www.degradationmovement.org The Shell Mycelium partecipates as a Collateral event at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2016. The Shell Pavilion is a pavilion made of spores and the wooden structure forms the growing ground. The mycelium eats it, merges with it, transforms it and grows through it. This pavilion will be a building, which, after it is born, will grows along with its visitors, and dies, once its purpose is fulfilled. The only remains left behind are the experiences felt under it.

MYCELIUM Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. The mass of hyphae is sometimes called shiro. Fungal colonies composed of mycelium are found in and on soil and many other substrates.

The deisgn consist in the reinterpretation of traditional lebanes houses: Pointed arches are Islamic inspiration and were used often in many Islamic dynasties and its used in the house as an empathizing element that is shown from the main access and on the pool side facade Arabic patterns are a huge collection of patterns that varriate within the location of the aritifact . This pattern is taken from Byblos , one of the oldest cities on the shores of the midditerranian sea of lebanon The pitched roof is a restriction in the neighborhood and is an inspiration from the typical leba- nese house , that is characterized by the red colored pitch roof protecting the ceiling and giving an aestetical touch from above The water element is an important figure in the medditerranian culture . Not only because it refers to the sea , but also because water was found next to many houses in the arab world to colden the hot breeze, so for that it was added in the villa The stone should be used on most of the parts of the Villa . For this , being a restiction and a must it is introduced. Moreover , the use of the beije stone was to create a harmony woth the brown color of the grid and pattern and the white color of the paint

Facade design Beirut - Lebanon 2015 in construction Dr. R. Kanj Giombattista Areddia Mohamad Yassin Facade design CGI production Construction drawings

In the prosperous and competitive Beirut real estate market the aim of the project is to design an attractive facade in order to speed the appartaments sell up of the building already in progress. The target is to avoid the appearance of the traditional residential building in Beirut, for that reason the only key elements that allow these reinterpretation are the bowindows and the flower garden terraces. The final design creates a dynamic facade playing with these elements through the use of two different finishings in order to break the monotony of the floors repetition.

The facade design is developed as a building makeup . To avoid the typical look of the residential building existing in that area a weaved grid create a dynamic facade that can easy became a reference point for the area. The use of colored glasses in the grid helps to give a different appearance during the day and at the same time create different expiriences of the same building.

Final Thesis - “Breathing Panel” RSIII : Digital Matter & Itelligent Costruction Master in Advanced Architecture @ Iaac [Institute of advanced architecture of catalonia]

Category: Location: Year: Team:

Education Barcelona 2013/2014 Apostolos Marios Mouzakopoulos,

Dimitrios Aidonis, Giombattista Areddia Automated ventilation systems are usually complex building features. Moving elements require motors that add cost, weight and energy consumption to the construction, while they are often significant in size, reducing the structure’s visual delicacy. Smart materials are here to change this paradigm and open the path towards a new architecture. The breathing panel is a low cost, lightweight, durable and efficient modular ventilation panel. It uses a shape memory alloy wire to create an opening equal to 35% of the panel’s total area. Our research gave us the oportunity to experiment using a responsive material. By studying its behavior as well as its advantages and limitations we drew conclusion on how it could be used in architecture. After a thorough multi-directional experimentation phase, we focused on an application that is of essential architectural meaning. The use of muscle wire as an actuator of an opening-closing ventilation panel mechanism demonstrated the capacity of “smart materials” to serve as real-scale building elements. A system like that has a series of advantages: First, it consists of modular lightweight components. There are no motors or mechanis-ms involved, which means that the structure is significantly lighter and visually delicate. The actuating mechanism itself is more reliable than a conventional equivalent. Muscle wire does not rely on mechanical or electical parts. I relies on its own chemical composition. It is autonomous and can be actuated practically infinite times. Maintenance cost is therefor minimal. The overall construction cost is also low. Less weight and absence of sophisticated mechanisms means easy, low cost construction and assembly.

VISUALIZATION WORK

COMPETITION: [RIO DE JANEIRO] Symbolic World Cup Structure team: Giombattista Areddia, Federico Ciavarella role: concept, 3d modelling, drawing, post production, presentation

The Brazilian society represents one of the best model that embodies the World Cup spirit’s. It is a society where the racial and cultural mixture is its union secret’s. The Brazilian diversity as a world heritage. This spirit is expressed by the project trough a dissonant shapes clash that becames an encounter with the results of their union. The squared pavillions face with the curved one, all together enveloped in a path. The project concept and sustainability is mainly reached by the use of bamboo structures. The pavillion wants to promote the bamboo use, to show its architectural and structural properties. Bamboo is a natural, renewable, low cost (extensively diffused in the country), a valid and economic alternative for social housing emergencies.

COMPETITION:

UNDER THE CARPET [CASABLANCA] Sustainable Market Square team: Giombattista Areddia, Rodolfo Parolin, Sebastian Alvarado role: concept, 3d modelling

CONCEPT “Under the Carpet” is a garden that brings surrealism to the discussion of today’s garden. It represents the gesture of trimming the garden´s soil and pulling it up the see “what’s going on under”. It’s a metaphor for today´s holistic garden, based on the understanding of nature itself, more than just (re)shaping it. This garden reflects on the complexity and importance of one of the major components of the Earth's ecosystem: SOIL. A curved structural grid serves to hold pots with different plants including colorful flowers, eatable, fruit and aromatic plants. The bottom of the pots form a mycelium surface that provides eatable mushrooms. The pots are interconnected with an electronic interactive system: when a plant is touched the ones that interact with it will glow and light up so the visitors experience the hidden relations within plants. There are removable pots that the visitors take home to continue the experience. “Under the Carpet” brings together biology, technology, and the information society, creating a range of sensory, emotional and intellectual experiences through an unusual physical setting that invites exchange and reflection.

SOIL

STRUCTURE Earth soil is the habitat for the organisms that recycle the nutrients, being the largest superficial carbon reservoir. It filters and purifies the water, provides nutrients for plants, and the food we need. It´s the surface where live occurs. The more complex a soil is, the more biomass and diversity it will sustain.
