Feature Article

LIVE IN SEOUL JANUARY 11, 2017

Story & Photos by:

Terrie Elmer

Thanks to Area I Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation; this past week I had the opportunity to go see one of my favorite bands in concert, Metallica, at the Gocheok Dome in Seoul. The opening band was Baby Metal, a Japanese metal band that seemed like a mashup of Metal and K-pop. They were definitely unique. Now this wasn’t the first time I had seen Metallica and the music was as awe inspiring this time as it had been the last. The sounds of the drums and guitars, vibrate through you, making you feel as though you are one with the music. The laser lights pulsing across the air, the smoke billowing from the stage is all so visually stimulating adding to the energy. This was all so very familiar to my last experience. Then there were the differences, subtle things that you don’t think about until you experience something from your culture in a new culture, seen from a different perspective. In the United States, you go to a Metallica

52

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

concert and not only is the music loud, but so are the fans. They are typically dressed much like the band in jeans and black t-shirts. The spectators watching from the floor are active participants, generally starting a mosh pit and being fully physically engaged in the music. That is how it is there and what I expect to see. This is where things differ. I was amazed as I was sitting in the bleachers to see people dressed in suits and ties. Not to say there weren’t any Koreans in t-shirts and jeans, there were, but many were in dress clothes that could have been just as easily worn to church or work in the states. The standing room area on the floor in front of the stage was huge and I expected to see people acting as I stated above, in a mosh pit, somewhat physically threatening, but the norm for metal concerts in the states. Instead, prior to the bands starting, a friend and I were commenting on how many people were sitting cross legged on the ground. We decidedly had come to the conclusion

Feature Article that they would not be like that once the music started, we were wrong. They were more to the outer edges of the standing area though and there were throngs of people standing, moving to the music, but to a lesser degree than what I was used to seeing. You could definitely tell the difference between the Americans who were there and the Koreans, as the Americans were much louder for the most part. Not that either is good or bad, just a marked difference. So, these were my observations, and I am so glad I went and got to experience something familiar to me in a new culture, from a new perspective. I read about the concert in the December edition of “In The Zone” magazine and was so happy I was able to purchase my tickets and transportation through Area I MWR Leisure and Travel. It was well worth the price to have this experience and also to have safe transportation to and from the concert. I really believe that everyone should take the opportunity to get out and explore things while they are stationed abroad. There are so many

amazing things to see and do, even if it is something you would do back at home, you get to see it in a new light. These are wonderful opportunities you are given here, so get out and take advantage of them. Don’t miss out on the next Area I Family & MWR event, check out our website at redcloud.armymwr.com You can also follow Terrie Elmer at her blogsite: www.mogirlabroad.com

THE TAX MAN COMETH: AREA I TAX CENTERS SET TO OPEN JANUARY 30TH

Another year has begun, and with it comes yet another tax season. Area I Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians, and dependents can take comfort in knowing that the Area I Tax Center’s will be offering free tax preparation services. The Tax Centers will be located at Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud (CRC), with mobile tax teams servicing Camp Stanley and the Joint Security Area (JSA). Last year, the Area I Tax Centers saved eligible clients over $200,000 in tax preparation fees. Not only does the Army tax center program save clients hundreds of dollars in preparation fees, but most Soldiers and eligible clients are actually able to obtain tax refunds. In fact, Area I Tax Centers alone were able to recover $1,556,119.00 in refunds. Each tax preparer is trained and certified by the IRS, guaranteeing quality tax preparation that matches or exceeds any commercial tax preparation service.

When can I file my tax returns? Tax returns may be filed as soon as all tax forms are received. This year, active duty Soldiers will receive their W-2s in late January, and the Tax Centers themselves will open on Monday, January 30th.

When will the Area I Tax Centers open? The Camp Casey Tax Center, located on the 2nd Floor of Maude Hall, will open on Monday, January 30th. The CRC Tax Center, located in building S-267 (Housing Office), room 106, will also open on January 30th. Mobile tax teams will be visiting Camp Stanley and the JSA beginning in February.

What hours will the tax centers be open? Both the Camp Casey and CRC Tax Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 0930 to 1700, with the exception of Thursday, when the Tax Centers will open at 1300. The Tax Centers will primarily take clients on an appointment basis, with walk-ins available as time permits. The Camp Casey Tax Center will be open for walk-ins on Thursday afternoon.

Who is eligible for tax preparation services at the Tax Centers? Active duty service members, reservists on active duty for more than 29 days, retirees, DoD civilian employees, and dependents are eligible for tax preparation services. Civilian contractors are not eligible for tax preparation services unless they fall into one of the previous categories.

Will it cost me anything to get my tax returns done at the Area 1 Tax Centers? No, tax preparation services through the Tax Centers are free. Our tax preparers are trained to the highest level by the IRS and are able to complete both federal and state tax returns.

Where can I get further information? For further information, please call the Camp Casey Tax Center at DSN 730-4888.

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

CPT STEPHANIE M. GOGGANS

Captain Stephanie M. Goggans is a volunteer who learned the importance of giving back to the community at a very young age, and it all begun at home; from parents who were public service providers, who taught her and her siblings the importance of helping others. Like most loving parents, the Goggans strived Written by to provide the very best for their children, but it Charles Lyons was also a top priority for them to instill proper values, such as helping others who are in need. It is this very same values that would help shape their children’s character, while sparking an interest in CPT Goggans to become a leader. Her first heartwarming, volunteer experience came when she became a Girl Scout in grade school. This experience instilled a passion for volunteering that grew even more after the scouts and later on as she set her sights into becoming a military officer. She studied hard, took advantage of opportunities available through education, and envisioned extensive possibilities of becoming a military officer as a way to give back; not just to a single community, but to each and every Soldier she has the honor of leading.

and United Services Organization (USO) continuing her march on making a difference. Whether it’s working with United Through Reading Groups, assisting at the Camp Red Cloud Tribe Center or working with the USO to gathering Soldiers to record DVD reading books for their children back home…she’s always at the forefront, donating her time and helping others.

Army Community Service

USAG Red Cloud and Area I

While volunteering at the American Red Cross, she enjoys being the special events volunteer, sharing her creative abilities by making flyers, updating the social media page, and assisting the Station Manager in executing ARC programs within the Area I community. She takes great pride in making sure the military community knows the ARC does a great deal more than just ‘blood and floods.’ She states, “it’s imperative that we get our Soldiers interested about safety, disaster responses, fire prevention, and overall health awareness that benefits the Soldier and the community as a whole.” In a separate interview, CPT Goggans said that Volunteering in an overseas environment, allows her to stay connected with the things she loves back in the states, and that’s giving back to the community! She is a firm believer in “The lesson you learn is not always about you, it’s about the people you serve. And just when I thought I knew what fuels her fire, she added her favorite service related quote by Reverend Dr. MLK Jr: “Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, and a soul generated by love.” CPT Goggans is the epitome of a passionate volunteer who reflects great credit upon herself, the 2nd Infantry Division and the United States Army. Her commitment exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. We applaud you for your dedication to volunteerism and commend you for your community spirit!

Upon entry into college, she continued her volunteerism with various organizations, schools, and churches all the way through graduation. Since her active duty military time started, she volunteers with the Big Brother, Big Sister Program in Cleveland, Ohio and is currently with the American Red Cross (ARC) at Camp Red Cloud, Volunteers of Foreign Wars (VFW)
