6920 ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST Are you a high school student? Are you a great speaker? The local Rotary District 6920 will host a speech competition for high school students. Speeches are to be between 3 and 4 minutes, with limited notes, about Rotary with the national president’s theme “Be a Gift to the World” or Rotary’s 4-Way test. The competition will be held on Monday, February 22, 9:00 am on the first floor of the conference room of the Enterprise Mill located at 1450 Greene Street. A first, second, and third place winner will be selected locally. Local prizes will be available and the winner’s speech will be given at the District Conference in May. Winners at the local level will have a chance to compete for $1,000 in scholarship at the Zone contest in March 2016. PROGRAMMING JANUARY TO MARCH 2016 Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm JANUARY 2016 Date and time to be announced The Lowell of the South: How the Canal Shaped Augusta’s Manufacturing History A seven-mile, man-made waterway, envisioned by Henry H. Cumming to place Augusta on the map as a manufacturing center of the South, rivalling industrial towns of the North, particularly Lowell, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, the Augusta Canal has given the city an identity since its construction in 1845. Representatives from the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area will be here to discuss its history, from the early days as a source of water, power, and transportation to its current status as the only intact industrial canal in the American South in continuous use. In some of the same ways you research men but you also have to consider what documents and items were left behind by women. In honor of Women’s History Month, the Georgia Heritage Room will host this free Legacy Family Tree webinar with genealogist and women’s history scholar, Ms. Gena Philibert-Ortega. ONGOING CLASSES The Georgia Heritage Room offers free basic genealogy tutorials for the budding family historian. Many of the resources are Web-based so rudimentary computer skills are required. In the session, we will learn the fundamental rules of research and how to access the various resources necessary to tell your family’s story. Participants will also how to fill out a Pedigree Chart and Family Group worksheet, the building blocks of genealogical research. A PERSONAL POSTAL HISTORY The Georgia Heritage Room presents a postal history in historic covers and commemorative stamps. A COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE BOOKS If you missed our rare book exhibit last February you’re in luck, it’s back. Thanks to the generosity of book collector and historian, Elvin Thompson, the Georgia Heritage Room has the honor of once again displaying this wonderful collection of antique books. Many of this year’s books are new to Mr. Thompson’s collection so were not on display last year. Included are early editions of such poignant classics as Uncle Remus and His Friends by Joel Chandler Harris and Native Son by Richard Wright, as well as first edition copies of The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass and Uncle Tom’s Cabin or Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
