A Message
From our Production Sponsor Harmelin Media is thrilled to continue our long-time support of Arden Theatre Company. For over 20 years, Harmelin has been a supporter of the Arden, helping to bring great stories by great storytellers to life onstage for audiences of all ages. The Arden produces theatre that delights audiences, challenges perceptions, and above all reminds us of what it means to be human. Harmelin’s commitment to the Arden goes beyond the stage, supporting the Arden’s education program in public schools, Arden for All. Harmelin recognizes the true value that the Arden brings to the community goes beyond storytelling and ensures future generations will continue to have the opportunity to experience the power of live theatre. Harmelin is proud to sponsor the final show of the 2022 season. One of Sondheim’s most beloved musicals returns to the F. Otto Hass stage with a magical radiance. Into the Woods explores the journey to the fairy tales’ happy ending – and the responsibilities that come with happily ever after.” Into the Woods is particularly relevant now, as we all work to learn from these past two years and come “out of the woods” together.
WELCOME
From the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to Into the Woods and the final production of this season – a celebration of storytelling and the power of music to open our hearts as well as renew our spirit.
Today, we celebrate the extraordinary artistry of Stephen Sondheim whose work we have returned to again and again throughout Arden’s history. Stephen Sondheim was the recipient of the Arden’s inaugural Master Storyteller Award, presented in 2015. It was a remarkable night for this company, made even more so when a power outage led us to hold the award ceremony in our set shop in the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Through sheer ingenuity, collaboration, and grit, we honored Stephen Sondheim on a makeshift stage of table saws and work benches lashed together – and he was absolutely delighted. This June, we bestow our second Master Storyteller Award to Philadelphia writer, Lorene Cary, who has told stories through fiction, nonfiction, journalism, opera and, most recently, theatre with the premiere of My General Tubman. Lorene has also shaped the story of our city in powerful ways: founding Art Sanctuary, serving on the School Reform Commission for the School District of Philadelphia, creating #VoteThatJawn, among many other accomplishments. She is truly a hero and we are inspired by how she uses her extraordinary gifts to let us revisit the past, honor the present, and envision a better future. With this production, we are also celebrating the creation of the Dr. Mindy Goldberg Rose Internship Program, named in memory of our beloved friend, Mindy Goldberg Rose. Through this program, we will be able to serve young professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in the arts – and we will be able to pay them, opening these opportunities to even more people and furthering Mindy’s commitment to education, the arts, and mentoring young people. We are grateful to her husband Charlie and her family for remembering Mindy in this powerful way. As Charlie said to me, “Everybody Mindy met, she made their lives better.” She made our lives better and through the Dr. Mindy Goldberg Rose Intern Program, she will continue to enrich the lives of young people for many, many years to come. The Arden has been so fortunate to be shaped and sustained by so many extraordinary people. Thank you for being part of the Arden – and for celebrating all we have to celebrate right now. We may still be finding our way out of the woods some days, but we are grateful that you are part of the journey.
P.S. Next year is the Arden’s 35th Anniversary Season. Please be a part of it!
Stephen Sondheim: 1930-2021 In 1993, we mounted SWEENEY TODD at St. Stephen’s Alley - the first time we brought Sondheim's work to our stage. This incarnation of INTO THE WOODS marks the 14th time a Stephen Sondheim musical will be produced here at the Arden. We honor his memory and are indebted to him for the stories he brought to musical life and for his audacity, artistry, and generosity.
Director's Note Stephen Sondheim is one of my heroes. I’ve been consumed by his work since I was a teenager when I first experienced the tour of Sweeney Todd here in Philadelphia in 1980. I saw that production a dozen times (or at least Act 2 when I would sneak in at intermission), determined to understand why it moved me so. And then I met Follies and Merrily We Roll Along and Company. Later, Pacific Overtures, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, and the others. Listening to those original cast recordings and seeing these musicals whether on Broadway or at a community theatre, with each and every experience, my understanding and commitment to the power and possibility of musical theatre continued to grow. Sweeney Todd was the first Sondheim musical I directed at the Arden. We were in our fourth season – still such a young company – yet our passion for his work inspired us, creating what remains a landmark production in our history. Other Sondheim musicals followed, including Merrily We Roll Along as the inaugural musical on the F. Otto Haas Stage. Throughout, I continued to be shaped by Sondheim’s work. About ten years ago, I was invited to interview Sondheim at Wilmington’s Grand Opera House in front of a live audience and, in doing so, I realized that what I loved about his work was also true of the person: he was passionate and rigorous; witty and charming and brilliantly erudite. His entire being seemed focused on finding and conveying the truth. Though he always claimed that his musicals were not autobiographical, he had poured so much of himself into these stories – combining his astonishing musical gifts with his tremendous facility with language and his deep insight into what it means to be human in a complex and often contradictory world. Right before the interview, I got a call from his lawyer, instructing me not to gush because that made Sondheim uncomfortable; rather, he asked me to treat him as a fellow professional and get to work. Of course, that is what I did, but as we continued to talk over the years and throughout our Master Storyteller Award event in 2015, I hope I conveyed how profoundly he had influenced and inspired me. I met Sondheim at such pivotal times in my life - through his work in my formative years, as a young director seeking to find my own voice, and as an adult, with gratitude and reverence for all that he had done. Stephen Sondheim’s work will be produced for generations to come, and through that work, so many people will also have the chance to meet their hero.

We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. The Arden has received twelve Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, six City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 77 awards and 418 nominations from the Theatre Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. Arden Theatre Company, a professional, nonprofit 501(c)(3) theatre company, is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the League of Resident Theatres, Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Old City Arts Association.
generous supporters of the Arden's 2022 Granfalloon! As we return to one of the Arden's favorite traditions, we celebrate our honorees, Lorene Cary and Bob Elfant, rejoice in the return of live theatre, as well as commemorate the resilience of Old City and the spirit of Philadelphia artists. Here's to more great stories on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community!
