A4.1 SITTING, ORIENTATION AND DESIGN
ARDALAN EDDIE MASTOORI

Living room, kitchen and dining are facing to the north which can have benefit north sun heat and light in winter. Also the north sun lighten up and heat up the main bedroom with ensuit. The problem with the large window facing north was the heat in summer which with a 1800mm length automatic louvre shading is solved. the other two bedrooms are locating to the south which is the best orientation for bedrooms because they are used mostly during sleep time. also two windows are located in these two rooms for ventilation and also having light. Laundary is positioned in west side which lighting, heating and cooling is not very important in these areas. In south, the ensuit and bathroom are located which mostly ventilation in these area are more important than heating. To be more detailed, a 400mm deep pool is located in front of the north face facade which cools down the hot wind coming from north in summer and also as in Melbourne, we have a cold wind coming from the ocean in south, vegitation is planted (trees) to block this wind. Just in case, in north windows thick blinds are installed for covering them for internal shading in summer and a layer to blocks the cold weather coming out of the double glazed windows. also, these blinds are installed in other sides (south, east and west) to block the cold wave coming out of double glaze window. In this house, I tried to minimise the number of the windows or minimising the size due to the reason that even non-insulated wall is better than having a double glazed window. The House has butterfly roof with bulk insulation and double sided foil in two different levels which, in large part of the roof (facing north), 8 automatic pv panels are installed to provide the electricity. These pv panels are adjustable which means in the summer they will have 30 degrees angle for maximising the benefit of the sun and in winter, 45 degrees which is due to having sun at this degree. The smaller part of the roof, allows us to have a larger windows in north facade and also the slope helps us to collect the rainwater with wet system from both site in the tank. External walls are reverse brick veneer with double insulation of rock wool and cellulose with 292mm thickness that the inside will perform as a thermal mass. The foundation is concrete slab on the ground which is highly insulated with rigid insulation due to high percentage of heat loss from ground. Also the same principle as external walls applied to the slab which will perform as a thermal mass to keep the internal heat. GSEducationalVersion GSPublisherEngine 446.62.63.100
