It is policy at this racecourse for screens to be erected when a horse requires veterinary treatment on the track. This is to offer some privacy and calm for both horse and vet and does not automatically imply that a fatality has occurred

Star Ratings Explained
Br
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

The fact LOOBY went off at only 7/2 for a Newmarket maiden on her second start and was pitched into a useful conditions race at Glorious Goodwood last time suggests she’s thought capable of better off an opening rating in the low-60s and she’s taken to strike under Saffie Osborne. Horse Whisperer is an obvious danger on the back of last month’s C&D win, while Tropical Air hails from a leading yard and could improve now handicapping

FIVE AND NINE, THE BRIGHTON LINE
Good afternoon and welcome to Brighton
I am delighted to sponsor the Ian Carnaby Handicap for the 27th year, though sadly we must accept the fact that selling races are gradually being phased out so I am now responsible for a modest, non-selling Class 6 handicap.
Heaven only knows what old Les Hall and Richmond Sturdy would have said but Bill Wightman rarely bothered with sellers and the same was true of Herbert Blagrave Bill dropped the disappointing Brookway to a seller at Doncaster many years ago and lost him at the auction. Brookway went on to finish third in the following year’s Lincoln at the same track. Herbert loved his football and was president of Southampton FC for many years. He reluctantly entered the oneeyed Striker for a selling race over a mile at Salisbury and saw him coast in by, I think, 15 lengths. Both horses were trained to perfection and retained a hint of that elusive quality ‘class’. Just enough to win a seller, anyway
When I think back to my earliest Brighton memories they include Operatic Society, of course, and great names like Hethersett and Park Top. But I’ve always had a weakness for ordinary handicappers as well Horses like Sooty Tern, who ran in 102 turf races, including ten here at Brighton, the last of them in 1998 when he was 11 years old. Old Sooty was owned and bred by Sheikh Mohammed, who released him into the welcoming arms of Milton Bradley and a longer racing life (with 19 Flat victories plus a selling hurdle at Southwell) than he could ever have imagined. He was quite famous, as well, featuring in Nigel Richardson’s book Breakfast In Brighton, which you’d love On one memorable day Sooty Tern won here in the hands of Royston Ffrench and according to Richardson, whose little group had backed him, ‘Royston’s colours were bright as a maharajah’s in the afternoon gloom’. The bookie feeling the lash was Sam Trumpton of Eastleigh‘the one with the whisky bottle in his pocket’.
From the days before college the horses I remember include Fetiche and the sprinter All Promise - unusual because his trainer Albert Neaves trained jumpers, the most celebrated being multiple winner Certain Justice. Upon graduating I was down by the furlong pole when Boyst won an apprentices’ handicap at 8/1. In those days Raceform produced a daily racing booklet with a faded yellow cover. Inside, a minus sign by a horse’s name was good news, -1 meaning it had a pound less to carry than Raceform thought it deserved.
Those were the days I understudied a Bingo caller in Kemp Town He was an old sweat whose breath revealed a fondness for brown ale, peppermints and Woodbines but he was a genuine entertainer and the ladies loved him. I said ‘Five and nine, the Brighton line’ came about because the fare used to be five shillings and ninepence on the old London and South-Eastern Railway. He gently corrected me, pointing out that Route 59 was the train line day trippers took when leaving London for a day by the sea. I was as green as grass
I suppose political correctness would cramp his style these days ‘Two fat ladies, all the eights 88’ has almost certainly disappeared over the horizon - and rightly so Everything changes Well, nearly everything. At least today remains a day of pure escapism with winners along the way. Make sure you enjoy it.
