Star Ratings Explained

Br

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

RACE SUMMARY

Despite still looking a work-in-progress, HAVANA HEAT displayed much more than previously on back of being gelded/switched to handicaps when just touched off at Lingfield 8 days ago. He can come out on top with the likelihood of more to come operating from such a low base. Zous Baby and Wedgewood may well emerge as the chief dangers.

WEATHERBYS GLOBAL STALLIONS APP MAIDEN STAKES

The 5f Weatherbys Global Stallions App Maiden Stakes has attracted a select field of five runners, including three newcomers, which makes up for an extremely intriguing affair

Mashadi brings the highest level of form in the book amongst the pair who have a run under their belt, stringing together a trio of runner-up finishes. His sire, Blue Point, has enjoyed an excellent start to his stallion career, with seven individual winners to 33 runners. Richard Hannon’s runner has been narrowly defeated by some potentially smart rivals, so sets the standard here in a bid to get his well-deserved first victory.

Mammy is the other with a previous run, with Michael Bell’s filly beating just one other home at Newmarket on debut last month. That was a hot maiden to start in though, with the winner likely heading to Royal Ascot and the third a subsequent winner. Although plenty of speed in her pedigree, her dam was a 7f winner and a half-sister to this year’s Nell Gwyn winner Mammas Girl so she may appreciate a step up in trip later in the season.

Owen Burrows is in red-hot form at present and his Budding Poet make his debut here. Saffie Osborne takes the ride aboard this son of Coventry Stakes winner Calyx¸ who has already produced three impressive debut winners from his first crop this season. The dam was a winner over 1m2f and 1m3f, unable to win as a juvenile, so the dam-side doesn’t scream early speed.

Richard Hannons’s Commander Crouch is also out of a 1m2f winning mare of Sir Michael Stoute’s, named Seven Magicians. She is a half-sister to Listed winner Ocean Silk, who finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks, so is another who may appreciate further as her career progresses. The dam of Commander Crouch has produced five winners though, all successful as juveniles, including California Disegno who finished second in the Listed Winkfield Stakes as a two-year-old.

Princess Chizara is by the Group-winning sprinter Cotai Glory and out of a Sir Prancelot mare who won over 5f on her third career start. Conrad Allen’s filly is bred for sprinting, and will likely relish the quick ground based on here pedigree
