OVERVIEW

Within This Page Overview

The Co mmunity Services building type is distinguished by the wide range o f different facility types that fall under it. While all Emerging Issues Co mmunity Services facilities share a co mmo n purpo se in the Classification service o f public needs, each facility is very specialized and the functio nal requirements are extremely varied. Fo r example, facilities such as museums, visito r centers, and yo uth centers are recreatio nal in nature, acco mmo date the general public, and are o pen and welco ming in design character. Ho wever, facilities such as po lice and fire statio ns, while so metimes being partially o pen to the public, co mprise many spaces that are intended to be o ccupied o nly by highly trained pro fessio nals. Spaces such as the fo llo wing will represent unsafe o r high-risk areas to the general public:

Therefo re, the design and functio nal layo ut o f these facilities will vary widely. If there is o ne unifying theme to these building types, it is that the exterio r architectural message sho uld respect the cultural tastes and histo ry o f the co mmunity served. BACK TO TO P

EMERGING ISSUES As with all public buildings and buildings with a 24-ho ur staff, several design issues have gained increased attentio n o ver recent years: Quality o f life issues fo r staff, particularly o vernight staff, and health and safety co ncerns fo r patro ns drive issues such as daylighting, the specificatio n o f no n-to xic building materials, and the quality o f finishes and the enviro nment they create; Anti-terro rism/fo rce pro tectio n measures are vital to pro tect life, pro tect physical assets, and to maintain o peratio ns in critical co mmunity service facilities such as po lice and fire statio ns; PDFmyURL.com
