Technical Architecture Director of SOM’s SF office, Keith Boswell oversees detailed design and construction documentation for all SF projects. At SOM since 1981, Keith’s experience includes high-rise office buildings, museums, retail spaces, government projects, amusement parks, and airport passenger terminals. Keith is a specialist in designing and executing technically complex building systems, such as curtain walls, elevator systems, and special construction. He is actively engaged in research and application of materials and systems for use in SOM designs. Among his accomplishments overseas are the Beijing headquarters for Lenovo, China’s largest computer company, The Poly Real Estate Headquarters in Guangzhou, and Ayala Tower One and Philippine Stock Exchange, both in Manila. Demetrios A Comodromos | METHOD DESIGN Demetrios Comodromos is a practicing architect and educator since graduating Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2002 and Columbia University in 2004. He is nationally recognized as one of Design Intelligence’s ‘30 Most Admired Educators’ in his work as a studio instructor and through coordinating the core building technology courses at Rensselaer. In addition to being the design professor responsible for Professional Programs at the Center For Architecture, Science and Ecology, Demetrios was the host director of the international Smartgeometry 2012 Conference at Rensselaer’s EMPAC. After work at Grimshaw and SHoP Architects, in 2008 Demetrios was a founding partner of Method Design Architecture and Urbanism. Method’s projects vary in scale and type from urban planning in Cairo, Cyprus and the US, to custom homes, and retail flagships in NYC. RICHARD GREEN | FRONT INC. Richard is a facade specialist with over 24 years of experience. He has participated in each stage of a building enclosure’s life-cycle, from conceptual work to remediation. A champion of making safe glass design readily available, he is the technical chair of the ASTM committee for the Structural Use of Glass in Buildings, and a member of the committee guiding ASTM E1300.

He is currently involved in a variety of projects at CO Architects, where he is a leader of their facade design team. NICO KIENZL | ATELIER TEN As an expert and leader in energy and building performance, Nico consults for a wide variety of projects around the world. Nico has experience in advanced building analysis, including facade and building system optimization, and daylight and shading analysis. A LEED Fellow, Nico holds an M.S. in Building Technology from MIT, and a Doctorate of Design from Harvard University. Alex Korter | CO Architects Since graduating from the Glasgow School of Art, Alex’s architectural experience encompasses the design and technical coordination of commercial, healthcare, civic, and academic projects varying in size and complexity across Europe and the US. He holds special interest in developing innovative exterior envelope systems and making environmental, economic, social, and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of projects to ensure their success over time. Alex is currently involved in a student services building and a hospital project at CO Architects, where he is a leader of their facades group. alfonso lopez | Sentech Architectural Systems Alfonso Lopez is the Founder and CEO of Sentech Architectural Systems. As a structural engineer, Alfonso has dedicated his career to collaborating with architects in the development and use of emerging technologies in the design of large architectural venues and facades. His design work covers a wide range of projects and structural system applications; the common thread to his projects is the use of best practices and innovation in the fields of structural glazing, tension structures, and clear-span system design. Michael Ludvik | M.Ludvik Consulting Engineers Michael is a structural engineer with an ongoing interest in special structures and structural glass in particular. His work is characterized by a first principles approach, with such project highlights as the World Trade Center cable walls, and the Queens Museum of Art. DR FORREST MEGGERS | Princeton University School of Architecture Dr. Forrest Meggers is a Princeton University Assistant Professor jointly appointed at the School of Architecture and the Andlinger Center for Energy and Environment where he investigates integrated design of low exergy systems. He previously taught and led research in Singapore and in Switzerland, and has published and presented topics related to facades ranging from saving old inefficient facades, using intelligent systems, to the integration of entire mechanical systems into a facade.

Michno is currently the COO of CH Holding—the parent company of Enclos, Cupples, and Environmental Interiors—with a focus on operations planning and strategic business development. Bruce Milley | guardian industries Bruce has a unique combination of glass fabrication and commercial sales management experience. He has worked in the glass industry for over 35 years and more specifically with Guardian Industries for the last 22 years. His commercial sales experience extends beyond North America to include the Middle East, Africa, India, and Asia/Pacific. Bruce is a Canadian who now resides in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Louis Moreau | agnora Louis is a member of the AGNORA start-up team. As Senior Technical Specialist, he brings a unique mix of international experience in float manufacturing, high performance vacuum coatings, large building glazing, and high-end glass fabrication. Louis considers architecture as the purest form of art and he loves glass. He likes to explore the limits of materials and processes in order to come up with innovative, easy-to-build solutions. The most ambitious facade projects he’s worked on include More London Plot 1 and Plot 6; Mid City Place, London; Tour Granite, Paris; and Sperone Westwater Gallery, New York. ERIK OLSEN | TRANSSOLAR Erik leads the New York office of Transsolar Climate Engineering in development and validation of high-comfort, low-impact environments. Transsolar’s physics-based approach spans across traditional design disciplines to foster innovation and collaboration with clients, architects, and other engineers worldwide. Erik guides this approach with his diverse engineering and design background, including consulting MEP engineering, launching the City of Chicago’s Green Permit Program, and engineering degrees from Purdue University and MIT. Matthew Ostrow | diller scofidio + Renfro Matthew Ostrow has been at DS+R since 2009. His primary projects include Rio Museum of Image and Sound, Columbia Medical School, Culture Shed, and The Broad. Starting with the Broad competition in 2010, he has been involved with the project from initial concept through to the fabrication of the FRC veil and skylights. He worked closely with engineers, fabricators, and consultants to produce a fabrication model using Digital Project. Matthew grew up in California and has a degree in architecture from The Cooper Union. MIC PATTERSON | Enclos Mic Patterson has concentrated his professional and academic career on advanced facade technology, structural glass facades, and sustainable building practices. He has taught, written extensively, and lectured internationally on diverse

aspects of advanced facade technology. He is the author of Structural Glass Facades and Enclosures, published by Wiley. TERESA RAINEY | SOM As Director of High Performance Design at SOM, Teresa Rainey oversees the integration of technical tools with sustainable strategies to achieve high-performance design goals. Ms. Rainey is an industry leader who is committed to remaining on the cuttingedge of sustainable technology through research, training, and a willingness to consider innovative design solutions. KEVIN RICE | diller scofidio + Renfro Kevin Rice, AIA, is a Senior Associate at DS + R. He currently serves as the Project Director of the 125,000-square-foot Broad Art Museum in Los Angeles. Kevin joined DS+R in 2004. He was the Project Director for the Lincoln Center Public Spaces Project and Lincoln Restaurant, and was the Senior Detailer on Alice Tully Hall. Prior to joining DS+R, Kevin worked with Perkins & Will Architects and Polshek Partnership Architects on a wide range of cultural projects. Cecil Scheib | Urban Green Council Cecil Scheib, PE, CEM, LEED AP is Chief Program Officer of Urban Green Council, leading the NYC Building Resiliency Task Force and green codes efforts since 2012. Cecil was formerly Director of Energy and Sustainability at NYU, cutting energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 30% in five years. Markus Schulte | ARUP Markus Schulte leads Arup’s Facade Group in New York City. He joined Arup in 1993 and pioneers the design and construction of sophisticated buildings in NYC and around the world. His goal is to arrive at high quality, and efficient designs, which meet vision, program, budget, and schedule constraints of his clients. Over the years Markus’ work has been featured in multiple publications and has been recognized with numerous awards. Early projects include the Sony Roof in Berlin with Helmut Jahn, the Institute of Contemporary Art and Lincoln Center with DS + R; current projects include the expansion of the SF-MoMA with Snohetta and Cornell’s First Academic Building on Roosevelt Island with Morphosis. TIM SINGEL | guardian industries As the Director of Technical Services at Guardian’s Science & Technology Center, Tim is responsible for functional validation testing in support of Guardian’s new product development process; technical advisory support for complex product, application and design; forensic analysis; and software platform development for knowledge-sharing and glass and glazing system analysis. Tim is in his 20th year with Guardian. Christoph Timm | SOM Christoph Timm is a senior member of SOM’s Enclosure Group. He brings over 19 years of experience to the team, including project management ranging from street furniture to institutional work and large scale speculative developments. Christoph is currently working on One World Trade Center and a variety of small-scale projects with a focus on craft and detailing.

DANIEL VOS | HEINTGES Since joining Heintges and Associates in 2004, Daniel has worked on innovative and high profile building facades in New York and around the world. His expertise in structural glass design, understanding of complex geometries, and knowledge of building energy performance contribute to the realization of innovative and environmentally responsible high performance building enclosures. Daniel also teaches at Columbia University’s GSAPP where he is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture. Alejandro Zaera-Polo | AZPML & Princeton university school of architecture Alejandro Zaera-Polo is an architect and founder of London-based AZPML, a legacy company of Foreign Office Architects after its dissolution in 2011. He trained at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid and went on to do a Master in Architecture at the Harvard GSD. He worked at OMA in Rotterdam prior to establishing FOA and AZPML. He is currently the Dean of Princeton SOA and was Dean of the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. He taught at Yale, Columbia, and UCLA. Zaera-Polo is recognized as an original theorist of contemporary architecture, and his texts can be found in many professional publications such as El Croquis, Quaderns, A+U, Arch+, Log, AD and Harvard Design Magazine. GIL AKOS | Mode Lab | tech workshop coordinator Gil Akos is a founding partner of Mode Lab, a generative design consultancy based in New York City, where he leads design, research, and curriculum development projects. Gil’s professional work contains a number of built and published projects that range in scale from buildings to products and include significant contribution to the J&J Olympic Pavilion, the Water Planet exhibit in the San Francisco Academy of Arts, and the LARD Furniture Series. His personal interests surround the relationship between simulation and materialization and ways by which this connection can be made tangible. DANIEL DAVIS | CASE inc. Daniel Davis leads research efforts at CASE focused on the impacts of technology on the building industry. Having recently completed his PhD entitled “Modeled on Software Engineering: Flexible Parametric Models in the Practice of Architecture” at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, Daniel is particularly interested in the changes to design practice brought about by computation. He has taught internationally at universities including RMIT, Melbourne University, and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Daniel’s research has been published in Architectural Design, International Journal of Architectural Computing, CAAD Futures, and regularly posts on his website danieldavis.com. Tim Dumatrait | CASE inc. At CASE, Tim Dumatrait provides BIM and project support for AEC clients where he helps designers minimize process friction and fosters clearer decision making. Previously, at EDR in New Orleans, he worked to enhance the use of software tools for daylight analysis, energy modeling, construction cost analysis, LEED

documentation, and fabrication. He earned both his Bachelor’s of Science and Master of Architecture degrees from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he taught Revit and Rhino workshops after graduating. His collaborative projects have been exhibited at the Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles and AIA Emerging Professionals Annual Exhibition. MATT JEZYK | Autodesk Matt Jezyk is Senior Product Line Manager for AEC Conceptual Design Products. Matt leads a team developing a suite of new technologies for the AEC industry. His development teams have created multiple new applications: Autodesk Vasari, a popular Autodesk Labs project now in public beta, and Autodesk FormIt, the 1st architectural form modeler on the iPad. Matt and his group also contribute code to the open-source Dynamo Visual Programming tools for Revit and Vasari. Ian Keough | Autodesk Ian started Dynamo while working at Buro Happold in New York, with a goal of bringing computational design through visual programming to BIM. Now, as a Principal Engineer at Autodesk, Ian oversees the development of Dynamo. Prior to joining Autodesk, Ian wrote mobile applications for the construction industry at Vela Systems. Ian has a bachelors in fine arts, and a masters in architecture, but prefers to write software for a living. Matthew Naugle | Thornton Tomasetti Matthew is member of the Advanced Computational Modeling group at Thornton Tomasetti, with an emphasis on establishing digital workflows catered to the multifaceted modeling processes within the company. He is responsible for teaching and developing methods that utilize parametric modeling, interoperability, integrated analysis, BIM management, and geometry rationalization. Matthew has taught and lectured on the topics of parametric design, digital fabrication, and building systems at Philadelphia University, Stevens Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania. ronnie parsons | Mode Lab | tech workshop coordinator Ronnie Parsons is a founding partner of Mode Lab, a generative design consultancy based in New York City. At Mode, Ronnie leads the design and development of products and environments for institutional as well as private clients. Stemming from his interest in an openended and promiscuous approach to design, Ronnie has spent the past four years co-directing over 100 workshops globally. His on-going experience connecting and learning with others continues to be a source of inspiration and a motivating factor behind Mode Lab fabrication, and building systems at Philadelphia University, Stevens Institute, and the University of Pennsylvania. David Scheer | AUTODESK David Scheer is a Registered Architect and energy modeling expert. In addition to building design and energy consulting, David has worked in land planning and GIS research, and as a contractor and a pilot in California and Alaska. David also teaches a course on zero energy building design at UC Berkeley in San Francisco. Currently he is serving as a domain expert and Product Owner with the Green Building Studio team, the engine that provides energy analysis capabilities to a number of Autodesk tools including Revit.
