Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

We have kicked the season off in fantastic style and have already welcomed a tremendous number of spectators through the gates so far this season, and we are looking forward to what the rest of the season brings. We have had some incredibly competitive racing during the start of our season and I would like to thank all Owners & Trainers for choosing to run their horses with ourselves to date and the very best of luck to all runners this afternoon.
As you will see in the racecard, we have 8 exciting races occurring this afternoon. 7 of our races are very kindly sponsored by Betting.Bet, with one race being sponsored by Paradiso Blinds, and I would like to personally thank both of these sponsors for their support of our raceday today.
We were recently very sad to hear the news of the untimely passing of professional jockey, Stefano Cherchi. Stefano tragically passed away earlier this month at the age of 23, following a fall whilst race riding in Australia and today’s meeting coincides with Stefano’s Remembrance Mass in Newmarket
We would like to invite everyone present at the Racecourse today to join us in a moment’s silence in Stefano’s memory, which will take place around the parade ring before the first race. Before Stefano rode in Australia, he was successful in the UK, riding 11 times here at Bath and everyone connected with the racecourse would like to offer their sincerest condolences to Stefano’s friends, family and colleagues.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our raceday employees who have worked tirelessly during the start of this season. I would like to thank them for their continued commitment and dedication. We always receive outstanding feedback about the excellent service they provide on all of our fixtures throughout the season, so I would like to express my gratitude for all of their hard work.
We hope you have a wonderful evening with us, and we hope to welcome you back soon to another 2024 fixture.
Wishing you a very enjoyable day from all at Bath Racecourse.
Simon Tonge Executive Director

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing
surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.bath-racecourse.co.uk.

A competitive handicap. SQUEEZEBOX had a good first campaign with Mick Appleby last season and appeals as one who can go on again in 2024 so he gets the nod but there are plenty of possible dangers, headed by Militry Decoration, Sailing On and last year’s C&D scorer On The Right Track.

The hat-trick beckons for CIARA PEARL, who is yet to finish outside the first two places and can defy a small rise in the weights for her Kempton victory earlier this month. Tortured Soul has been a real success story for his yard over the winter and he’s put forward as the main danger back on turf, with previous C&D winner Carp Kid not out of things, either.

Lakota Brave has a similar profile to the selection being a progressive handicap debutant, so rates the main threat ahead of the hat-trick seeking Moonspirit.
