Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: ‘‘‘‘‘ Selected to win the race.

‘‘••• Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

‘‘‘‘• Good chance of being placed. ‘‘‘•• By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

‘•••• Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

RACE SUMMARY

Richard Hannon’s SYMPHONY PERFECT will probably need to improve again on her Chepstow second a week ago, but that’s entirely possible, and she gets the nod. The market is likely to tell a story though, as her main rival could well turn out to be a newcomer from the same stable, Mount Rainier, a #160,000 close relation to smart winner at uo to 7f. SARAH’S VERSE is unbeaten in 3 at this track, her last couple of victories most convincing, so she’s fancied to defend that record despite a poor run at Salisbury a fortnight ago. Recent Brighton scorer Batchelor Boy is an obvious danger, while Temple Bruer will benefit from a return to a quicker surface, so he can’t be ruled out. 1-2-3: 1.SARAH’S VERSE 2.BATCHELOR BOY (IRE) 3.TEMPLE BRUER KEY colours

A case can be made for most of these but the most persuasive one is for TROPICAL CYCLONE who starts life in handicaps on an attractive mark and is fancied to open her account. Hashtagmetoo didn’t enÌoy the rub of the green when fiåh at Wolverhampton so is feared most, especially if blinkers eke out some improvement, while the returning Quemonda can have a say too.
