Local author, Robert Mullins will be here to discuss his recently published book 12 Monkeys & A Green Jacket, which explores the history of Augusta within the context of its once pristine and popular resort areas, Lake Olmstead. Tuesday, February 17 2:00 p.m. Overcoming Roadblocks in African American Genealogy: Elvin Thompson Elvin Thompson is the author of The Blood Running Through my Veins, the story of the Burns family from the slave plantations of Autauga County, Alabama until today. Mr. Thompson specializes in tracing African American families. The workshop will cover a wide variety of topics for both the novice and advanced genealogist.

Saturday, February 28 11:00 a.m. Slave Songs of Augusta: Bob Hester with Musical Accompaniment by Creative Impressions As part of a thesis project to complete his music degree at ASU, Bob Hester explored the origins of five slave spirituals from Augusta included in the 1867 anthology Slave Songs of the United States. Mr. Hester will discuss his research and findings, and local African American choral group, Creative Impressions, will perform from the repertoire. Thursday, March 15 2:00 p.m. Guarding Women: Deviance, Crime and Female Imprisonment Join Allison Foley, PhD. Associate Professor of Sociology at GRU, as she discusses her work involving gender and crime. Dr. Foley’s presentation will focus on female offenders, the history of women’s prisons and the death penalty. All programs are free and open to the public. February Antique Book Collection on Display Elvin Thompson In honor of Black History Month, the Georgia Heritage Room will exhibit a collection of rare and antique books on African American history. The books have been selected from the Elvin Thompson collection, a local genealogist and historian, who devotes much of his time to promoting and exploring the convergence of history and genealogy through his activities as a researcher, speaker and author. March Spirit of the Centuries St. John United Methodist Church St. John United Methodist Church historic and current documents from the original Methodist Church in Augusta founded in 1798.
