Ardo’s production, packing & distribution sites are located from north to south and from east to west in Europe’s most fertile crop growing regions. The close proximity of our factories to our crops is one of our key strengths and ensures that only minutes are lost between harvest and locking in the product’s natural goodness in our freezers.

Quality is the cornerstone of our corporate strategy

Field management Ardo works together with over 3 500 farmers to grow 87 crops on 50 000 ha in 9 countries. We produce frozen vegetables, herbs and fruit that are grown with the maximum respect for nature and the environment. Therefore we work pro-actively towards more sustainable agricultural production methods, whilst at the same time remaining commercially competitive. We strive to minimize the impact of our growing and processing activities on the environment, and we ensure at the same time the personal safety and life quality of our farmers and employees. This approach is summarized in our MIMOSA program - Minimum Impact with Maximum Output Sustainable Agriculture.

Production Our aim is to deliver our ingredients in the same state that Mother Nature intended: fresh, nutritious and picked at peak ripeness in the crop’s natural season. Applying integrated crop management and production techniques, and focussing on quality assurance and high ethical standards, we control the product from seed to customer. We installed in our factories new state-of-the-art packing lines with recent technology for metal detection and colour-, shape- and density sorting.


CLASSICS Our agricultural departments care for the crops until they are delivered to our processing sites where our Quality Assurance teams take over and monitor raw materials, production processes, product selection and packing. Our objective is to supply our customers with products that meet the highest safety and quality standards. Our production sites are certified to internationally recognised standards (BRC / IFS) that in turn provide a platform for the more demanding Ardo group standards.

CARBOHYDRATES

Customised products and a precise response to the needs of our various customers provide the secret of success in this challenging food business market. To acquire this knowledge they accompany our agronomists on field visits and undertake training in the production processes in our factories.

Protecting soil health through crop rotation

Ardo works closely with growers‘ associations to match products to consumer wishes. The growers‘ associations work with Ardo to continuously develop more sustainable cultivation methods. This ensures that Ardo produces fresh-frozen vegetables with the greatest possible respect for nature and the environment. Together we strive every day to carry out the MIMOSA programme. MIMOSA stands for Minimum Impact and Maximum Output Sustainable Agriculture.

What does this mean? SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE In everything we do, we consider the impact on the environment and people. We do all in our power to minimise any impact. MINIMUM IMPACT We try to make optimum use of all resources: seeds, herbicides and pesticides, fertilizers, irrigation water, etc. MAXIMUM OUTPUT To continue realising this ambition in the long term, we must pay attention to staying competitive and strive for maximum output in both volume and quality.

CLASSICS • The seed for the vegetables is selected and purchased by the agronomists. By selecting and sowing only the best seed, we significantly improve the chances of a successful crop. • Large-scale field trials are carried out to determine the optimal sowing density for major crops. • Fertilizers and irrigation need to be matched to the needs of the plants, which is why soil samples and moisture level measurements are important. • The agronomists and growers regularly inspect the fields for weeds, diseases and insect infestations. Where necessary, herbicides and insecticides are used judiciously.

• A corporate R&D programme to study and test new methods and technologies (mainly for extensive or machine-harvested crops such as peas, beans, carrots and spinach); • Helping local agronomists (now around 50 in number) be creative and proactive in developing sustainable solutions (for all crops, including intensively/manually harvested crops). A FEW EXAMPLES • The agronomists select the growers who will cultivate the right crops in the right soil, in order to ensure that our production facilities receive the desired quantities with the right quality at the right time.

Ardo Shines Ardo challenges the existing high levels of operational hygiene across the company’s 20 European production sites, where it freezes, packs and stores frozen vegetables, fruit and herbs. Starting with an investigation into areas where potential improvements could be made – guided by an external consultant conversant with EHEDG (European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group) principles, Ardo established a staged, multi-dimensional approach to introduce targeted changes across each of its production units. The project, named SHINE (food Safety and Hygiene IN Evolution) covers five main pillars:

CLASSICS CARBOHYDRATES

The initiative was taken to coach Ardo’s building and equipment suppliers and educate them in the principles of hygienic design and the need for improved access for cleaning. Today, all new engineering projects and investments in the Ardo Group incorporate hygienic principles, where floors, drains, walls, ceilings and ventilation are considered, together with the machines and equipment that handle and process the food.

PUREES

In cooperation with the Group’s engineering and quality departments, the local Ardo site directors, the local engineering and the local quality departments of the different sites review their organisational structures to accommodate the project. At Group level, a Food Technologist has been appointed to coordinate activities in cleaning/sanitation and monitoring, with a first task of creating a microbial database of all products at all Ardo factories on all production and packing lines.

This catalogue was printed on Cocoon Offset. This 100% recycled paper bears the FSCÂŽ (Forest Stewardship Council) Recycled certificate symbol and is EU Ecolabel certified. FSC certification provides assurance that wood-based products are sourced from responsibly managed, sustainable forests. During the FSC certification the origin of the product is verified together with the complete commercial chain up to the end user. By opting for this sustainable kind of paper, 317 kg of waste paper got a new lease of life, and 515 kg of timber was spared. The shorter production process of recycled paper yielded - specifically for this catalogue - a saving of 8 989 litres of water and 505 kWh of energy while the emissions were reduced by 46 kg of CO2. The printing inks used for this catalogue are vegetable based-inks. These are inks where the mineral oil fraction is replaced by vegetable oils.
