(MANAGED IMMIGRATION ISOLATION QUARANTINE STATION)
2022
This project constituted the culmination of a three-step endeavor. The objective was to conceive a ‘landmark’ structure for Wellington. The project’s brief was notably unrestrictive, affording me the latitude to engage in speculative design. I incorporated narrative elements to imbue the project with deeper significance and to elevate the articulation of my architectural vision. The M.I.I.Q Centre, envisioned for completion in the year 2141, serves as a conduit for interplanetary travel, facilitating the movement of extraterrestrial species between planets.

RE( CON )NOTATIONS CURRENT THESIS WORK
THE EDGE OF CHAOS 2023
Re(con)notations / The Edge of Chaos tackles New Zealand’s largest port by volume: the port of Tauranga. This thesis explores how an allegorical architectural project can cultivate a machine aesthetic to harmonize an industrial chaotic space of layered alternative typologies that can transform depending on shifts in the economic climate.
Re( con )notations
Layering will be used by investigating how alternative architectural typologies can harmoniously coexist. Typically, urban architecture expands outward; however, this thesis will treat the site like a palimpsest, allowing the layering of residential and commercial architecture to appear industrial. In order to achieve this, the architecture will be developed as an allegory to convey the contextual machine aesthetic around itself, additionally by embracing the vast area as an ever-changing dynamic zone. The architectural interventions can seamlessly adapt with relevance to the economic climate. Moving into or out of the industrial zone will provide more or less residential or commercial buildings.
“
Complex systems tend to locate themselves at a place we call ‘the edge of chaos.’ We imagine the edge of chaos as a place where there is enough innovation to keep a living system vibrant, and enough stability to keep it from collapsing into anarchy. It is a zone of conflict and upheaval, where the old and the new are constantly at war.

“Everywhere it is machines—real ones, not figurative ones: machines driving other machines, machines being driven by other machines, with all the necessary couplings and connections.” – 1

Didactic sentinels and guardians of the Taurnaga Port.
(re)IMAGINING MACHINES In previous reflections scale has been a large problem. With the port spanning five separate models in five different regions of the port. The aim of each of the five models is to replicate a process that occurs within the region or the fundamental site conditions. Therefore establishing a didactic architecture that allows users to learn about the micro scale of the port. And view the changes from section to section within the port. This change is also shown within the architecture itself whereby as the building crosses the duality zone between one port typology to the next the buildings showcase several of the duality acts. Furthering the users perception and understanding of the port space.

Each building additionally is framed by the one before and after it creating a link between the five buildings. Establishing a gateway of guardians and sentinels into the port of Tauranga.

CIVIC SQUARE DESIGN VERTICAL CLIMBING GYM 2022 The Civic Square redesign project afforded me the opportunity to re-imagine one of the earthquake-damaged structures within the vicinity. The project brief tasked me with the challenge of revitalizing Civic Square, transforming it into a vibrant and engaging space that had lost much of its vitality and activity. My vision centered on the creation of a vertical recreation center, a concept wherein the architectural design harmonized with the human perception of time during various vertical exercise activities. As one ascended the building, the programs gradually escalated in complexity and intensity, thus altering one’s perception of time. The architectural layout encompassed zones for activities such as trampolining, rock climbing, bouldering, bungee jumping, and more. A paramount aspect of the design was its commitment to sustainability. Leveraging state-of-the-art green materials, advanced ventilation systems, and innovative design techniques, the project was conceived to minimize operational costs and ensure the building’s long-term viability, culminating in a sustainable outcome. The project unfolded across four distinct phases: site analysis, design drivers, concept design, and developed design, each contributing to the realization of this transformative endeavor.

MAOAE ASO NEI WELLINGTON FALE MALAE 2021
The Maeoae Aso Nei project marked my inaugural venture into the integration of structure, design and program. The overarching objective was to conceive a cultural center, specifically a Fale Malae, intended to serve as a communal hub for all Pacific communities. The designated location for this Fale Malae was within the picturesque confines of Frank Kitts Park in Wellington. In crafting my design, I drew inspiration from the narrative of Pacific explorers, a source that enriched the project with a sense of historical and cultural context. This narrative served as a guiding force, informing the intricate and fluid design of the Fale Malae, thus imbuing it with a deeper layer of meaning and significance.

Polynesian Way-finders
Exploring the Contrast Between Tradition and Modernity, and the Interplay Between Them As noted by archaeologist Atholl Anderson, the double spritsail emerged as the most probable sailing rig employed by the Polynesian voyagers who arrived Speculative in New drawing Zealand during the 13th century. These canoes were primarily propelled by specifically through the use of oars. Traditional vs thehuman modern and effort, the space between them. traveling how we now vscarries ealy 1200 centry This traditional mode ofmove travel profound historical significance and can serve asMassing, a source ofpeople inspiration for600 contemporary design concepts. It how many fit inside a space people etc offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the past and the moving, the lines back like the moari with when the mountain is moved the river is left behind, therefore when present, allowing a meaningful reconnection of these distinct eras. the linesfor are moved here it creates a trail or entrance.
Merging Origin Concepts With Contemporary Elements Leveraging the Graceful Motion of Pacific Explorers for Contemporary Design Harnessing the inherent fluidity of movement associated with Pacific explorers provides a compelling foundation for contemporary design. This concept serves as a metaphorical bridge, concealing the islands that were once the ancestral homelands of Pasifika people before the arrival of European colonizers.
Traditional vs Modern
Diagnosing the “uamea” - Samoan Ore Through the utilization of video analysis, the intricate motions involved in rotating the Uamea can be dissected and examined. This analysis serves as a valuable resource for the generation of captivating architectural shapes, both in terms of plan and elevation. These forms can then be refined and extended to yield a fluid and contemporary architectural design, mirroring the rhythmic repetition inherent in the act of rowing. The resultant plan and elevation configurations, when positioned in their respective orientations, can be seamlessly incorporated into a facade treatment, serving as a unifying element that encapsulates the essence of fluidity. TOKYO ECO - TOWER CORE AND FACADE DESIGN
This two-part project was meticulously crafted to impart the essential skills of designing the structural core and facades within larger buildings. ECO-Tower stands as an exemplar of sustainable wooden architecture nestled in the vibrant heart of Tokyo. This innovative structure seamlessly blends the functionalities of residential apartments, office spaces, and ground-level retail stores. A notable feature of this architectural marvel is the expansive open thoroughfare that gracefully intersects between Tsukiji Street and Akashicho Street. This strategic design element not only enhances foot traffic for the ground-level retail establishments but also offers direct accessibility to elevators and staircases, ensuring seamless connectivity and convenience for all occupants and visitors alike.
