Red Cross “Everyday Heroes”

Since 1943, March has been proclaimed as Red Cross Month across the United States, a tradition begun by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This year during Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross is recognizing the country’s Everyday Heroes – heroes who reach out to help people in need. The Sigonella American Red Cross would like to take this opportunity to recognize Sigonella’s Everyday Heroes who in some way help the community ——by giving of themselves. Lt. Kristy Carpenter from the NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center has excelled as the NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Command Suicide Prevention Coordinator. She established a Suicide Survivors blog on Facebook that has attained 6,900 followers to date that provides a resource to those affected by Suicide. She also serves as a SAPR Victim Advocate where she has shown that she is both compassionate and supportive in assisting those she has advocated for. Besides these activities she has DEDICATING countless hours and resources to the Combined Federal Campaign, Wounded Warrior Project, Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Box Tops for Education, Smile Train, and the Sigonella Parent-Teacher Organization. Because of this is Lt. Carpenter is an American Red Cross Everyday Hero. YN1 Eduardo Clemente from Patrol Squadron Nine has distinguished himself above and beyond his peers in his dedication to the community especially being in a deployed environment. He has participated in numerous volunteer opportunities in the local community including the Catania Soup and participating in VIP Static Displays. He also became trained as a VITA tax representative to assist service members with tax questions. His command seeks him out to serve as an Italian translator which has been invaluable to cultivating community relations. Because of this YN1 Clemente is an American Red Cross Everyday Hero.

ABH1 Shawn Conway from NASSIG Air Operations Transient Line epitomizes what it means to be selfless. He serves as the DEFY program coordinator, leading 10 counselors in the mentoring of over 50 children on healthy living and drug education. In addition, he is an active leader of the current Active Duty Fund Drive for the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society. He attends all the events to ensure a smooth and timely fundraiser is conducted often working 6-7 days a week. Because of this ABH1 Shawn Conway is an American Red Cross Everyday Hero.

TSgt Jeremy Thatcher from Detachment 2, Global Hawks has displayed unrelenting compassionate assistance to the local community from the moment he arrived in 2010. He has volunteered over 500 hours to Sigonella and the local community through local church painting projects, beautification projects, and ceremonies including being known as THE “Go To Guy” for the Navy Marine Corp Relief Society as a delivery drive. These activities and more have shined a positive light on Sigonella and the United States Air Force. Because of this TSgt Jeremy Thatcher is an American Red Cross Everyday Hero. SSgt Lionel Blunt from Detachment 2, Global Hawks strongest traits according to his peers are his ability to be open-minded and selfless in any situation before him. He has dedicated 100+ hours this past year in volunteer work. He co-led the 4th of July Kids’ Bouncy Houses which accumulated nearly $1200 in funds for the Global Hawk Booster Club and as well as the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR). Safety and security are a priority for him and as such he spearheaded the 1st National Night Out and continued his devotion into the 2nd Annual National Night Out. Because of this SSgt Lionel Blunt is an American Red Cross Everyday Hero.
