DIVISION OF SPACES HALEY HEITKAMP
DIVISION OF SPACES: THE SITE FOR THIS PROJECT IS AT THE BOTTOM OF OHIO AVE, ON A STREET CALLED CLIFF STREET. IT IS EXTREMELY STEEP, WITH APPROXIMATELY A 50-FOOT DROP FROM THE TOP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LOT. THERE ARE NOT MANY SURROUNDING BUILDINGS DUE TO THE SLOPE. WHEN DESIGNING, I WANTED THE SPACE ACCENTUATED AGAINST THE COLLAGE OF GREEN TREES SURROUNDING IT. WHEN LOOKING AT THIS PROJECT FROM VINE STREET, IT WILL APPEAR LIKE THERE IS A YELLOW FORM GROWING FROM WITHIN THE TREES. IT’S ABOUT THE DIVISION OF SPACE FROM THE SITE.
MASSING STUDY PROPORTIONS
BREAKING DOWN THE PROJECT EVEN FURTHER, THERE ARE 12 UNITS WITHIN THIS BUILDING. 3 OF WHICH ARE 2 BEDROOMS / 1 BATH, 3 THAT ARE 1 BEDROOM / 1 BATH, 3 STUDIO / 1 BATH, AND 3 ADA STUDIOS / 1 BATH. THE DIAGRAMS ABOVE SHOW THE BREAKDOWN OF THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS FROM THE TWO CIRCULATION CORES, THE PARKING STRUCTURE, AND THE PUBLIC SPACE. EACH OF THE BEDROOM TYPES IS STACKED ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER SO THAT THE FLOOR PLANS ARE THE SAME THROUGHOUT. THE ROOF CAPS THE TOP OF THE RESIDENTS AND HELPS TO DIVIDE THE BLOCKS FROM ONE ANOTHER.
FLOOR PLANS
THE 2 BED AND 1 BED CAP THE ENDS OF THE BUILDING THAT WAY ALL BEDROOMS CAN RECEIVE NATURAL LIGHT AND EGRESS IN CASE OF A FIRE EMERGENCY. THE TWO STUDIOS ARE IN THE CENTER SINCE THEY DON’T HAVE THE ABILITY TO HAVE EXTERIOR WINDOWS; HOWEVER, THEY DO CONTAIN CLERESTORY WINDOWS TO ENSURE THAT THOSE SPACES ARE STILL RECEIVING NATURAL LIGHT. THE YELLOW WALLS IN THE DRAWINGS ARE USED TO REPRESENT THE WATER WALLS. THESE ARE ALL INTERIOR WALLS SO NO EXTRA INSULATION IS NEEDED AND THEY STACK FLOOR TO FLOOR SO MECH. AND PLUMBING CAN BE FED THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.
