Conference Co-Chairs DAVID CONSTABLE Senior Associate, KPMB Architects Constable joined KPMB in 2006 after working in the U.S. and Ireland. His projects include a series of complex architectural interiors for clients in New York and Toronto, including work on the new office interiors for The Globe and Mail. For these projects, he coordinated the implementation and verification of programmatic requirements, consultants’ work, the architectural team’s production efforts, and construction administration. He was a member of LEED Platinum certified Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario head office, and is the associate-in-charge of all phases of the expansion and renovation of The Brearley School.
GEOFFRY TURNBULL Director of Innovation, KPMB Architects Turnbull leverages a background in design, business, film, and computation to advocate for an evidenced-based, holistic approach to design and sustainability. Collaborating across teams to lead KPMB’s efforts for innovation and sustainability, he brings extensive research in sustainable design and technology to each project.Turnbull has worked on projects through all phases of design and construction, including the LEED Platinum–certified Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario head office, Toronto, and the recently completed Wilson School of Design for Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
Speakers THOMAS AUER Partner, Managing Director, Transsolar Auer has collaborated with world-known architecture firms on numerous international design projects. He is a specialist in energy efficiency and environmental quality and has developed concepts for buildings and districts around the world noted for their innovative strategies. Auer has taught at various universities around the world and since 2014 is full Professor for Building Technology and Climate Responsive Design at the TU of Munich, with a focus in bridging academia and environmental design. His research focuses on form and materiality and their influence on performance and environmental quality at different scales.
LELAND DADSON Senior Architect, MJMA Dadson is MJMA’s in-house Mass Timber and Passive House Design Specialist. With over 15 years’ experience over a broad range of campus and community project typologies, his passion for sustainable design and carbon sequestering building materials has spurred a specialization within the firm, allowing him to provide an advisory role throughout the development of each project. Dadson has an expertise in the design and specifications of mass wood products in alignment with current code and standards of practice, and is involved in developing alternative solutions for work beyond current building code limits. on the University of Toronto’s Academic Wood Tower, he will deliver a 14-story tower that, once built, will be the tallest mass wood structure in North America.
BRIAN HUBBS Managing Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science Hubbs has over 25 years’ experience as a consultant practicing exclusively in the field of building science. He has a unique blend of theoretical and hands-on knowledge gained from designing facades for new buildings, as well as completing hundreds of forensic investigations and rehabilitation and research projects. He has extensive experience with high-rise and Iconic facade systems, components, and materials and has designed new and innovative facade systems for high-rise wood and passive house projects. An engaging and vibrant presenter, he regularly speaks at seminars, conferences, and guest lectures on a wide range of building science and facade engineering topics.
KATHERINE FAULKNER Founding Principal, NADAAA Since 2011, Faulkner has directed efforts to expand the firm’s prototyping facilities and portfolio, extending NADAAA’s geographic reach and capacity to deliver large projects. Working for over 20 years in residential, academic, institutional, and health-care projects, her recently completed projects include: the Daniels Building at The Univer-
Speakers sity of Toronto and the Beaver Country Day School Research and Design Center. Current work includes: the MIT Site 4 Gateway project; the Adams Street Branch Public Library in Boston; and a new residence hall for the Rhode Island School of Design. Faulkner has been recognized with: the 2019 AIA COTE Top 10 Award for the Daniels Building; the 2017 Boston Society of Architects Women in Design Award of Excellence; a 2014 Holcim Award; three Green Good Design Awards; seven Progressive Architecture Awards; and numerous AIA and BSA Awards. She lectures internationally, most recently for the National AIA Conference in New York and the OAA Conference in Toronto.
MARTIN DAVIDSON Principal, Diamond Schmitt From his early work on the Jerusalem City Hall and the Jewish Community Centre in Manhattan to his renovations to the Ontario Legislative Assembly building, Davidson has distinguished himself on institutional buildings of varying scale and complexity. Recently, he was the project architect for Holy Blossom Temple and School,Toronto, and the new Constantine Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building, Drexel University, Philadelphia—both projects with a strong sustainable design focus. While serving on the Executive of the Toronto Society of Architects, he was responsible for initiatives including: the institution of the Fellowship Award Program, the TSA film and lecture series, and exhibitions by national and international architects. He has also represented the architectural community on urban design issues, serving as the TSA representative to the City of Toronto on the development of urban design guidelines.
BRUCE KUWABARA Founding Principal, KPMB Architects Kuwabara has been recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada, the RAIC Gold Medal, and the Ontario Association of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award. Projects include: the LEED Platinum Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg; the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University; the Julis Romo Rabinowitz Building and Louis A. Simpson International Building, Princeton University; Canada’s National Ballet School, the Canadian Museum of Nature, and the Global Centre for Pluralism, Ottawa. Recent works include: the Remai Modern Art Gallery, Saskatchewan, and the Ronald O. Perelman Center for Political Science and Economics, University of Pennsylvania. He serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal, and is a member of the Design Review Committee for the University of Toronto.
CAROL PHILLIPS Partner, Moriyama & Teshima Architects Phillips developed her design leadership over 20 years working in Canada and abroad. She was named Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in 2014. Recently completed work includes: Ottawa’s Parliament Hill Visitor Welcome Centre, The Ryerson Centre for Urban Innova-
tion, and the UBC Okanagan “Commons.” She is currently Partner in Charge of two significant mass-timber buildings including: the George Brown College “The Arbour” Tall Wood Building (in collaboration with Acton Ostry Architects), commissioned through an international design competition. The project has already won three design awards.
JEFF RANSON Regional Director - Greater Toronto Area, Canada Green Building Council Ranson leads green building market transformation in southern Ontario through the CaGBC’s Greater Toronto Chapter. Previously, he was the founding Executive Director of the Toronto 2030 District and Manager of Education for Sustainable Buildings Canada. As lead facilitator for Enbridge’s Savings By Design energy conservation program, he delivered sustainable design workshops for over 100 major developments across Ontario. Ranson has consulted for numerous private and public sector organizations in Canada and internationally with a focus on capacity building and strategic planning for sustainable development, climate change mitigation and resilience outcomes.
YA’EL SANTOPINTO Associate, ERA Architects Santopinto is the Director of Research and Partnerships at the Centre for Urban Growth and Renewal (CUG+R), advocating for supportive policy frameworks around the preservation of Canada’s affordable apartment housing supply. This work includes policy advocacy to support best practices, ranging from retrofit standards to planning policy and green financing. She is also a registered architect with ERA Architects, and is Project Architect on the landmark Passive House retrofit and renewal of a Hamilton apartment tower, as well as several building- and site-rehabilitation projects on postwar apartment towers across the region.
GRAEME STEWART Principal, ERA Architects A Toronto-based architect and urban planner, Stewart contributes to many of the region’s leading urban design, cultural planning, and revitalization projects. He is also a founding director of the Centre for Urban Growth and Renewal (CUG+R), an interdisciplinary urban research organization. Working with NGOs, academic, government, and community partners, CUG+R supports policy and action toward more equitable and resilient urban regions. The key focus of this work is Tower Renewal, a multisectoral initiative focused on the low-carbon future of the mid-century tower blocks throughout urban Canada. Stewart is a member of the Toronto Community Housing Design Review Panel and a lecturer in universities in Ontario and abroad. He is also co-editor of Concrete Toronto: A Guidebook to Concrete Architecture from the Fifties to the Seventies, and in 2014 received the Jane Jacobs Prize for his ongoing research and design work related to Tower Renewal.

ERIC LACROIX, STI Firestop Recognized for his firestop expertise, Lacroix has over 20 years’ experience on complex high-profile projects around the world. He works closely with inspectors, glazing contractors, and curtain wall consultants during the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of curtain wall projects. Previously, Lacroix was the STI Firestop Regional Manager for the Southeastern U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.
ANIK TEASDALE-ST. HILAIRE, Morrison Hershfield Anik is a Façade Specialist and Project Manager in Morrison Hershfield’s Façade Engineering group, focused on the design of cladding and glazing systems for projects throughout North America. Anik has worked on a variety of projects, including new construction, condition assessments, building envelope rehabilitation projects, and hygrothermal simulations of building envelope assemblies.
NEEL BAVISHI, Morrison Hershfield Neel is a Building Energy Consultant responsible for conducting whole building energy modelling to evaluate the performance of new and existing building designs. His experience includes the development of energy models for green building certification programs and carbon-neutral retrofit studies. He has contributed to the development of net zero energy and emissions policies through parametric modelling studies for municipal, provincial and federal government bodies.

As Architectural Market Manager, Advanced Interlayers for Laminated Glass in the Americas, Ondrus works with architects, specifiers, engineers, consultants, and designers as well as laminating customers, providing advanced yet practical interlayer solutions for laminated glass that meet project-specific performance and aesthetic needs for exterior and interior applications. He has over 25 years’ glass industry marketing and technical experience at the float glass, interlayer, specialty fabricator, and processing levels.

Workshops Presenters MICHAEL BOOTSMA Project and BIM Manager, PARTISANS Bootsma has worked internationally on projects including: the National Gallery of England, the University of Oxford Saïd, and renovations at Ontario Place for its phased re-opening, coordination of the Luminato Festival 2016 at the Hearn Generating Station, and building slated for occupancy by WeWork. He studied at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, receiving several awards, including the OAA Guild Medal for his graduate thesis.
MATT BYE Regional Technical Director, Maffeis Engineering Bye has served as project lead to a variety of residential, commercial, institutional, and facade projects and specializes in unique solutions to architectural challenges and advanced computational modeling and analysis techniques. TONY CURRIE Program Director, College of Carpenters and Allied Trades A Red Seal Carpenter with over 30 years’ construction and supervisory experience, Currie has concentrated the last four years on six-story wood and mass timber construction, with the focus on training. He is a is a graduate of York University, builds and restores wooden structures and barns in his spare time, and operates a working farm with his wife, Diana.

DAVID MOSES Principal, Moses Structural Engineer Moses attended Queen’s University for undergraduate and Master degrees, then went to Vancouver to pursue a PhD in timber engineering. After 10 years, he returned to Ontario and in 2010 launched his own company. Moses is a recognized leader, designer, teacher, researcher, writer, and lecturer. He has over 25 years’ experience in timber engineering and has been involved in hundreds of structural engineering projects across Canada and the U.S., including many firsts: the first Canadian and Ontario Cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings, the first passive house in Canada, and early CNC machining of heavy timber for construction.
MARINE SANCHEZ Passive House Specialist, RDH Part of Canada’s highly experienced Passive House professionals circle, Sanchez leads RDH’s Passive House consulting services in Ontario, focusing on large-scale, mixed-use projects. She is one of nine PHI-accredited Building Certifiers in Canada. Sanchez also supports the City of Toronto in the implementation of their Zero Emissions Buildings Framework, moving the industry towards the delivery of high-performance buildings.
BRYAN SCHOPF Regional Project Director, Maffeis Engineering Schopf has worked as a project management and design lead for many complex steel, wood, structural fabric, and film projects in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Bahrain. With a background in architecture, engineering, and manufacturing, he has participated in the initial conceptual design, complex modelling, and form-finding processes, fabrication, and construction documentation for many challenging and unique projects. KYLE SILLIKER Principal, Building Science Specialist, RDH Silliker consults on building enclosures for new construction, performs condition assessments and investigations of existing buildings, and assists with rehabilitation projects. He provides energy code compliance and energy retrofit services and has presented on the topic of energy efficiency in mid- and high-rise buildings.
Workshops Presenters HAYA SOGHRATI Engineering Leader, UL Having graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto with a B.A. Science–Building Science, Soghrati brings 11 years’ experience in low-rise and highrise building envelope design evaluation and testing. She is an NFRC-certified simulator with in-depth knowledge of small- and large-scale testing programs in accordance with various NRC/ CCMC, ASTM, CSA, NFRC, ULC, CGSB, and AAMA standards, with a focus on fenestration products, curtain wall systems, walls, airflow analysis, air barriers, and insulation materials. She is currently a member of AAMA, ASTM, CGSB, CSA A440, and ULC technical committees.
MARK VAN DALEN Business Development Manager, UL Applying over 30 years’ experience in consulting and testing in Eastern North America, Van Dalen works with building owners and managers to avoid or eliminate problems over the service life of their built environment assets. He has completed hundreds of investigations of envelope failures and has commissioned new envelope construction on such landmark, unique buildings in Canada as the National Gallery of Canada and the Bank of Canada Headquarters. Van Dalen has a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
MARCO VANDERMAAS Associate, Kirkor Architects & Planners From low- to high-rise, Vandermass serves as a resource for multi-unit residential and mixeduse commercial building design. Growing up in the Netherlands provided him with an appreciation of urban culture and gave him an acute understanding of urban density and the effect that it has on a community. In approaching the challenges of ever-changing build-
ing code regulations, he returns to previous experiences in yacht design and healthy off-the-grid home construction. Vandermass pursues his passion to utilize the recent changes to the Ontario Building Code in favour of six-story mid-rise wood-frame construction within urban growth centres while advocating for taller wood structures, mass timber, design for manufacturing, hybrid off-site construction, and new typologies.
IVAN VASYLIV Designer, PARTISANS Vasyliv joined PARTISANS in 2012, where his contributions in design, research, and fabrication have received global recognition and awards. He currently directs reseach and development at PARTISANS. He holds from Ryerson University an MBA from Ted Rogers School of Management , specializing in management of technology and innovation and also a Bachelor of Architectural Science.
MIKE YORKE President, Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario Yorke is a member of the Board of Directors of the College of Carpenters and Allied Trades, which oversees training and skills development. Recent focus has been to develop a training program for mass timber/ CLT as this sector grows. Former co-chair on the City of Toronto Youth Employment Action Plan (YEAP) Advisory Committee, Yorke sits as a citizen advisory board member of Civic Action Toronto and an editorial advisory board member of the Daily Commercial News, and an advisory board member of the Urban Land Institute, Toronto. He also plays an industry advisor role as a board member of the Ontario Construction Secretariat and the Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO), as well as the Ontario Cast in Place Concrete Development Council (OCCDC). Yorke is the recipient of the Wood Works Ontario Wood Champion Award, 2016.
