Arkansas DECA Welcomes Jacob Oliva as
Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Educa on Oliva began as secretary on January 10, 2023 a er his appointment by Arkansas Governor, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. The Arkansas State Board of Educa on also selected Oliva as commissioner of ADE’s Division of Elementary and Secondary Educa on on January 12, 2023.
Prior to being named secretary and commissioner, Oliva served in numerous roles at the Florida Department of Educa on, most recently as interim commissioner. He joined the Florida department as execu ve vicechancellor of the Public Schools Division in 2017 and became chancellor in 2019, where his division supported more than 2.8 million students in approximately 3,600 Florida public schools.
In 2021, he was promoted to senior chancellor, and his responsibili es expanded to include early learning, school choice programs, school safety, and school accountability. Addi onally, he encouraged statewide leadership and communicaon between the Florida Department of Educa on and the state’s school districts.
Oliva is a graduate of Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Flagler College in Florida. He began his educa onal career more than two decades ago as an elementary teacher for students with special needs. He later served as a principal at both the elementary and high school levels and as an assistant superintendent and superintendent of Flagler County Schools.

Mr. White is the Director of Career and Technical Education for the State of Arkansas. Prior to working at the Arkansas Department of Education, Mr. White began his career in education at Alma School District where he was a member of the career development and marketing faculty. His career lead him to Siloam Springs High School as vice-principal and CTE program director. Mr. White’s educational path includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Education from Arkansas Tech University at Russellville, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Arkansas Tech University at Russellville, and an Education Specialist in Educational Leadership degree from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Mr. White is a member of several professional organizations, including the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators, Arkansas Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators, and Arkansas Association for Career and Technical Education. He currently serves as a board member for the Arkansas Tech University Alumni Board.
Dede Hamm is a hospitality management professor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She started her career in event planning and management before moving to higher education in hospitality. It was her knowledge and skill in events that brought her to Make-A-Wish in Northwest Arkansas. She hopes to provide assistance with the region's fundraising events to help wish kids in our area. Mrs, Hamm is a NWA Regional Board Member for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Justin Petron is a Regional Recruiter for Fastenal and workforce development advocate with over 10 years of accumulated experience in aviation and industrial distribution. After realizing college wasn’t a good fit for him, Justin joined Afterglow Aircraft Solutions in 2013 where he learned the true meaning of hard work and labor. He wore many different hats and gained experience in management, supply chain, automotive painting, interior refurbishment, adjustments and general aviation knowledge. In 2018, Justin shifted his focus towards general industry and industrial distribution, and joined the Fastenal “Blue Team”. At Fastenal, Justin has held positions in Construction Sales, Outside Sales, Inside Sales, and most recently shifted into the HR sector as a Regional Recruiter over AR, OK, KS, MO, and NM. Justin is also a member of the Board of Directors of Arkansas Association for Colleges and Employers (AACE) and a Committee Member of Oklahoma Association for Colleges and Employers (OkACE). Justin lives in Springdale AR with his wife Amie, and in his spare time enjoys singing, playing guitar, watching Marvel movies, and serving at his local church
