Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.

HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

On behalf of the team at Bath Racecourse we would like to extend a very warm welcome to you this evening on our Cider Racenight!

We are set for a fantastic evening of both music and racing, with a number of exciting flat races taking place tonight, in addition to an outstanding performance from The Wurzels after racing. We are being joined by a number of local cider producers including Thatchers and Lilley’s Cider, I would like to thank them for their support of the evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome this evening’s sponsors – Andersons Waste Management, Big Stage Hire, the GB Tap Dance Team, Weatherbys and the family of Ann Lewitt. I would like to thank each of our sponsors for their generosity and wish them all an enjoyable evening with ourselves.

We have a very exciting set of competitive races tonight for you to enjoy. I would like to thank the Owners, Trainers & Jockeys who are with ourselves tonight for joining us and would like to wish them all the very best of luck with their endeavours this evening. The avid racing fans amongst you will have seen some recent victories of Bath specialists. Blue Hero won for the 8th time here, equalling Chucklestone’s record of most career victories at Bath (1990-1996) and Symbol of Hope won for the 7th time with ourselves, joining horses such as Cauda Equia and Hard to Figure on 7 wins in the all time leader boards. It will be interesting to see if either can go on to hold the record outright in time.

But the excitement doesn’t stop at the finish line tonight! After tonight’s racing, get ready to tap your feet and let loose, for the renowned musical talents of The Wurzels who will be taking to the stage on the Final Furlong Lawn. Renowned for their infectious folk-infused tunes and authentic West Country spirit, The Wurzels will have you dancing and singing along to their hits, making this night an unparalleled blend of equestrian excellence and musical merriment.

We are well over half of the way through our season and following tonight only have 7 racedays remaining of our 2024 season. We really hope to welcome you back between now and the end of the season to see out this season in style. Highlights remaining include our Country & Western Racenight on Saturday 14th September where we will have a Taylor Swift tribute after racing and our Armed Forces Day where we will have a display from the Red Devils along with a host of military themed entertainment. Both of these days still have hospitality options available which can be booked online or by calling the office on 01225 424609.

We hope you have an enjoyable evening here with us, making the most of the racing, music, food and drink on offer. I would again like to wish the best of luck to all trainers, jockeys and owners with their runners tonight who I am sure will be getting a big cheer when they cross the finish line.

Best of luck and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing

surface. On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.bath-racecourse.co.uk.

The Ann Lewitt Where It All Began Handicap Stakes

Bath Racecourse is where it all began for Ann.

Growing up in Weston Super-Mare she was known to have the odd unauthorised day off school to go to the races at Bath.

Having moved away, through marriage some forty years ago she has always wanted to go back and this big birthday has finally given her the opportunity to come home to her favourite racecourse.

Seeing the Wurzels is a huge bonus. Her dream as a girl was to one day own her own horse and now she not only has 4 at home, she also has a few legs in racehorse syndicates that she would never have dreamed of being possible.

Pictured here with her favourite, Aramis Grey.

The Weatherbys Stallion Book Handicap at Bath this evening, with acompetitivefieldofeightsettogo topostintheClass6contest.

Course winner Secret Handsheikh is likely to be popular on the back of his latest wide-margin success at Brighton over this trip. John Gallagher’s six-year-old took advantage of a career-low mark anditwashardnottobeimpressed by the performance, making all in dominant fashion en route to a facile eight-and-a-half length victory. Although it remains to be seen if he can back that up raised 10lbs, he did win off this same mark lastSeptember.

Course winner Secret Handsheikh is likely to be popular on the back of his latest wide-margin success at Brighton

Grace Harris’ Sisters In The Sky has raced exclusively over course and distance here at Bath on his last three starts, winning the first of those and following up with third and second place finishes the last twice. The five-year-old was slowly away last time and was made to work hard to hang onto the back of thefield, howeverhecaughttheeye

withhisfinishingeffortashestayed on strongly widest of all to take second late on. The Showcasing gelding will have to break better here but is a big player from an unchangedmark.

SecondCollectionhasbeenbehind Sisters In The Sky the last twice but is a two-time course winner, whilst Adrian Wintle’s Vaunted made a winning debut at Bath back in 2021 but couldn’t justify favouritism over courseanddistancelasttime. Some Nightmare is winless in almost two years but is surely starting to become well-handicapped from a sliding mark, now 16lbs below that last winning mark and in the places herewhenlastseen.

The lightly raced five-year-old You Are Everything has yet to shed her maiden tag in nine starts and may just need the run on her belated seasonal reappearance. Jack Channon’s four-year-old Betweenthesticks was rated as high as 81 as a two-year-old on the back of three victories but has beaten just one horse home in his last three starts and must bounce back in a first-time tongue strap. Thismydream drops back in class for Michael Attwater following a respectable third at Newmarket last time, but it is worth noting that he has yet to score on the turf in 19attempts.
