Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

We are delighted towelcomeyou to ourMJ Church Racedayon Friday24th May2024.
We are delighted to welcome you to our MJ Church Raceday on Friday 24th May 2024. We are set for a wonderful day of racing; with all our races being proudly sponsored by MJ Church and their supporters. I would like to take this opportunity to thank MJ Church for their continued sponsorship here at Bath, and wish them all an enjoyable day.
We have had a very exciting and competitive start to the season and have seen an incredible standard of racing. I would like to congratulate the connections of Adaay In Devon and Andromedas Kingdom both of which have already won twice so far this season. Hopefully we will welcome these course specialists back to Bath soon to see if they can improve on their impressive records. I would also like to especially thank all of the Owners and Trainers that have chosen to enter their horses here at Bath so far this season – your support is greatly appreciated and we are wishing you the best of luck for both today and future fixtures.
We were also very happy to see Haatem come 3rd in the 2000 Guineas recently at Newmarket The Richard Hannon trained colt won here last May before going on to win the Group 2 Vintage Stakes last summer and the Group 3 Craven Stakes this year. It is always fantastic to see Bath winners go on to land big prizes and I would like to congratulate all the team at Richard Hannon’s yard for their recent success.
Looking ahead, we have a fantastic set of upcoming fixtures to look forward to. Friday 7th June sees ourselves host our 90’s Racenight with music from Re-Take That before we see the ever popular Ladies Day return on Saturday 15th June. This year we are proud to welcome Marvin Humes to play after racing on what promises to be the biggest party Bath will see this year! Tickets and the last few hospitality places are still available so head to the website to get your tickets or visit the customer service point if you wanted to book today.
Wishing you all an enjoyable day from everyone at Bath Racecourse, and we hope to welcome you back soon to another 2024 fixture.

We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.bath-racecourse.co.uk.

In November 2022 we collected a statue of Red Rum from Aintree Racecourse which was originally unveiled in 1987. The statue was in a poor state and we were tasked with transporting it to Talos Art Foundry in Hampshire, where their skilled team undertook a delicate restoration on this bronze of the infamous three times Grand National winner. There’s a short video on YouTube showing this fascinating process, just search for ‘Aintree Racecourse Red Rum Refurbishment’. In March 2023 we made the return journey to Aintree to take Red Rum home, just in time for the Grand National.

WEIGHTWATCHER: JADE COUNTRY won off a handicap mark of 71, his rating is now down 11lb to 60. LONGEST TRAVELLER: LUNARIO trained by A Haynes, Newmarket, 155 miles.
EYE OF THE WATER was disappointing at Chepstow 10 days ago but his record at Bath is an excellent one so, returned to this venue, he makes as much appeal as any of these. Lunario arrives at the top of his game so he has to go on the shortlist, while the quirky Racing Demon is dangerous if he’s in the same mood as last time.

RACE SUMMARY
Competitive event for the grade with some interesting young horses looking to improve Despite a delayed start to her career, Hattie Sparks looked one to note on debut and with her jockey keeping the ride, could go close.ThoughAloof’s wins were over shorter, her sire was a Group 1PAwinner at this trip and further, and having dropped to her last winning mark, should be competitive here. However, with theJames Owen team still in red hot form under all codes,VICTORIAmakes most appeal. She shaped well on return on ground that was too heavy and with the hood left off here, looks the type to progress up the handicap.
