SPEAKERS HARRIET BURDETT-MOULTON NWTAA, FRAIC, Ph. D. (h.c.) Métis architect Harriet Burdett-Moulton, Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), was the first architect to practice in what is now known as Nunavut. One of the most iconic and important projects to Harriet as a Métis person is the Piqqusilrvvik Inuit Learning Facility in Clyde River, Nunavut. Piqqusilrvvik—which roughly translates as “a place to keep the things we’ve learned”—is a cultural learning facility specifically designed for the Inuit culture. Harriet is from Labrador, with Inuit, British and Montagnais roots. She spent her early life in a traditional nomadic lifestyle. In 1976 Harriet graduated from TUNS, now Dalhousie School of Architecture, and became the fist Indigenous female Architect in Canada in 1979. She is a member of the RAIC Indigenous task force and is well-respected and honored architect. In May 2016, Harriet was made a fellow of the RAIC, in June 2017, she received an Honorary Doctorate of Design from Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University in Toronto, and in November 2017, she was awarded a Labradorian of Distinction metal.

MATTHEW COVALL Senior Associate | Perkins&Will Senior Associate for Perkins&Will, Matt Covall, has worked on some of San Francisco’s most sustainable projects, including 1 De Haro, SF’s first CLT building and California’s first multi-storied fully mass timber building. As a licensed architect with more than a decade of experience, Matt brings a keen eye for detail and clear communication to his work. Covall is not only knowledgeable in the technical needs of large-scale projects, but is adept at achieving the design and vision within strict budget and schedule constraints.

LUCAS EPP Engineering + 3D Manager | StructureCraft Epp is a structural engineer with over 15 years’ experience working in North America, the U.K., and New Zealand. His expertise with complex geometry and Grasshopper/Rhino has led him to be involved in projects where synergy between architecture and structure drives the design. Epp speaks and writes widely on computational design, timber engineering, and mass timber construction, and has lectured at the Architectural Association in London, ETH Zurich, 6 TimberCon March 2021

Imperial College, and the University of British Columbia. He participates in several code committees, is an author of the Nail Laminated Timber Design Guide, and is involved in writing a new Mass Timber Floor Vibration Design Guide.

ALEC HOLSER Partner | Opsis Architecture For over 38 years Alec Holser has designed significant public buildings for education and cultural institutions that have earned recognition by more than 60 local, regional and national design awards including two national AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten awards for Net-Zero energy buildings. His work has pushed through traditional boundaries and silos to create dynamic interactive places that build community. His work is deeply rooted in the context of the site and a passion for understanding the relationship between the natural and man-made worlds. Raised and educated in the Northwest, the use of wood both in structure and finish has been central to his work.

ROBERT JACKSON Associate | Fast + Epp Robert Jackson is a structural engineer in Fast + Epp’s Vancouver office and offers a unique skill set due to his hands-on experience as a carpenter and fine woodworker. He is a designer with expertise in timber, steel, and concrete in both Canada and the US. Over his career, Jackson has developed a particular specialization in mass timber design, having contributed to the success of many of Fast + Epp’s most innovative timber projects across North America. Robert recently received two prestigious awards from the United Kingdom’s Institution of Structural Engineers, including The Young Structural Engineering Professional Award, which is an international recognition of achievement in structural engineering and showcases engineers who are driving the profession forward.

ANNE KOVEN Executive Director | Mass Timber Institute Koven has spent decades working in government and business, primarily in the areas of environmental and resource management. She was appointed to the Ontario Provincial Forest Policy Committee in 2008, was a trustee and secretary treasurer of the Trees Ontario Foundation, and represented the Foundation on the Natural


SPEAKERS Spaces Leadership Alliance. She served as President and Executive Director of the Ontario Forestry Association. Koven is an professor at the University of Toronto’s Graduate Department of Forestry, and assisted the Faculty in obtaining accreditation of the Master of Forest Conservation program by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board in 2014.

ANDREW LAWRENCE Associate Director & Global Timber Specialist | Arup Andrew Lawrence is the leading Timber specialist at Arup, a member of the European Timber Design Code Committee and Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Timber Engineering at Cambridge University in the UK. Lawrence lectures worldwide on the structural use of timber and is working with the timber industry across the world to help make timber a mainstream construction material. He is responsible for timber training and guidance within Arup and is lead author for the 2nd Edition of ‘Appraisal & Repair of Timber Structures’ published by the Institution of Civil Engineers, and has also appeared on Grand Designs discussing new developments in timber. His projects include the highly acclaimed Metz Pompidou with Shigeru Ban and The Smile in collaboration with Alison Brooks, the world’s first largescale hardwood CLT structure. In addition to timber, Andrew is a Conservation Accredited Engineer, specialising in the assessment and repair of existing and historic structures and has worked on the 12th Century oak roof of Beaulieu Abbey and 15th Century oak roof of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

DR. PATRICIA LAYTON Director | Wood Utilization + Design Institute Clemson University Dr. Patricia A. Layton, is the of Director of Clemson’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute and a professor Forestry. She served prior to this as Director of the School of Agricultural, Forest, and Environmental Sciences (2010-2014) and Chair of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources (1999-2010). She serves on the Board of Directors for the SFI Program. Before joining Clemson University, Layton was a Senior Director with the American Forest & Paper Association and a Manager at Scott Paper Company. In these positions, she developed new forestry and marketing initiatives, including playing a vital role in the development of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program.

VINCE LEE Associate Partner | Rogers Partners For over twenty years, Vince Lee has explored the balance between fine craftsmanship and a vision for form and materials that stand the test of time, yet address the needs and spirit of their day. He has led the designs for numerous award-winning projects within the public realm ranging from residential developments to educational facilities and parks. Recent projects include the 12-acre St Pete Pier; the Henderson-Hopkins School, the first new Baltimore public school built in over 20 years; and the Rice University Kraft Hall of Social Sciences. He is currently leading the design of Nanotronics’ flagship production center, turning a historic Civil War era shipbuilding warehouse in the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a vertically-integrated advanced manufacturing warehouse facility and headquarters which is currently producing COVID-19 treatments at-scale to meet global accessibility needs.

RYAN MCCLANAGHAN Associate | DIALOG Ryan joined DIALOG in 2012 as an architectural and urban designer. He is passionate about creating functional, elegant designs that are specific to each project’s unique culture, local community, and environment. Design innovation, research, and collaboration with both clients and colleagues drive much of Ryan’s work. Ryan is currently immersed in DIALOG’s growing portfolio of mass timber projects, most notably as the project designer of 2150 Keith Drive, a 10-storey mass timber office building located in Vancouver, BC. The project’s innovative structural system is undergoing small-scale and full-scale structural testing at Queens University and the University of Alberta, which will help inform future tall wood projects. A member of the City of Vancouver’s Mass Timber Advisory Committee, Ryan is continually seeking to evolve his work through new creative avenues in both the professional and personal realms.

ANNE MONNIER Principal | KPFF Consulting Engineers Anne Monnier takes a highly collaborative approach to design. She strives to find holistic solutions that combine the owner’s goals with the building architecture, designed systems, and construction techniques. Anne’s deep commitment to sustainability motivates her to create structures that respect March 2021 TimberCon 7


SPEAKERS the project location, site, and future generations they will serve. Her hope is to design building structures that withstand the test of time yet remain flexible for future adaptations. Since joining KPFF in 1993, Anne has worked on numerous high-profile projects. Monnier is actively involved with the Architectural Foundation of Oregon, serving on the board of directors.

ALAN ORGANSCHI Partner | Gray Organschi Alan Organschi is a principal and partner at Gray Organschi Architecture, a firm recognized internationally for its integration of design, construction, and environmental research. He is also the founder of the fabrication workshop and construction management firm JIG Design Build which in 2018 created the Ecological Living Module, a fully self-sustaining micro house for the United Nations Environment Program. As a member of the Senior Design and Technology Faculty at the Yale School of Architecture, Organschi directs the newly inaugurated Yale Building LAB, which conducts advanced research in the contemporary building sector. His ongoing research project, the Timber City Initiative, examines the application of emerging structural wood fiber technologies to the construction of global cities. Organschi is a co-author of the upcoming book Carbon: A Field Manual For Building Designers and the scientific paper “Buildings as a Global Carbon Sink” published in January 2020 in the journal Nature Sustainability.

BRIAN PORTER Principal | Two Row Architect Brian hails from Six Nations of the Grand River. He has been a business leader for many years, designing and overseeing the construction of projects for First Nation communities across Canada and the United States. He has demonstrated success in designing culturally appropriate projects for these communities and has worked to maximize the participation of First Nation skills and trades. Two Row Architect promotes meshing traditional symbols into current building technology while actively promoting the creative and environmentally conscious use of building materials.

AARON SCHILLER Design Principal / Schiller Projects Aaron Schiller is the founder and principal of Schiller Projects, a strategic design consultancy and architecture practice, which has operated globally 8 TimberCon March 2021

since 2013.Schiller comes to design and architecture after a decade spent working in a range of fields, from urban planning, to community organizing for the Obama administration on its journey to the White House. His work during 2008 campaign marked the emergence of the data-heavy work that defines the firm. Aaron’s great interest lies in developing design-based strategies for experiential and architectural solutions that empower the key stakeholders to align their environments with their goals. Current projects see Schiller’s studio applying its analytical process to studies of timber structures in London and New York City and to climate-driven residences in Sedona and Palm Springs. Uniting the projects is a contemporary way of collecting, organizing, and processing data in the service of designing better buildings and better spaces.

KRISTIN SLAVIN, AIA Director of Building Innovations | Sidewalk Labs Kristin Slavin is an Associate Director of Building Innovations at Sidewalk Labs. She has focused her career in architecture and development specializing in mass timber construction. Prior to joining Sidewalk Labs, Slavin led the design of the tallest CLT building in the United States upon completion, Carbon12, among other innovative mass timber projects. Her crossover between development and architecture ensures a holistic consideration of the built environment and execution of sustainable systemic change within the building industry.

ELADIA SMOKE Principal | Smoke Architecture KaaSheGaaBaaWeak | Eladia Smoke is Anishinaabekwe from Obishikokaang | Lac Seul First Nation, with family roots in Alderville First Nation, Winnipeg, and Toronto. Eladia has worked in architecture since 2002, and founded Smoke Architecture as principal architect in 2014. She is a Master Lecturer at Laurentian’s McEwen School of Architecture. Her career includes principal architect with Architecture 49, Thunder Bay, and architect with Prairie Architects, Winnipeg. Eladia has served on the RAIC’s Indigenous Task Force since its inception, 2015. Eladia is on the Unceded international team of Indigenous designers and architects; led by Douglas Cardinal, this team will represent Canada at the 2018 Venice Biennale.


SPEAKERS EMMETT SNYDER Project Manager | Mass Timber Institute Emmett Snyder is a project manager at the Mass Timber Institute in the John H Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto. He holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular genetics and a master’s degree in forestry. Before joining the MTI team, he has worked in research, education, invasive species management and bioenergy. Emmett’s research interests include value-added manufacturing, forest inventory, supply chain optimization, and mathematical modeling of forest management in flammable landscapes inhabited by woodland caribou.

ROBERT WRIGHT Interim Dean | School of Architecture, Landscape and Design at University of Toronto; Principal Investigator | Mass Timber Institute Robert Wright is interim dean of the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. He’s a lifelong educator, with 35 years of experience as a professor of landscape architecture and an extensive record of research in the areas of design theory, urban landscapes, forensic landscape architecture, and simulation and visualization. He was dean of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Forestry from 2017 to 2019, director of the Daniels Faculty’s Centre for Landscape Research from 2014 to 2019, director of the Daniels Faculty’s Master of

Landscape Architecture program from 2011 to 2014, and, from 1999 to 2004, director of the University of Toronto’s interdisciplinary Knowledge Media Design Institute. In addition to his academic activities, Robert maintains a successful private landscape architecture practice, iz-design. He recently contributed site planning and landscape design to Laurentian University’s new McEwen School of Architecture building. The project won an OAA Award in 2018.

MIKE YORKE President | Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario Mike Yorke joined the Carpenters’ Union as an apprentice in 1982. He completed his Carpentry apprenticeship in 1986, and worked on several major construction projects including condominiums, airports, hospitals, power plants, refineries, office towers, institutions, and bridges. Yorke is President of the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario’s Area. The Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario has over 22,000 members across Ontario. Yorke is a member of the Board of Directors of the College of Carpenters and Allied Trades which oversees training and skills development. Recent focus has been to develop a training program for mass timber/CLT as this sector experiences real growth. Yorke plays an Industry Advisor role as a Board member of the Ontario Construction Secretariat and the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO), as well, the Ontario Cast in Place Concrete Development Council (OCCDC). Mike Yorke is also the recipient of the Wood Works Ontario Wood Champion Award in 2016.

Jared has an extensive wood design and engineering background, having worked both as a consulting engineer and more recently as a product expert for the APA – The Engineered Wood Association. He has extensive knowledge of building codes and design standards for engineered wood products and is an excellent resource for timber framed design community. Aside from spending as much time as possible with his family, Jared likes to golf, listen to music and take his motorcycle out on the open road. He holds Professional Engineer licenses in multiple states and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming. KEVIN ZHANG | Entuitive

Kevin is a building envelope specialist at Entuitive and has his PhD from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. His thesis work involved studying the effects of moisture in wood sheathing on durability with respect to mould growth. Kevin is a fan of mass timber and is excited to see how the industry progresses as new regulations allow for more tall timber buildings. TANYA LUTHI | Entuitive

Tanya is a structural engineer and an active member of the NYC code committee, advising on matters related to mass timber. She also served on the structural work group of the ICC Ad-Hoc Committee on Tall Wood Buildings,which introduced increased height limits on mass timber buildings to the 2021 IBC.
