♬~Dashing through the snow, in a one horse open sleigh, over the fields we go, laughing all the way—this is awesome, the holidays are upon us! Winter’s finally arrived and we’re looking forward to our first snowfall to turn Area I into a winter wonderland, now won’t that be something?!? You won’t have to wait too long my friends, with the temperatures continuing to drop, it’s just a matter of time…

Speaking of time, we sure made the best of it last month as we hosted Daniel Dugar and Friends Comedy Show, several BOSS Life Skills Events, collaborated with 2ID SHARP for a 10K Thanksgiving Run and held a soft opening for the new Bama’s BBQ & Grill and Smash Hits Deli at the Warrior Catering and Conference Center, just to name a few. And we’re not done, oh no; not by far, we’re just getting warmed up! Director, Family and MWR

We’re starting December off with a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on DEC 7 (Freeman Hall, CRC) and DEC 8 (Gateway Club, Camp Casey) featuring live entertainment, free pizza, hot beverages, pastries and of course, Santa himself! And back by popular demand (for the 9th straight year), is our Area I Adopt-an-Orphan program providing units and civilian organizations the opportunity to share Christmas cheer with a Korean child. Among this month’s highlights: DEC 3 – Vivaldi Park Ski Trip with Outdoor Recreation DEC 3 – Trick Eye Museum Visit with CRC BOSS DEC 10 – Ski and Snowboarding Trip with Stanley BOSS DEC 17 – Bearstown Ski Trip with Outdoor Recreation DEC 17 – Seoul Cultural Tour with CRC BOSS DEC 31 – Area I Black & White, New Year’s Eve Ball with Casey-Hovey BOSS DEC 31 – 70s Disco and Casino Night with CRC BOSS

A Christmas to Remember Creating Magical Memories with the Children of Noah Rehabilitation Center

Story by: CPL Joshua D. McElroy For U.S. Soldiers in South Korea, the holidays almost always seems to bring a sense of longing for home, especially during a time when most are missing out on dinners and get-togethers with family and friends alike. Now imagine that sense of longing, magnified several times over; happening to someone else on a daily basis, such as a child without a family to call their own? This Christmas Mr. Chong, Sang Sop, Entertainment Specialist, USAG Red Cloud Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation, is hosting the annual Unit Adopt-a-Orphan program, in hopes of enabling Korean children to celebrate the holidays….in much the same way we would like our own children to enjoy Christmas. This season, units are offered the opportunity to host a child from the Noah Rehabilitation Center, anChong, orphanage for Mr. Fred ware & Mr. Sang Sop disabled children in a remote area, north of Dongducheon. The Unit Adopt-an-Orphan program first began in 2007, and since then, Mr. Chong has coordinated this annual event, helping hundreds of unfortunate orphaned children in Korea. This year features the Noah Rehabilitation Center headed by Mr. Kim, Chang Eon, the facility coordinator who oversees living space to include classrooms, medical facilities and a hair salon for 62 orphaned children, ranging from 4 to 18 years of age. The adoption rate for children from this facility is very slim due to the children’s disabilities, but nonetheless, the orphanage staff does it’s very best to rehabilitate the children so that one day, they too can sustain themselves on their own. During my visit to Noah Rehabilitation Center last month, I met a young girl named Choi, Byol. Ms. Choi is 17 years old but has the appearance of a 6 year old due to a rare disease called Gangjeong Syndrome; a disease that causes short bowel and keeps her body from absorbing the right nutrients to grow healthily. Once a month she is administered a shot of hormonal medicine to counter the effects of the disease, and over the span of a year has

14

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

managed to grow 17 cm to 137 cm. The current issue is funding, with injections costing upwards of a thousand dollars each hormone shot relies on donations enabling her to reach the size she is supposed to be. Despite her current condition, it was so touching and inspiring to see Ms. Choi with a positive attitude and a huge smile, from the moment we arrived until the time we left, always excited to have her photo taken. The Unit Adopt-an Orphan program enables Units to provide children with a heartwarming “Christmas to Remember.” On Sunday, December 11, 2016, Mrs. Chong will accompany Unit Soldiers to an orphanage visit for a chance to meet their adopted children. In this way, both Soldiers and children will converse and get to know each other prior to the big day on December 18 when the Unit Soldiers are in turn, given the opportunity to host their children at the Camp Casey, Warrior’s Conference and Catering Center. Prior to the main event, the children will be asked to write down 3 things they would like to receive from Santa this Christmas. This list will be handed over to Units who have the option of selecting one (or all three) gifts their children requested, which in turn would be presented by Santa at the event. On that day, Soldiers and civilian participants will be able to watch and witness the joy on all the faces of the kids as they enjoy a great Christmas meal, live musical and children’s entertainment; and finally when they open their presents! This is a truly touching way to build a lifelong memory for an orphaned child. “Since I started this program, one of the things I have noticed is that after the children have their day of fun, the Units and their Soldiers….they don’t lose touch with them. Once they get to know their adopted children, the units visit the orphanage and continue spending time with them, which is great for the kids, the Soldiers and the facility staff,” added Mr. Chong with a heartfelt smile. If your unit or anyone else you know would like to get involved with the Unit Adopt-a-Orphan program this holiday season, simply call Mr. Chong, Sang Sop at 732-6760 or 010-6301-0052.

The market sells nearly every item under the sun including clothing, food and living essentials and is always bustling day and night. USAG Red Cloud Libraries Outreach Program

Children’s Story Hour with Area I Libraries Article by Steven Toepper & David Hill, Area I Library Managers Photos by CPL Joshua McElroy

Steven Toepper

David Hill

CPL Joshua D. McElroy

After Casey Elementary School closed its doors for the last time in May 2016, one question that came to mind was: ‘where did all the children go?’ Yes, most of the kids have PCS with their parents either to Camp Humphrey’s or off the peninsula, but our community statistics show we still have schoolage children who live with their parents in Area I. Our goal was to find these children and continue providing them the same story-time services that we provide for the USAG Red Cloud and Area I community. One of the first places David ‘Dave’ Hill, Camp Red Cloud Library Manager checked was the International Christian School in Uijeongbu (ICS). Dave met with Ms. Boice, School Principal and learned that many Area I DoD children were attending ICS. Two days later Mr. Hill and I met with Mr. Kilgore the School Director and Ms. Boice to discuss major Area I Library events such as Library Week and the Summer Reading Program. As we shared ideas on how the Library could reach these children and support their education and leisure reading needs, we broached the subject of conducting a story time and other reading related topics to enhance developing better reading habits.

40

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

Libraries

As a result of that meeting, Mr. Hill now visits ICS four times a month for ‘Story Hour’ and conduct a book discussion with children ages 5-8 years old. This initiative is now called the “USAG Red Cloud Library Outreach Program.” The goal of the program is to inform children, families and community that their Area I Library and Family & MWR are still here supporting them; while encouraging Soldiers, DoD civilian and contractor families to get involved by helping children experience and earn a lifelong love for books. On November 9, 2016, Mr. Hill conducted the first (of many more to come) story reading session at ICS Uijeongbu. The first hour was with a group of Kindergarten students followed by another hour with first graders. Mr. Hill read the story “No Jumping on the Bed!” by Tedd Arnold. Dave along with the schools Librarian (Ms. Nona Kilgore), asked questions as the story was read out loud to students. Ms. Kilgore then played a video and song about bears jumping on a bed. The students sang and danced to it—it was a memorable activity that helped emphasize at an early age, that book reading can actually be fun and entertaining! As I write this article, we are in the process of scheduling events, books, dates and times to continue this program. If you would like to be a guest reader, please contact your local USAG Red Cloud Library to arrange for a Story-Hour date and time. The children of Area I are not lost or missing, we’ve found them, all 110 of them----and we’re looking forward to supporting their library needs, and introducing the joy of reading! Mr. Steven Toepper can be reached at 730-3285, or visit your local Area I Library for more information.

TENICA THOMAS

Mrs. Tenica Thomas is no stranger to volunteering for the Red Cross. She has a family history with Red Cross and continues the tradition here in South Korea. Her mother’s devoted volunteerism inspired Mrs. Thomas to become a volunteer herself. Her first experience began as a volunteer for the Red Written by Amanda Johnson Cross in Beyreuth, Germany while her mother volunteered as a paramedic with the Canine Search and Rescue Team. She saw this as a great opportunity to spend time with her mom and their dog, while learning valuable skills and giving back to the community. When Mrs. Thomas relocated to South Korea, she was excited to learn that there was a Red Cross organization in Area I, and promptly began volunteering for the Red Cross team in June of 2016.

to social issues in an entertaining manner such as overseeing BBQ events for Suicide Awareness and Fire Prevention, hosting Zingo games at Casey and Red Cloud bowling centers to promote Disaster Prevention. She also provided much needed support during this year’s Beat the Heat event, providing water to US Army Tankers during their midsummer exercise and also helping the Red Cross office relocate across the Camp Casey post to Building S-802. As a dedicated volunteer, Mrs. Thomas has played a key role in all her volunteer activities. She has done this not only through accomplishing tasks and duties but by providing service with a friendly smile and an open heart, which she believes is the difference between a horrible day and a great week for those she encounters on her volunteer journey. Mrs. Thomas appreciates the dedication of our Soldiers, the peace of mind the military provides, and is willing to do her part to give back and serve the community that she has recently become a part of. Tenica Thomas’ volunteerism and commitment to excellence exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. For this we are grateful, and say Thank You Mrs. Thomas, you are our Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of December 2016!

Mrs. Thomas became a prominent volunteer at Area I Red Cross which came as no surprise since she has provided more than 100 volunteer hours since starting in June. Once a month, Mrs. Thomas could be seen on a regular basis at the Camp Casey TMC providing refreshments for Soldiers, or at the many cookouts hosted by the Red Cross, and at information tables for community awareness events throughout Area I. Mrs. Thomas has been invaluable in helping Red Cross raise awareness
