OFFICIAL RACEDAY PROGRAMME & FORM GUIDE £3
AFTERNOON RACING MON 6 SEPTEMBER
SADLY, SOME NON-RUNNERS BUT STILL A GREAT DAY Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton, where I am delighted to sponsor for the 25th year. The pandemic prevented the sequence from being maintained in 2020 but I’m sure we shall soon make up for lost time. You will see the Ian Carnaby Handicap at 2pm is not a selling race this year. That’s a pity because I love those old characters but the BHA switched the cards for August 23 and today. ‘My’ seller a couple of weeks ago was won by Jack Ryan, a horse not a chap, and I’d have tipped him to you (yes I would, honestly) because his trainer John Ryan had also entered him for a non-seller at Yarmouth the following day with 7lb claimer Tia Nicholls booked. Therefore he must have thought Jack would pick up a 5lb penalty for winning here, which he did, all out, by a neck under Darragh Keenan. Easy game, racing. (Or so I thought fifty years ago.) The Winning Post Suite will be full of committed supporters and, I dare say, a few reprobates. A good word, reprobate, like ‘rascal’. It’s a funny thing because if you say ‘You rascal, you!’ these days it’s a sign of affection, possibly even admiration. But if you called someone a rascal in the 19th or early 20th century, there was every chance you’d be appearing before m’ learned friends. As for rapscallion, well, don’t go there. I’m very sad to have lost a couple of regulars. Stewart Parker, whose dry sense of humour and long-suffering attachment marked him out as a true Fulham supporter, has gone. So has my great friend Pat McElroy, an Arsenal devotee whose mild teasing of his Tottenham counterparts stopped well short of a yellow card. Both fell to cancer, as did DS John Stratford, who arrested the Sex Pistols during his Flying Squad days. In semi-retirement he became a respected ring inspector around the southern tracks, including Brighton. I doubt that he could ever have been an ‘under cover’ man; he looked more like a retired copper than anyone you’ve ever seen. This is an extra-special day for me because my elder daughter Catherine is over from Canada and will be presenting the prizes. Obviously it would help if we could find the winner. When I looked at the entries on Friday Jack Ryan was in there but I suppose our starting point would be Mostallim or Rhyme Scheme, especially if Michael Appleby secures the services of William Buick. Then again, it’s hard to resist a horse with a name like Don’t Jump George, because we all know how George feels after a hard day. He was down to be ridden by Rob Hornby, who can’t go wrong at the moment and won the big race at Goodwood the other day on Lavender’s Blue. Now, if you know the lyrics to the nursery rhyme Lavender’s Blue you’re at least as old as I am but please don’t jump. Brighton really is a bit special so just relax and enjoy yourselves. And most importantly of all, please stay fit and well.
Ian Carnaby
