WELCOME
New York City April 16 + 17 2015
A Message from the Facades+ Partners Welcome to the Facades+NYC conference, symposium, and workshops! The first Facades+ event was hosted in New York City in early 2012, and we are excited to return for this, our fourth NYC conference. That initial event in 2012 inspired an ongoing series that has traversed the nation three times. Each event has grown in anticipation, excitement, and participation. Since last year’s Facades+NYC, we have touched down in Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles; great cities all, but NYC is home, and it’s a bona fide pleasure to bring this allthings-facade dialogue back to its roots. We are confident that first-timers will find Facades+ an engaging experience, and that return participants will find it even more so, and that together we will create the same intensity of thought, experience, and dialogue that has inspired our past gatherings. Facades+NYC will focus on the dynamic building activity currently underway in the city, the hottest construction market in the U.S. Curbed NY recently cited 42 notable building projects in the works or recently completed—with many landmarks already among them—that are transforming the urban environment of this vibrant city. What is driving this activity? How are these novel projects being realized? What changes are taking place with facade technology to accommodate this urban transformation? Then there are the new materials that are finding application in the building skin and the accompanying design strategies that address varying aspects of performance and appearance. More than a few high-profile facades were unveiled in 2014, with many more in the works for completion this year. Some of these recently completed projects have been spectacular successes, some of them far less so. What makes the difference? Project delivery strategy appears to be linked as a strong contributing factor, but in what way?
Mic Patterson Enclos Conference Director
Diana Darling The Architect’s Newspaper Conference Director
Sameer Kumar SHoP Architects NYC Co-Chair
These and many more questions will be addressed in a dialogue that is likely to redefine perceptions of the role of the facade in a beautiful and sustainable built environment. The Thursday symposium will include a series of lectures and panel discussions on topics derived from these and related considerations. Friday comprises workshop programs tailored to allow a deeper and more hands-on exploration of the topics with smaller groups.
Alex Barmas Enclos NYC Co-Chair
Once again, our volunteer conference chairs, chosen from among your peers, have curated a brilliant speaker program of notable practitioners from various sectors of the AEC industry. We also direct your attention to the select industry-leading sponsors that have stepped up to make Facades+ the success it has become. They have a high profile at the conference venue, and we encourage all of you to spend some time with them and see what they are up to; they have been included as sponsors because they are playing a leading role in the step-change currently underway in building facade technology.
Susan Kramer The Architect’s Newspaper Event Director
Even as we share in the enthusiasm for this NYC conference, we are planning our 2015 events, We will continue with our popular Facades+AM morning forums, with the next one scheduled for Houston on June 18. We have set our 2015 conference locations, including a new city, Miami, so keep an eye out and plan your schedules accordingly. As always, we are very much interested in your thoughts on how we might improve the Facades+ experience and assure your continued participation in our future programs. Talk to us. And please spread the word to join the Facade+ dialogue!
