WEDNESDAY, 4 JULY CAMP CASEY HANSON OUTDOOR POOL & PARKING LOT
COL Brandon D. Newton Last Garrison Commander for USAG Red Cloud and Area 1.
Question: Col Newton, tell us what you enjoyed most about your assignment? Answer: I enjoyed leading the Garrison’s Soldiers, KATUSAs and Civilians through all the trainings of our “Theater Exercises.” Question: Col Newton, what did you find the most challenging as the Garrison Commander? Answer: What I found most challenging was- the, balancing of resources, assets and personnel throughout our constant changes with Transformation, Combining of both Area 1 & 2 communities and the ‘In and Out’ of Rotational Warfighters. We, also, experienced the impact of reduction and departure of our Civilian workforce; all the while- still maintain and providing the same level ‘support-excellence’ to our Soldiers and Units. Question: Col Newton, what recommendations can you give the Garrison Team as you depart? Answer: Always remain focused on the reason for our mission, which is to support our Combat Units at remaining physically and mentally fit, so they are are prepared to “Fight Tonight” Question: Col Newton, so where are you and the family “Jet Setting Off” to, as your new Assignment? Answer: We are “Jet Setting Off” to Denver Colorado, where I will be the Defense Coordination Officer for US Army North. Question: Col Newton, who would you say was the best looking Family and MWR Director you have had the opportunity to work with? Answer: ‘Really,’ you are asking me that? It’s pretty obvious to me and most of the community, that, you ‘Jammie’ are the best looking FMWR Director that we’ve all ever worked with; and Jeff Wertz runs a pretty close #2. Question: On a last note, what would you like to say to your USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 family and community, as you depart Korea? Answer: I sincerely want to say- it’s been one of the most satisfying and enjoyable opportunities I’ve ever had to serve with a group of talented, passionate and capable people; who ‘day in and day out’ support and accomplish the mission throughout all the Camps and Sites within the northern areas of South Korea. Jammie: Col Newton, you’ve been a breath of fresh air for USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 and an awesome Commander to work with. I wish you and the family ‘Bon Voyage’ and hope our paths cross again! Col Newton: Thank you Jammie and to the rest of USAG Red Cloud and Area 1, thank you for making my job as the Commander, one of the very best experiences of my career…. “So long!”

From your Family and MWR Director Hello Area 1 and 2 Community Members, Welcome to our Swank combined MWR “ITZ” magazine; incorporating the newest, greatest and latest scheduled programs, special events, services and much more. So as you look at the book, you will notice that Area 1 MWR programs are “upside right” and the Area 2 MWR programs are upside down or vise-versa depending which way you first pick up the magazine. “One look, One shot and One place to find all the Jammie G. Hawkins happenings in both Area 1 & 2!” Director, Family and MWR We welcome our newest MWR professionals, the General Manager for Area 1 Bowling, Mr. Ray Rodriguez. He comes to us from Stuttgart, Germany with a lot of experience and enthusiasm! He will be reaching out to all three bowling centers within Area 1 and is available to talk bowling whenever you are! We welcome Ms. Yi, Yu Chong to the Family and MWR Financial Management Branch; don’t say anything to anyone… okay, but, we ‘stole’ her from the USAG Casey Commander, not sure if he knows this… ‘So keep it shush!’ We had the Change of Responsibility for the new USAG Yongsan Command Sergeant Major, CSM Donald R. Robertson, who assumed his responsibilities as of 23 May 2018. We also have the upcoming, USAG Yongsan, Change of Command Ceremony for the new Garrison Commander, where COL J. Scott Peterson will relinquish his responsibilities to COL Monica P. Washington on Friday, 22 June 2018. “WELCOME TO ALL OF YOU!!” As we welcome our newest, we also ‘Bid Adieu” to Gary and Sunny Frankovich. Gary was the Area 1 & 2 PAIO Director and Sunny was the Area 1 Ration Card Control Administrator (I’ll bet you at least met Sunny more than once while assigned here to Area 1). “Farewell to both of you, you will be greatly missed!!” So-long Oxana Balakina – Sports and Fitness Specialist from the Human and Health Performance Center. If you trained/worked out with her and didn’t get into great shape, then you must not be human! We also bid farewell to Col Newton and his family, the USAG Red Cloud Area 1 Commander (as well as its last Commander). We inactivate USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 on 21 June and Col Newton leaves us 22 June. From then on, we will be known as USAG Casey.

ITAEWON SHOPPING This area is located conveniently outside Gate 12 (by the gas station, South Post, Yongsan) and across the street. Itaewon Street is the most exotic place in Seoul to spend a day of shopping, dining, and hanging out. Itaewon holds a long history in its making and is the first place most tourists want to visit in Korea. After the U.S. set up a military base in Korea during the 1970s, many foreigners stationed at the base settled near the Itaewon area, naturally developing the region into a shopping district catering to foreigners. Later, the existence of Itaewon became known worldwide after the widely publicized 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1997, Itaewon was finally designated as an official tourist zone.
