Conference Co-Chair JOE VALERIO

Founding Principal, Valerio Dewalt Train Associates As a founding principal of VDTA, Valerio’s architectural expertise positions him as a leader and innovator in the design world. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence across all aspects of the field, he is a five-time winner of the National AIA Honor Awards, has won more than 50 juried awards, and had his work featured in over 150 journal articles. His tenure also includes university teaching and research, authoring multiple books, lecturing in the United States and abroad, and guiding the growth of one of the best firms in the country.

Speakers DAVID BAKER

Founding Principal, David Baker Architects Baker’s eponymous firm, based in San Francisco, Oakland, and Birmingham, Alabama, creates acclaimed buildings in urban environments. DBA is known for exceptional housing, creative site strategies, designing for density, and integrating new construction into the public realm. A Fellow of the AIA since 1996, Baker has more recently been honored as a 2018 HIVE 50 Design Innovator and as the AIA California Council 2012 Distinguished Practice.

BENJAMIN BYE Associate, CO Architects

Since joining CO Architects in 2014, Bye has served as a designer for Tata Hall for the Sciences at UC San Diego, the Center for Medical Education Innovation at Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences, as well as on the Botany Building Master Plan & Renovation at UCLA. Prior to joining CO, Bye worked in London, aiding in the design and detailing of a structural glass facade for the renovation of a historic mixed-use high-rise project. He has also undertaken sponsored study of massive timber constructions in both Austria and the UK. He has a BArch from the University of Oregon.

TAN DIEP

National Architectural Manager, Vitro Diep offers product support to both

6

architects and glazing contractors in a five-state territory. Prior to joining Vitro (formerly PPG) in 2017, he worked as an architectural manager for PPG’s architectural coatings business. He also was a strategic account manager for Sloan Valve Co., and he held specification leadership positions at Legrand North America and Akzo Nobel.

RON ELAD

Associate Principal, BuroHappold Elad has expertise primarily in cultural sector project leadership. Currently he runs multi-disciplinary engineering teams and serves as client representative on a variety of projects. He also serves as BuroHappold’s US Regional BIM Leader. In addition, Elad serves on the Material & Applications board of directors, a nonprofit dedicated to building a public culture of experimental architecture in Los Angeles.

PABLO LA ROCHE Associate Vice President, CallisonRTKL

La Roche serves as a leader for the firm’s Performance-Driven Design SM initiatives, focusing on sustainable design for the commercial practice group. His portfolio includes sustainable buildings all over the world. A tenured professor of architecture at Cal Poly Pomona University, he has also written more than 130 technical papers, and his book Carbon Neutral Architectural Design placed in the top ten in Amazon’s Energy and Buildings category. Design Principal, CO Architects

As Senior Design Architect for the Pacific Visions Theater and Gallery expansion at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Luong led all phases of research, design, and construction management. Other recent projects include: the Acuario Mazatlán, Mexico, and the Alcatraz Island National Park Embarkation site. Her work received the Los Angeles Real Creativity Award (2009) and the Southern California Developer’s Forum Award (2008). She has a MArch from Rice University.

PAUL MUENCH

Associate Director, University Research Park, Inc. Muench leads URP’s real estate development, finance, and operational functions. After roles in real estate finance with Metropolitan Life Insurance Real Estate Development and Towle Real Estate, Muench also worked for Urban Land Interests where he made contributions to their transformational, mixed-use projects in downtown Madison, including Block 89, Findorff Yards, and the redevelopment of USBank Plaza, and Anchor Bank. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Business Graaskamp Real Estate Program and holds a MArch from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

JOHN S. RAHAIM

Swanborn has designed a diverse portfolio of award-winning projects comprised of university research and academic facilities, community college and K-12 facilities, schools of medicine and health sciences, and healthcare facilities, as well as national and international commercial, residential, and mixed-use facilities. At CO Architects, Swanborn leads and sets design direction within the office and projects. He received his Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University, and his BArch from the University of Southern California.

DANIEL VOS Principal, Heintges

Vos is a registered architect and principal at Heintges, a full-service architecture and engineering firm offering state-ofthe-art expertise on the design and implementation of building envelopes. His knowledge of glass design and facade performance has contributed to innovative and environmentally responsible buildings around the world. Vos studied architecture in Paris and New York, and completed his MArch at Columbia University where he currently teaches.

ROBERT WEBBER

Planning Director, City and County of San Francisco

Senior Associate, Valerio Dewalt Train Associates

In his role as Planning Director for the City and County of San Francisco, Rahaim oversees long-range planning, environmental reviews, and development entitlements for most physical development in the City. Prior to this appointment, Rahaim was Director of Long Range Planning for the City of Seattle, and was the Founding Executive Director of CityDesign, Seattle’s office of Urban Design. He received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Michigan, and a MArch from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. During his tenure, the Planning

Webber’s passion for innovative design is reflected in his broad experience with corporate, hospitality, and multi-family residential projects. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, he is VDTA’s Chief Sustainability Officer. In 2011, Webber co-founded the Living Building Challenge (LBC) Collaborative: Chicago, an organization affiliated with the International Living Future Institute. In 2013, he earned the ENR Top 20 Under 40 distinction for his work in the field of architecture and advocacy of sustainability within the profession.

ERIC LACROIX STI Firestop

Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.

MICHAEL ONDRUS Eastman

As Architectural Market Manager, Advanced Interlayers for Laminated Glass in the Americas, Ondrus works with architects, specifiers, engineers, consultants, and designers as well as laminating customers, providing advanced yet practical interlayer solutions for laminated glass that meet project-specific performance and aesthetic needs for exterior and interior applications. He has over 25 years’ glass industry marketing and technical experience at the float glass, interlayer, specialty fabricator, and processing levels.
