WARRIOR LEADERS

From your Family and MWR Director

“Serving Those Who Serve”

Here we are in November nearing the end of autumn, with trees shedding leaves and folks bundling up in thicker clothing. You might’ve noticed shorter daytimes, much colder nights, when leaving the warmth and comfort of bed gets tougher every morning! Before you know it, winter’s upon us….cool times indeed, and we can’t wait.

Hawkins themed events such as the Area I BOSS 3K Zombie Run, Casey Trunk or Treat, Gateway Halloween Party, Stanley Director, Family and MWR Haunted Tunnel and even a trip to Icheon Rice Cultural Festival. Rest assured, we’re not resting just because the weather’s gotten colder, oh no; FMWR is just getting warmed up! November’s another month, another opportunity to take part in community events & activities beginning with a Daniel Dugar and Friends Show on November 3 at the Gateway Club. Bring your friends and family members along for a night of comedic fun and laughter―just make sure you leave the children home, this is an NC-17 show after all. Order your Holiday Dinner Special “To Go” from Warrior’s Catering for a delicious, roasted Turkey or Ham meal. Party meal problem solved! We’ve got two holiday periods to look forward to in November: Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving

from USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family & MWR Here we are at the start of the Holiday Seasons; beginning with Thanksgiving, leading into Christmas, then finally ending with another New Year in Area I. Many of us are here unaccompanied and without family, so reach out to that one person and invite them to join you in celebrating these beautiful Holiday Seasons, you would be surprised at how much that gesture can make in how they spend the holidays. Holidays can be a sad time of the year for some and for others, the best…so be the one that makes it the “best time” for someone else!! I along with my Family and MWR team members (family), wish to express how thankful we are for your selfless courage, commitment, support and patronage during 2016. We all strive very hard to provide you, our customer, with the very best in programs, services and facilities—and we remain dedicated to providing you the best, as we go into 2017. As I finish my comments, please take time to read our heartfelt Thanksgiving messages from your Area I group of Family and MWR professionals….. Jammie G. Hawkins Director, USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation On behalf of myself, my family and the NAF Support Division “We would like to say Thank You: To our Area I Soldiers for all you do every single day by putting your life on the line for our country and our families. To our Contractors and Civilians for your endless work in providing support to our troops. To our Retirees for your tireless dedication and service to our country. And to our Families for staying strong, steadfast in your support of our heroes as they stand tall when called upon. I, like many of you will be miles away from family and friends, but I am not alone and nor are you, your extended FMWR Family is here for you this holiday season. Cherish what you have, be thankful for the days past, present and those yet to come. I am thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you.” Denise R. von Wiecki Chief, NAF Support Division Directorate of Family & MWR

Happy Holidays Area I and all of the Pacific! May you find Joy this Holiday Season wherever you or your friends may be in the peninsula, as you explore and enjoy Korea. I hope that you’ll find time to experience a local meal, find a new place to hang out with your friends, or simply volunteer and share that Joy with others! Reach out to a friend or battle buddy this Thanksgiving, and always remember; you’re never alone, you now are and always will be a part of the Area I Family. Constance V. Roderick General Manager, Camp Casey Lodge Area I Lodging Thanksgiving is traditionally the time of year when families come together and reflect on their blessings, and gratitude for what they have. This year, my wife Terrie and I will be focused on the Soldiers, families and civilian employees who serve in what we have come to know as Warrior Country, and the blessings we have received because of the sacrifice you all make to ensure our safety, our freedom and our way of life. May God keep you safe and we wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. Michael D. Elmer Director, Recreation Branch and Community Activities Directorate of Family & MWR I would like to say Thank You, to all our military Soldiers, men or women, and other members of the military in Area I. Although I might not be in your shoes, there is never a day that goes by that I don’t think about your sacrifice, in leaving families and friends and traveling thousands of miles to heed our country’s call. I wish you all, joy, peace and happiness; and that our almighty God may protect and watch over you, each and every day

Alice Y. Park Chief, Financial Management Branch, NAF Support Division Directorate of Family & MWR On behalf of Area I Sports, Fitness and Aquatics, I would like to wish our service members a Happy Thanksgiving. Although you may be far from home, please look to your left and right and remember that you have an extended family of fellow Soldiers, civilian friends and other military members in this community. My team and I are thankful for your sacrifice and dedication, and wish you all the best of luck during your time in South Korea. Oh, and remember; after you indulge yourself on Turkey Day, we invite you to come see us at any of our Area I Fitness Centers----we’ll help you burn those excess calories in no time! Happy Thanksgiving! Larry O. Butler, Director, Area I Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Directorate of Family & MWR The Holidays is about family and friends, but it can also be a time to ponder lessons learned, a time to share happiness, a chance to look back and remember great memories and good people who’ve come across our lives. I’m thankful for our service members, retirees, US and KN civilians for what they do each day to improve the lives of others and helping our community grow. Whether it’s a cheerful greeting, a sincere smile, a simple gesture of support, to acts of kindness that go above and beyond what’s expected—Thank You, for helping make Area I a much better place to live and work in. Happy Thanksgiving. Marenzo Domingo Manager, Marketing & Advertising Branch Directorate of Family & MWR

The Holidays are a time for family and friends. Although you’re likely far away from family back home, please think of us Area I FMWR and your Base Libraries as your extended family while deployed here in the Land of the Morning Calm. Korea is an exciting duty station with interesting places to visit, a friendly people, and amazing things to learn about their culture. My staff and I are very proud of your sacrifice, we hope that you’ll enjoy this duty station and that we can help ease somehow your separation from loved ones back home. You are an amazing group of Soldiers, we’re grateful for each and every one of you. Happy Thanksgiving. Steven F. Toepper Manager, Area I Libraries Directorate of Family & MWR I offer a simple Thanksgiving message, wishing you and your loved ones a terrific time of fellowship, a time to reflect upon life’s blessings, and for you and yours to thoroughly enjoy this special day in the company of friends and family. Thank you for all you do, may many more blessings come your way this day, and every day of your life. Happy Thanksgiving to All of You. Elmon C. SEOUL NAMSAN TOWER & ITAEWON SHOPPING TOUR Saturday, November 12

Tour

Signup Deadline: November 10 (minimum of 20 required) Transportation & Admission: $35

NAMSAN TOWER - Seoul Tower opened to the public on October 15, 1980 and has since become a major tourist attraction. The 236.7 meter tower sits atop Namsan Mountain, offering a panoramic and enchanting view of Seoul and the surrounding areas. Thirty years and countless visitors later, the structure was renamed ‘N Seoul Tower.’ The letter ‘N’ stands for the tower’s ‘new’ look, which resulted from a 15 billion won remodeling project in December 2005. With a new lighting system and changes to the tower’s overall color scheme, event coordinators can now customize the tower for special occasions and seasonal events. Visitors are encouraged to try N Grill, a Western-style, revolving restaurant atop Seoul Tower and the Sky Restroom, an artfully decorated space; both offering breathtaking views of the cityscape. [N Seoul Tower] Lobby: Entrance to observatory, information desk, N Gift, N Sweet Bar, cafe, nursing room, N Photo Plaza 1F - The Best Burger in Seoul, N Terrace, N Gift, ticket booth, Food O’clock Plaza 2F - The Place Dining (Italian restaurant), roof terrace Tower 1F - Hancook (Korean Restaurant) Tower 2F - The Wishing Pond, Sky Restroom, cafe, cosmetic shop Tower 3F - Observatory, The BA:NG (Gift shop), Weenybeeny, N Photo Tower 5F - N Grill (French restaurant)

ITAEWON SHOPPING -This area is located conveniently outside Gate 12 of Yongsan Garrison, just across the street. Itaewon Street is the most exotic place in Seoul to spend a day of shopping, dining, clubbing and just plain hanging out with friends. This area holds a long history as one of the most popular places for tourists to visit upon arriving in Korea. After the U.S. set up a military base in Korea during the 1970s, many foreigners stationed at the base settled near the Itaewon area, naturally developing the region into a shopping district catering to foreigners. Itaewon became known worldwide after the widely publicized 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1997, Itaewon was finally designated as an official tourist zone. Please bring Korean WON for Souvenir and lunch or Snacks. Departure Times: Hovey CAC: 8 a.m. Casey CAC: 8:20 a.m. CRC CAC: 9:10 a.m. Stanley CAC: 9:40 a.m. Return at site: 3:30 p.m.

TOP 10 Winter Activities & Festivals Winter Activities & Festivals

Don’t Spend Winter in Hibernation, Get Out and Do Something!

1. Go Snow Swimming Alright, it’s winter and what better way to enjoy it than to see large fluffy clumps of snow everywhere! You’ll definitely have to take a trip away from the city though, to Gangwondo Province where snowfall is a lot more frequent. At times the snow is deep enough that you can actually jump and ‘swim’ on it. For those of you who’ve never seen snow before, this is one sweet winter treat!

2. Pedal Away at a Rail Bike Ride Winter environment + rail bike = chilly, exhilarating, awesome winter fun! For those of you who love outdoor activity and nature, perhaps a rail bike ride in Gangchon through a serene winter landscape is what you’ll need. Pedal down the rail track while enjoying winter scenes around you―oh, and don’t forget to dress warm or you’ll most certainly freeze before the last stop.

3. Experience a Light Festival There’s always something romantic and magical about lanterns at night. Keep an eye out for the Seoul Lantern Festival which is set to begin the 2nd week of November, featuring of course….lanterns! And floats, and a mini-parade of lights, and closing festivities in Seoul. You get the picture. And speaking of which, make sure you charge up those cameras, you’ll be snapping away all night.

4. Bring Out Your Inner Child – Go Snow Sledding! Sledding brings back childhood memories―for those of you living in states where it actually snows! But for those who’ve never seen snow, what better way to enjoy it than to go sledding downhill in Seoul Land. That’s right, Korea’s first theme park boasts a fantastic illumination show at night and a sledding hill to make your winter experience even more memorable.

5. Go Strawberry Picking It’s that time of year to enjoy strawberry picking in Korea. Take your family and friends with you for an excursion to a strawberry farm in Gapyeong, approximately 90 minutes from Seoul. You keep what you’ve picked, and we’re sure you’ll pick enough to last you a couple days’ worth of strawberry food recipes. You’ll probably be within a couple minutes of Nami Island, so take time to enjoy the redwood-lined paths and other natural winter landscapes.

Winter Activities & Festivals

in South Korea 6. Visit the 2018 Winter Olympics Venue Did you know that Korea is hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. OK, now that you know, grab your gear and head out to where international athletes will compete in 2018. Experience cross-country skiing if not at Pyeongyang, perhaps at Bearstown Ski Resort or Vivaldi Park Ski Resort (and many others) offering a range of slopes for all types of skiers and snowboarders, from beginner to experienced levels.

7. Sunrise Festival at Winter Sea Take your partners to a romantic winter getaway in Jeongdongjin in Gangwon-do, one of the top tourist destinations in Korea featuring scenic pine trees, a tranquil coast, a picturesque blue winter sea, and rustic railway rides. This is the spot where couples and others gather to watch the earliest sunrises in Korea…what better place to see the very first sunrise of 2017?

8. Ice Fishing Festival Ever tried catching fish with your bare hands? Then give it a try at the 2016 Hwachoen Sancheoneo Ice Festival, considered one of the 7 Winter Wonders of the World by CNN. Enjoy ice-fishing, ice sleigh rides, bobsled, festival food and much more. The area is one of the first places in Korea to freeze so you’ll likely see lots of snow and other winter activities.

9. Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival It’s been said by our Korean brethren that if you’re only going to experience one winter festival this season, this is DEFINITELY the one to plan for. This area is famous for heavy snowfall, and visitors can expect a number of winter activities to include ice sculptures, winter-themed artwork, sledding, a dog sled ride, and more than enough snow to make a snowman or two.

10. Gorge on Korean Winter Food Korea is known for frigid winter months and the country has developed its own traditional winter foods designed to keep the body warm and comfortable! Try out the following: Tteok-Mandu Guk, Tteobokki, Sundubu Jjigae, Hotteok, Bungeoppang, and Bungeo-ppang. Huh, what are these? This is the part where you’ll have to find a Korean friend to help you experience these foods―it’s fun finding out!

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

SPC NICOLAS MIHOJEVICH

Written by Amanda Johnson

SPC Nicolas Mihojevich Is our spotlight volunteer for the month of November! For many Americans, November is associated with giving thanks and we would like to thank SPC Mihojevich for his volunteer service as well as his service to our country. SPC Mihojevich has been volunteering his entire Army career. This month will also mark Mihojevich’s one year in South Korea.

SPC Mihojevich’s Army and volunteer career started at Fort Benning, Georgia. There, he was a general volunteer with 3-11 Infantry and the Soldier and family Assistance Center (SFAC). He later volunteered at two of the elementary schools on the installation as a crossing guard and math tutor. In the local community of Fort Benning, SPC Mihojevich volunteered with the Chattahoochee Veteran’s Society in the Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day flag ceremonies. When he PCS’d to Fort Sill, SPC Mihojevich continued to volunteer. At Fort Sill, SPC Mihojevich volunteered for installation clean-ups and on the weekends, offered his time at the Air Defense Artillery Museum in the Learning Center. On the more creative and fun side of volunteering, SPC Mihojevich was in charge of the 2015 Haunted house for B/2-6 ADA Battery.

astonishing 1000 hours at the USO alone. You can spot SPC Mihojevich at the front desk of the USO on most days but he also puts his Master’s Degree in Applied Mathematics to use by tutoring fellow Soldiers. He offers tutoring, anytime he is volunteering at the USO, in mathematic related fields to those needing assistance with classes they are taking, studying for aptitude tests and wishing to improve their GT scores. Through the USO, SPC Mihojevich also volunteers teaching English to Koreans in Dongducheon and assists in special events. He had a major role as part of the event crew in both the Warrior Rush on Camp Casey and the Friendship Festival in the Ville. The answer to why SPC Mihojevich volunteers is very simple; he likes helping others. He is thankful for the many opportunities the Army provides for Soldiers to volunteer, which he has done at every installation to which he was assigned. In volunteering at the USO, SPC Mihojevich is giving back to a place that assisted him when he arrived here. The USO provides a comfortable environment, snacks, entertainment, local community information, a safe place to hang out, internet and printer capabilities and most of all a friendly smile for those who find themselves feeling bewildered in a foreign environment. SPC Mihojevich is glad to be a part of this environment and organization and to pay forward the kindness he received to other Soldiers stationed in Area I. SPC Mihojevich encourages others to take advantage of the many volunteer opportunities to discover how satisfying it can be to give back to the community.

Here in Area I, and more specifically at Camp Casey, SPC Mihojevich has made his volunteer mark at the Camp Casey USO. In 2016, SPC Mihojevich has racked up an
