WELCOME From the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to the Philadelphia premiere of Jocelyn Bioh's School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play, featuring an all-Philadelphian cast and artistic team led by Amina Robinson, one of the city's leading theatre artists and educators. We are thrilled to have this extraordinary group of artists come together to bring this brilliant new play to life. And thank you for making this possible. Whether this is your first time back at the Arden – or if you saw Backing Track or A Streetcar Named Desire – thank you for being part of our return to live performance. We are all still juggling the ups and downs and uncertainty of this time, so I am inspired and grateful that you have chosen to be here. As we continue with our 2022 spring season and look forward to a celebratory production of Into the Woods, we are deep into planning for next year. We will open our 2022/23 season with Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, the first time in our history that we produced this radiant and powerful play. We will follow that with a return engagement of Scott Greer in Every Brilliant Thing, a theatrical event that is different each and every night. The new year will welcome the regional premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage's Clyde's, a blistering comedy set in the kitchen of a truck stop just outside of Scranton, PA. Next up will be August Wilson's Radio Golf, the last chapter of his monumental ten-part series, The American Century Cycle, set in the Hill District of Pittsburgh in the 1990's. And we will close the season with the musical Violet, featuring a brilliant score by Jeanine Tesori, who wrote Caroline, or Change, Fun Home, and Kimberly Akimbo – a new musical that will appear on Broadway this fall. Next season will also include the return of Arden Children's Theatre – with two productions that will fill our spaces with joy, connection and creativity. Also, First World Theatre Ensemble will be in residence in the Bob and Selma Studio Theatre, with plans to produce two new productions. Stay tuned for details in the coming months! This will be the Arden's 35th Anniversary Season. A wide range of stories brought to life on our three stages. We will be back for a full season of live theatre! Thank you for being part of the Arden. Some of you have been subscribers for decades; many of you stood with us over the past two years (for which we are truly grateful); and some are joining us for the first time. But all of you make the Arden the theatre it is today – and the theatre we will be as we look to the future. Please come back as we journey Into the Woods. And join us for the Arden's 35th Anniversary Season.

A Message

From our Honorary Producers

Welcome to School Girls; Or,The African Mean Girls Play! As members of the Old City community, it is a joy to have the Arden in our backyard and to see it coming back strong this season. The Arden's commitment to telling great stories by great, diverse, and sometimes underappreciated storytellers on its stage draws people from across Philadelphia to our neighborhood which adds to the vibrancy of the community. As this third production of the season opens against the backdrop of another Covid surge, we are most grateful for the Arden's continued resilience. Now that the stage lights are back on, please check out every play this season. School Girls; Or,The African Mean Girls Play is the perfect production for this moment because it confronts serious issues with the kind of insights that are best revealed with humor. We hope that Jocelyn Bioh's poignant story of colorism and relationships among school girls at an elite African boarding school will explore new and familiar themes for you. Given the response this up-andcoming playwright's work has received across the country, we couldn't be more excited about her Philadelphia debut. Enjoy the play! Risa and Bob Lavizzo-Mourey

Arden Theatre Company Announces Dedication and Opening of the J. Cooper Robb Library We are pleased to announce the opening of the new J. Cooper Robb Library, located on the second floor of the Arden’s Hamilton Family Arts Center. Designed by acclaimed set designer James Kronzer in collaboration with architect Richard Maimon and built in the Arden workshop under the leadership of Glenn Perlman and the Arden’s Production staff, the library is dedicated to Robb, a long time theater critic for a variety of Philadelphia publications, and his impact on this theatre community. The J. Cooper Robb Library intended to be, first and foremost, a place where students learn, enjoy, and broaden their love and knowledge of theatre in its most basic form: the written word. Robb’s husband, Carl Karter, has donated Robb’s extensive collection of books, scripts and playbills to the library, and these materials will be shared with visitors and students for many years to come. In addition, other Arden supporters have donated materials to the library. Robb, a Newtown, Pennsylvania resident, was a freelance writer who reviewed theatrical productions for Philadelphia Weekly, Chestnut Hill Local, TheaterMania, and Backstage Magazine. He served as an adjunct professor at Bucks County Community College, Rider University, and Thomas Edison State University. Additionally, Robb served as a judge for Theatre Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards, and was a nominator for the F. Otto Haas Award, which recognizes emerging talent in the region’s theater community. J. Cooper Robb's impact can still be felt throughout the theatre world in Philadelphia. We hope the J. Cooper Robb Library will be a living legacy and inspiration to the next generation.

Creating the art for School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play In the spring of 2021, the Arden commissioned the Ghanaian painter Theophilus Tetteh to create the key art for School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play. Theo included us in every step of his creation, and now we are delighted to have the opportunity to share the process with our audiences.

Theophilus Tetteh - School Girls, 2021

I am Theophilus Tetteh with the brush name Niiodai. I am a Ghanaian who currently resides in Accra. I am an impressionist artist who works with acrylic paints on canvas. My art is basically a self-expression of how I feel and what I feel. With a first glance at my work, there are some specific techniques, which stands out. This includes: Blue highlights on the eyes, Yellow skin and textured and thick clothing's. This techniques are targeted at drawing my viewers into each character's unique personality and attitude through their gaze, mood and vibe.

In current times, I have come to love drawing youths, most especially Black youths and close friends. This is linked to what I can personally feel through their eyes. I can feel the heat, vibrancy, enthusiasm, energy and their positivity to make the world a better place. I am of view that, though the youth seek change, there is still a need for good counsel, good reflection, good thought and understanding from rightful sources. This world can be a better place if the youth are guided on their quest without any form of intimidation and disregard. As a conveyer, my priority is to make the world become a better place through my art. ” Manifesto published on www.saatchiart.com/theophilustetteh
