SATURDAY, JULY 2 / 6 P.M. CAMP CASEY GOLF COURSE PARKING LOT
A FOND FAREWELL! Area I Team, I asked my MWR team to put right here on the inside cover of IN THE ZONE magazine this column so I can thank you all for your steadfast service over the past two years. This magazine has always been the “go to” guide for all of Area I. It has been – and Is – one of the many tools our leaders use to steer Soldiers to events with positive outcomes. I thank every member of the MWR team— marketing specialists, recreation specialists, waitresses, cooks, supply specialists, financial managers, to name only a few, for making Area I MWR offerings truly Second to None. And to Warriors and all whom we serve across Area I: Thank you. Rare is the occasion that our MWR staff couldn’t meet your needs. I know we didn’t always “get it right,” but I think you would agree with me that we certainly did our best each and every day to serve your needs and help you stay ready and resilient. Thanks also to our families and civilians. As we have steadily reduced family services, you have been most patient and understanding of small friction points and challenges. Thank you for making your voice heard as we get ready to close Casey Elementary/Middle School later this month and our Child and Youth School Services soon after. On behalf of the Area I command team – Command Sgt. Maj. Berry (our garrison CSM), Mr. Steve Ryan (Area I Deputy Garrison Commander), Lt. Col. Gardner (Camp Casey Commander), Command Sgt. Maj. Pedro Guevara (Camp Casey CSM), and Mr. Greg Kirkland (Camp Casey Deputy Garrison Commander) – I applaud you all and I thank you. COL Jack W. Haefner
From your Family and MWR Director

involved, teaching Baby Sitting Courses for the American Red Cross. She would also volunteer, when time allowed it, with other community events and activities. As a Baby Sitting Instructor, Edith’s encouraging attitude brought out the caring and positive nature of her students. Her interaction with both the parents and the teenagers left such a lasting impression that they still remember her and continue to speak well of her at other Installations in Germany and CONUS locations.
Story by Mrs. Gwendolyn McCarthy, ACS Program Manager
The Area I Community Volunteer Spotlight for this month shines on Mrs. Edith Graefe, one of our very own Army Community Service (ACS) Volunteers, here at the USAG Casey location. Edith arrived in Korea and to the Area I community in November 2015. Coming from Fort Carson, Colorado, she inevitably began volunteering with ACS soon after. However, volunteering is not something altogether new to Edith. According to her, volunteering began back in Baumholder, Germany. It was there that she became actively

To date, Edith has accumulated over eighty-(80) volunteer hours, giving her time to support several ACS Programs and participate in community events. This she does on her days off from her salaried job. She is always willing to help no matter how small or large the task! The great thing about Ms. Johannes is her selfless attitude and the desire to help when and wherever she can. When asked why she volunteers, Edith’s response is “Because it is always good to help others.” Pure and simple! We, the staff at Army Community Service thank her for her dedication and commitment to helping others. Mrs. Graefe embodies the spirit of giving back to her community and exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. We too, are grateful, and say thank you, Mrs. Edith Graefe! Congratulations! You are in the Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of June 2016!

Celebrating Korean Food Korean Food Recipe
O-I-SO-BA-GI
오이소박이 Cucumber KImchi
Oisobagi is another type of kimchi that is loved by Koreans, especially during the hot summers. It’s also known as stuffed cucumber kimchi where cucumbers are specially prepared and formed into a pocket then stuffed with vegetables and spicy kimchi paste. It is usually served alongside a meal as a side dish and considered to be very healthy and delicious, supplementing a wellbalanced, low-calorie meal. Keep in mind that kimchi can be made with cabbage, radishes and many other vegetables including cucumber and it always includes red chilies. It is the national dish of Korea, where no meal is served without at least one variation of this spicy, condimentlike salad. If you enjoy the taste of kimchi, you’ll be sure to like oisobagi as well.
Recipe Ingredients • 10-12 cucumbers ( Cucumbers from Korean supermarkets are best but Kirby or pickling cucumbers can be used as substitutes) • ½ cup coarse sea salt • 5 cups water • 1 cup garlic chives • ½ cup green onions • ½ cup gochugaru, red chili pepper flakes • 1 tbsp sugar • 1 tbsp minced garlic • 1 tsp minced ginger
Cooking Directions 1.Thoroughly wash cucumbers and cut them into half widthwise. 2.Take each half then make two slits lengthwise at 90-degree angles to each other, cutting from the raw end almost to the base but not all the way through. 3.Boil water and add salt. Turn off heat and dunk cucumbers for approximately 45 minutes. This will help cucumbers stay crunchy. 4.While cucumbers are being soaked, make stuffing by mixing garlic, ginger, green onion, gochugaru, and sugar in a bowl. Add 3 tbsp of water and mix all ingredients well. 5.Rinse cucumbers with cold water and drain. Wipe and dry cucumbers. 6.Gently place stuffing into each cucumber slits by hand and be careful not to cause complete splits. Evenly distribute stuffing to each cucumber. 7.Refrigerated and store away cucumbers in a tight container for 1-2 days. Serve chilled while cucumbers are still crisp.
